Nice. I just picked up the same "Mother Thumper" 6 year bottle while visiting Phoenix this weekend. My first Willett purple top after many years of searching.
The bourbon gods love you. Keep getting these great bottles. I have never seen a Willett purple label here. do a blind with stagg jr, williett and van winkle... even if you think you would be able to pick the van winkle... having 3 blinds would help. thanks for sharing. cheers.
Not lately! I have heard of so many Purple tops hitting in the last month. But I know this is anecdotal. Stagg's most recent batch has just not dropped yet. Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
I have a purple top willett and I got it from a liquor store in Arizona on my way back from the Grand Canyon. Was it expensive? Yes ($175) but that’s significantly cheaper than what they go for everywhere else I’ve seen them (for a 6 year purple top). Mine was super hot off the neck pour. It’s mellowed out since then but there’s a ton of spice and also a noticeable youthful grain note on it.
@JC Marasigan I think they are bottles I would never pass up at retail, or maybe 15-20% more, so $175 would be just fine. Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
@@yourdrinkingbuddy honestly don’t even know what retail was on a 6 year purple top but couldn’t pass up on it cause that price seemed like I wasn’t gonna find it for cheaper and because the hunt always leads me to the next bottle with so much potential. Cheers!
Sometimes I don't know what to do with myself when the background music is not a ripping guitar lick... Very pleased to see you have not lost the intro music and the legendary, "Ahhhhh". Thank you fine sir. Oh yeah...still love the content
I definitely use the rocking stylings of Steven Butt more than not, but I throw in some variety here and there. The drinking jingle? That is going no where. I will always use that amazing song. Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
Purple tops are such a cool different high end bourbon, I can see why there is a cult following. The older willet you try the more you want to keep trying older higher proof ones.
I am right there with you now. I will be hunting these now for sure. Crazy the next time I tasted it blind, i got completely different tasting notes and even thought it was a rye! Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
Between 2 of my local stores you can get anything you are looking for.... But you have to pay. One got every BTAC... At a grand a piece. We as a community need to stop paying the mark ups. Only way to stop them from price gouging
I'm hesitant to seek out the purple top because I'm just not crazy on the Pot Still Reserve bottle that I've tried to allow now for several months to open up. I know the proof points are vastly different, cask strength verses 94 proof, but does the purple top taste different? What say you drinking buddy? What should I do?
I would have to compare the two to see if it is a similar flavor profile. I like the Willet Pot still since it became their juice, which was very recently. You might check and see if you have one of the older sourced ones. I will say when it comes to Purple Tops, the price is HIGH. So I don't blame you, not wanting to take a flyer on them... Cheers buddy I hope that helped? Thanks for everything buddy! 🥃
It does. It teaches me to be more careful when opening a bottle around the neck. I think I clipped the bottle # info around the neck. Oh, well, it probably is an older bottle or a bad bottle. Thanks DB!@@yourdrinkingbuddy
Only price I have ever paid! That is retail buddy. But I will admit they seem to have all but dried up. Haven't seen one in over 6 months. So paying more than $50 might be in my future.... Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
Let's be clear though. These bottles vary GREATLY! some are really good and some are drain pours... Get to know the barrel numbers and recipes and don't overpay just because it's a purple top.
I can honestly say that this one is fantastic. I have not treid many though. I will also say, I can't find my barrel number on ANY of their charts. I would love to know the mash bill. But can't find it to save my life. Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
@@yourdrinkingbuddy I am a fan of Lowland Scotch and I’ve heard it said that it’s similar. Armorik is a Breton single malt that I really like. Brittany and Normandy have such interesting drinks and food, Bretons are the descendants of Celts from England who fled from the Anglo Saxons to France, and Normandy was founded by Vikings who the French king gave land to, in exchange for stopping being Vikings (Norman ~ Norsemen), so there are interesting mixes, Breton whisky and Norman cider/Calvados apple brandy.
Watch my video I premiere tomorrow! You might be surprised by the results. I tried a 20 year sourced Willett that was easily BTAC good. This 6 year is great but not in the realm of that 20. Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
@@yourdrinkingbuddy comparing them to the 6 year, I get where you’re coming from. I have an 18yr, and I’ll take that over BTAC all day. They’re not bad - just my palette prefers the Willett WFE bottles. I’m trying to get a wheated WFE purple top to compare to the WLW. I think that would be a better comparison.
I don’t know if it’s just me, but any of the purple tops that are willett distillate as opposed to the super high aged sourced stuff just tasted like cask strength pot still 😅
I disagree, but understand the sentiment, especially when you consider how expensive Willett has made everything. They are borderline not worth buying at all due to price. Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
@@yourdrinkingbuddy my friend used to be able to walk into stores in Kentucky and buy as many wax topped willets as she wanted at MSRP, how things have changed… lol
