Hungarian Vizsla Before You Buy Please take into account that Hungarian Vizsla's are highly active dogs that need to explore run go crazy in the outdoors. They are amazing wonderful crazy dogs which make a great companion for life.
I had a Vizsla and I hiked her twice a day. She was remarkably easy to train, would carry her leash while walking next to me, and would 'stay' forever. She lived to 16, the dear thing. Still miss her. Thank you for this great video!
Completely true! We lost ours recently age 15 and even with one eye, mostly deaf and with dementia he loved his walks although much slower right to the last day of his life. A truly active and loving companion whose heart just gave out. Missed greatly but it’s so good to see one well loved and enjoying life just as ours did his whole life. Enjoy every moment with her! They are a great blessing.
Had a Vizsla for two years until we had to put her to sleep due to ever increasing seizures and she was the most amazing companion I miss her every day did walks every day no matter the weather and I'm getting another one Next month most amazing dog well more than a dog a family member and she did me a world of good for my condition love them
There are 3 breeds that require an experienced owner: German Short-haired Pointer, Weimaraner and Vizsla. The 3 breeds are cousins, extremely intelligent and vigilant hunters. Vizsla's however are special, they are sensitive and are your indoor companion as much as anything. They aren't going in the backyard like a Labrador to sleep for 6 hours. My Vizsla didn't sleep until about 3 years old, before that it was 2 plus hours everyday in the field or woods. I trained him, we bonded and I dedicated my life to him as he did to me. I sacrificed certain things to ensure he was always with someone he trusted.
Mine is now 2 1/2 years old and I have walked him 12km every day! He is always "off lead" and loves hunting. This exercise regime has meant we have had absolutely no management issues with him at all. Amazingly affectionate! Very intelligent and so easily trained. He eats what we eat - no dog food or rolls. We keep all the peelings, cook them up with some heart, liver etc, add some rice/porridge and our left overs like mashed potato etc. He gets a soup bone every morning, with plenty of meat on it - nice pearly teeth! Very attached to my wife but I'm top dog, if I growl at him he can pee himself. Great dog.
I love dogs, I walk 8 - 9 km everyday, there are very few bad dogs, just a lot of very ignorant owners, you teach them everything in the first 3 - 6 months, the more you put in the more you get out. Socialising them early makes your life so much easier…. Eventually they read your facial expressions and gestures and can reliably carry out commands without any verbal instruction, then you know you are at one with your dog. You must be prepared to be part of their pack and you must be the Alpha.
I totally agree with you so true what you have said. Bond with them love them and teach them your ways and all is well in the end. Yes the know facial expressions especially after they have been a little naughty 😂. Enjoy take care
Had seven of them and worked them all on shoots. They are VERY different and obedience is the first thing to teach from the day they arrive....but gently....they do need a lor of activity and if you cannot give them that then choose another breed. Now, having said that they are the most fantastic dog and to be honest they need work. This guy says it as it is and with him 100%.
I own a 9 month old Vizsla and you are totally correct. They need to be outside at minimum 1-2 hours a day. We walk her over to a nature trail close by every afternoon where she can run freely, jump in the stream, etc. it’s the Highlight of her day
Happy days that’s great to hear, yes Vizsla enjoy the forest trails tremendously. My one has ants in her pants each and every morning before she goes out, just waiting till I put my boots on and grab the lead then she’s starts singing nonstop. But just to see her running around in the open fields and forest is such a great joy. Take care all the best enjoy
we have a viszla for 4 month now and i can confirm that he is so calm and friendly and lovesome when u walked him but when he havent walked him bc u were ill or something he is tenting to bite everything and go crazy. Its so important to go out. We bought him because we spent our hole live outside walking, hiking, mountainbiking, so we knew we love nature. Thanks for ur vid people have to see it.
So very true what you have written, yes one time my son was sick so I couldn’t walk her for three days and she could only play in the garden. She started to dig up plants and just being silly 😂. She gets walked everyday in the forest chasing squirrels wild birds and the odd fox and buck but they always outsmart her. Enjoy take care
Thank you so much for these words. So so true. I grew up with dogs ( german pointer) and then my first own dog was a Viszla. Love of my life, but lots of work in the beginning. They also need brain work like track searching, eg. I now have a 5 month old viszla Weimaraner mix. Same Story. Great loveable dog but needs to be there where it should be. In the fields and woods with somebody taking care and time. Regards from Austria 🤗🦮
As a Vizsla owner for 25 years I must agree with everything Shaun says. This is the best introduction to Vizsla We have ever seen and nails it. Your film of you and your beautiful friend brought back wonderful memories for us, sadly lost our beautiful Ginny two years ago at the age of fourteen and our previous Vizsla Honey was sixteen when we lost her. We desperately wish for another Vizsla but sadly worry that we may be too old at mid seventies, the trouble is that all other breeds may be super but a vizsla is, well a Vizsla. We hope that any prospective Vizsla owner views your video before committing.. We have also owned Dalmations for many years, they are very similar but not as deep thinking or as sensitive as Vizsla. For many years we had a dalmation and vizsla together, they were a great team. We smiled at your reference to a bucket of warm water when you got home, we had two buckets, two towels and a sponge with diluted white vinegar for the fox poo rolling. It kills the smell!
