WORM FARMING COURSE & MEMBERS AREA / @martysgarden
I have moved into part 3 of the Hungry Bin Experiment and found something very interesting.
Before I started the experiment I harvested over 50% of the processed material that was composted in there.
I used it in my potting mix blends and I tell you what my plants love it.
Watch the vlog and let me know your thoughts on how I am now using this worm farm.
I believe I have now found dual uses for it and solved a problem, cool, yes?
If you want to learn more about worm farming and using worms to grow amazing healthy green lush plants that are chemical and pest free please consider joining the member's area and becoming a Worm Wrangler.
There is a course in there for level 3 members called Starting A Worm Farm a Beginners Guide that used to be on another website for twice the price. Now it's less than a pizza!

I was grossed out with the first few Hungry Bin harvests, but I’m liking it much better now. I agree that you can definitely use it to compost food waste and hold compost, as well as house the worms. I started putting food on only half the bin at a time, more frequent feedings but not over feeding (to avoid overheating) and placing a plastic bag-covered-cardboard directly over the compost. Now I have more activity on the top layer than before and less bugs and castings everywhere. I put food under a layer of leaves and that helps the bacteria get working on the food. When I was putting it on the top layer the food would get smelly, attract pests and then dry out-which doesn’t lend itself to the beneficial bacteria to work on it, as well as the worms won’t really work on dried out food. I’ve been using Neem cake in the worm bin and think there is less mites now. I love using the dried leaves in my area and the worms love it but I hate finding tiny slugs on the lid. I keep a little dish of DE or powdered worm food and drop them in it when I find them. I’ve been adding a Humichar, Azomite, & crab meal & mycorrhiza, as well as the Neem cake to supercharge my castings! Even some blackstrap molasses occasionally and I have happy worms. Another use for the hungry bin is a holding tank for extra worms! I will start a new worm bin in a bus bin and take a bunch of the worms from the hungry bin for the first month or two, then I will gather up at least half from the bus bin to return them to the hungry bin. The high population gets the bin off to a great start & they drop a bunch of cocoons, so i can grow my population. Then when I’m getting ready to harvest bins, I will start plucking out worms and put them in the hungry bin until I need them again. Because the hungry bin has such a large capacity, it’s been great to add or take worms from at my whim.

Thanks Marlene, for sharing your experience with the Hungry Bin. I used it at the start to house more worms to help build up populations for my windrows. I think if your into worm farming it's definitely worth having! 😀

I often used my worm castings as needed, then add more bedding. So far it works. I have d old black worm farm with 3 layers ( 2 qt present working). Soon be time to find a cooler spot though, so will start a new layer, n as the warmth comes im sure I'll have more babies

Hello Marty from NZ! My partner and I have two worm farms, we would love to use the casings and like you some of the compost, what about all the worms still in the castings an compost? can they go in the garden? Kind regards Lois & Steve
@martysgarden
@martysgarden 3 года назад
Great question. If you have plenty of mulch and compost the worms are fine in the garden. Take a look at my underground permaculture worm farm video...these works great in the garden. Your spare worms will live in one under a tree or in a cool spot..😀 and fertilise your patch.
@marlenen6130
@marlenen6130 3 года назад
You can put the castings and compost in a bin to dry a little, pull out any large pieces, then put a piece of watermelon, rind up, on the top, lightly covering the edges. Wait 4-6 days and you’ll find a bunch of worms n the watermelon and beneath it, so you can gather up many worms before putting them in the garden. You can do that multiple times also. You will still have lots of cocoons in the compost to populate the garden, but you don’t have to lose all your farming worms.
@prubroughton2327

I have one and I agree that it is very difficult to harvest the castings at 72 hard to get low enough and so I use a small hand rake to claw it down. I have too many worms to take from the top

Ah man dude I saw this huge worm when I was raking leaves. It was BLOODY HUGE!! It was hiding in a composting layer of leaves. I was thinking about adding it to my worm farm but I was thinking "This huge monster will eat all of the food before the others get the chance and I am not gonna depend on one worm for composting my food scraps."
@martysgarden
@martysgarden 3 года назад
Awesome, it was probably big earthworm and wouldn't do well in a farm..they burrow deep. Good sign though having that big one in your garden😀