I owned a Vizsla for nearly 11 years. Lost her 3 months ago to a tumor. I can confirm what you say. Our Elsa had 10km fast walk in the forest in the morning and 5km walk or bicycle ride in the afternoon every day. In between a lot of playing in the garden. So, if you can ´t spend the time for these activities don ´t get a Vizsla! This dog needs action outdoors and running full speed over a field with the nose 10cm above ground. And: they will find every bird in the high grass. Being held as a „fashion“ item dog in a city appartment with short walks on the pavement and left alone for hours is pure torture for this wonderful dog. Respect their heritage.
Absolutely brilliantly written so true what you have mentioned “fashion item” city dog left inside then shouted at for chewing up furniture. My condolences sorry for your loss take care
I was torn between a vizsla and a rhodesian ridgeback. I chose the ridgeback in the end due to the vizsla's tendency to have separation anxiety, but the exercise requirements are roughly the same: 5 - 10kms every day without fail. Normally she gets 2 walks, but it can be one long one.
Thank you for this fantastic video. It is incredibly informative, and as a nature lover, bush walker and hiker, I feel as though a Vizsla will be great companion for me. Highly energetic, yet very affectionate and loyal. Your information is invaluable and should be shared far and wide. Thank you so much Shaun. Cheers from Australia.
Thank you for this video! I LOVE dogs. For years, I’ve noticed that far too many humans need a better understanding of dogs and/or animal culture and behavior. Too many people seem to think dogs do not need to be trained to live in human culture…as if it’s instinctive to them. Sorry but living in alleys or back yards is not their initial vibe. If you want peace while having a dog be sure to provide them with proper training. Dogs have hearts of gold, they just want to get some kisses to confirm they’ve pleased you in some way. The most profoundly lessen they teach humans what’s important, starting with unconditional/authentic love. (Nothing like seeing that in real time)🐾❤ ps, I don’t have dogs now but I’ve had 3 vizslas. My last one lived 14 years and passed in 2015. They’re active but the smartest sweetest breed ever. Great dog for families.
Most important, one has to be at home. U can’t go to work and leave a Vizsla alone. I have vizslas my whole life, but I always had my own company where I could take the dog with me. Most people just can’t have one, I wish they would just accept that. It’s a 24/7 dog, and they don’t slow down when they they 6 or 8
I completely agree and I enjoyed watching your dog running around. I have a Viszla Weimaraner mix and I exercised a lot with her. She loved to do mantrailing - it focuses not only on running but also on the nose and brain. They love lots of variety. But also cuddling and be near their reference person. They can be VERY attached to them. My dog has actually three or four people she is comfortable with because she got used to it really right from the start.
Mantrailing yes I’ve looked into that seems awesome definitely give it a try in the future. Yes Starfire never leaves my side she always has to get involved with everything I do around the house diy garden ect she’s like an apprentice clueless but ready to lend a hand 😂. Awesome breed happy days take care thanks for the comment 👍
Just saw my comment to your video two months ago. She passed away five weeks ago. We are still very sad. But in the other hand thankful for the long time we had together. She was the perfect dog for us. And we are already thinking about getting a new dog in spring. It will be a Vizsla or a mix.
@@ronflying1374 so sorry for your loss my friend yes I’m also dreading the day I have to cross that bridge. But it’s the quality of life that matters in the end so as long as dog and owner have spent time together making memories then that’s what matters. But loosing a loved one is just painful so once again my condolences.
I love my Vizsla, she is beautiful and smart. Would I get one again? No, there were valid reasons, but in hindsight it is pretty much 2 hours a day exercise and interaction for the first 3 years at least. They are very funny and beautiful though and probably good for mending a broken heart.
When you keep meeting all the honey's, make sure you hook him up too! It is the buddy system and you both will be in the best shape of your lives! Trust me on the other side of the pond. May 3rd 2022 was one super rough day and we were so glad to have let him play the harmonica and build an Indy car track in back yard and in the park! Fastest Dog ever and is running free with the antelope! 🐅☮🕊🏁
Excellent advice. Everything you said applies to Dalmatians as they too are energetic dogs, require space, nature and the ability to venture into, explore, and stimulate their desire for adventure and learning. Truly a commitment and a labor of love.
your dog is a beautiful one, the perfect representation of the breed. the two hair spins on the bottom, and the darker fur line on the back are some of the signs. my vizsla was even sniffing underwater. greetings from Hungary 🇭🇺
Excellent point Shaun. Many folks are unaware of the energy demands that this breed requires. It's not option it's absolutely required, otherwise, just as you explained they get incredibly destructive. Great video!! Keep up the videos and I'd love to connect and collaborate on content sometime. Let's bring awareness to this breed shall we? :)
Yes so true that people sometimes choose a specific breed for the looks which is fine in most cases but with hunting breeds it’s always an requirement or in their best interest to have them outside for longer periods because it’s in them it’s their nature to hunt. On the other hand Vizsla don’t have to hunt but you should still stimulate their brain by finding objects and so forth. Take care
All true ) My vizsla pup is 10 month old now. I walk with him in the forest and mountains 1,5-2 hours in the morning and 40-50 minutes in the evening. And he also wants to play above that: throw ball and toggle rope, etc. An he is very active, good for hiking ) thinking to start running with him. Also a very good companion, follows me everywhere I go )) It’s a good thing I work from home. Also he is very vocal )) seems like talking when he is hurrying me up to go out for a walk or begging for a snack )
A great explanation of the breed. Main (wire-haired) get a minimum of 4 miles off leash a day. What ai just learned about their were breed to follow hunters which were on horse, so they kept up with the hunt. That explains a lot.
I have owned 2 Vs and showed the second to his bench championship. I always expected to have another, but at 76 opted for a field-bred lab. I do walk or jog at least 4 mi every morning and live on 6A in the mountains, but my love for and knowledge of the breed told me I could not guarantee my ability to provide for a Vs needs for his lifetime. A well-trained lab would be much easier for me to manage as we age together and to rehome, should I become unable to maintain him. But I looove watching any videos about Vizslas! ❤️🐶❤️
I have had three Vizslas. The one I have now is almost two. I have to take her out for walks on and off leash daily. She is amazing off leash. She listens really well. But if I don’t take her out, she is crazy in the house. I love these dogs to pieces. They keep me active. If you are not highly active and not committed to being active with your Vizsla, I would echo this guy’s advice to not get one.
Three wow you must be fit and healthy! Sounds awesome they must be loads of fun playing together on walks I could just imagine. I walk mine early every weekday but on Sundays I try sleep in and come downstairs for a coffee then Starfire will always be nagging to go out for a walk bumping my legs constantly being annoying 😂Yes dogs are just so special in their ways and always super friendly happy to see their owners just always. Enjoy
Well one died in Sept 2020 from Lymphoma at 10.5 years old. My 13 year old V passed January of this year. So now I have an almost 2 year old V and a 2 year old Weimaraner (she is my 1st Weim). They keep me busy! Yes, Vizslas are special dogs! 😁
I have had 3 GSP. One lived to 15 years. One 6 years. She has a tumer on her lung. The one I have now is 12. I have always wanted a Vizsla. They are all good. If you train them well.
Bond with them and all is well with training happy days. German pointer yes I actually saw one they are beautiful dogs lovely speckled coat on them. I would consider one if the wife said yes 😂. I love the hunting breeds I was looking at getting a Beagle but some say they can be a handful they also love barking and should really be used on farms for hunting, hardly any recall if they spot a squirrel in the park they off then again most hunting breeds😂. I guess with the right training it should be fine but it’s just what I heard from a few people. My Vizsla spots foxes deer squirrels chases them without barking, we can actually spend a 2 hour walk in the forest without her barking once. Take care
Very good piece of advice. Happy vizsla is a tired vizsla, but with their energy levels it will require some serious effort. Basically what they say is that it's an ultimate adventure dog. If you go hiking/camping/trail running/kayaking - it can be a dog for you. But always consider time you'll have to invest in your dog. Speaking from my experience - 3y.o. V. P.S. 5min/month rule is bs. My V would have made me crazy if we adhered to that
Yes I agree the 5 min rule is a bit crazy especially with a Viz. I took her out for longer but off lead in the forest at her own pace just using my own judgment. I’ll be taking her soon out with the mountain bike 👍
Viszla are great looking dogs and they seem to be fun to be around too. I agree that you should take into consideration your own lifestyle before you select a dog. If you are a coach potato an English bulldog may be the perfect dog for you. Most people are probably somewhere between sportsman and a laid back sofa dweller and then you have a lot of breeds to choose from. My dog has the same fur color as the viszla but don’t need so much exercise. I went for the Dogue de Bordeaux. It motivates to go for a walk twice a day but I don’t have to run around in the forest if I don’t want to.
Powerful breed a Mastiff gentle but powerful. My Uncle had a Bullmastiff in South Africa as a guard dog on the farm and they never had any break ins 😂. Enjoy take care
@@shaunsworld3625 Bullmastiff and Dogue de Bordeaux looks almost the same and I believe they have similar temperament. They are both surprisingly strong and good guard dogs. However they gentle and usually not argessive towards humans or other animals. If somebody is at the door my dog will tell me and she is very happy to meet them. Last Halloween my dog had great fun with all the kids ringing at the door bell. She managed to get out and run like crazy between three groups of kids. Only when three girls held her did I manage to catch up with her.😄😂🤠
Just feel insecure to have them running off-leash in the woods. How can you make sure that she is not running away from chasing some squirrels? Thanks for the tips.
At first I took Starfire out to a local park that had a big field and I walked her with a long lead 5 meters which gave her freedom to do her own things but I had the control and just worked with getting her used to my recall voice with some treats. I did that a few times and took her into the forest off lead and the rest is history. As long as there’s is no traffic nearby or farmers live stock cow goats sheep then you should not be worried. Starfire chases squirrels but not for long because squirrels are fast and head up a tree then she just leaves them and returns to walking. Vizslas are very close to their owners like Velcro so they don’t tend to wonder off. Open field or forest no cars around no roads nearby no cyclists and you should be good to go because that was my main concern for her safety. In the beginning it can be scary off lead but the earlier you start the quicker they learn and as puppies they will also chew any litter left around tissues bottles cans and you’ll have to work it out with them but eventually they know right from wrong and the walks are just amazing. Take care
just be active and that's it. no need to be a hunter, explorer, hiker or whatever. Dogs require commitment and be active to keep your dog healthy. All the BS about lifestyle is not necessary.
Im looking into the breed, I own a paddle board business, and this breed says it is a water dog, do you believe that? also Im also researching raw diet for my current pup, you have a link you recommend to find safe and healthy recipes for raw diet?
Excellent video, thank you Shaun. Our family has been considering getting a Vizsla, my wife and I are both avid trail runners, mountain bikers and we are always outside as much as we can, we also live on 5 acres. I want a dog we can take out on our hikes and even run and bike with when they are older. Im curious how do they do with fences and large yards? We have cattle fencing so a dog could easily get out, with the right training would a Vizsla be able to be off leash and know the boundary of our property?
With the right training anything is possible with a dog. Outside supervision is always a must when a dog is not in a secured garden would be my advice. Farmers have dogs on farms but I guess cattle and other live stock are separate or a distance from the farm house. My Starfire walks always off the lead in the forest but I will never walk her along side the road off lead. Our back door is always open and she does as she pleases but if we are out she’s has the whole house to herself because of dog theft here on the U.K. but in South Africa most dogs stay outside as guard dogs. Vizsla are very attached to their owners so they most likely don’t run off they stick around always in eye contact which is cute yet annoying slightly when work needs to be done hahaha.
I’d say that generally vizslas are homebodies (ours can run around on the front lawn and we don’t worry about her going further than the hedge), but they are sensitive to noise and things that frighten them. Our first once tried to run away from home when the leaf blower was going. She didn’t get far, but they do have a bolting tendency and since they are fast they could travel far. Any time I see a lost/missing Vizsla posting on Instagram, it’s usually because they escaped an unsecured yard after some sort of noise/event. If you live in. Cold climate, exposure becomes and issue quickly. I know of at least one that went missing in a ski town and was never found. We have a secured yard for ours, though at least part of that is because we have a significant coyote population in the wild area behind the yard. Ours loves her big yard. They thankfully are not escape artists like beagles where you have to go to extremes in fence design. They are amazing dogs.
Find me an Hungarian Vizsla puppy that’s 10 weeks old and I will gladly adopt one. I chose Hungarian Vizsla for the breed characteristics and personality because that fits in with my personal lifestyle. Together we both benefit from one another work together as one which is an unbreakable bond. I did not want any other dog breed I chose not for the looks but the nature of the dog. I did look at the Hungarian Vizsla adoption website but the chances were slim as hear in the U.K. they are highly in demand. Maybe one day in the future I would adopt a dog to give it a better life but I don’t have to. People have a choice and just because others have been cruel towards other dogs doesn’t mean new owners should be forced to pick up the pieces. Your comment comes across in a forceful manner but I understand that in your life things are different so will your opinions and that’s fine and your are obviously less selfish than most others including myself by taking in rescues irrelevant to the breed or their nature which is beautiful. Understanding is everything so my choices are my own not others.
