What's with the Hunter S. Thompson bashing. A strong spirit cannot be tamed by age, and is constantly seeking and striving. Drug use is a vehicle for exploration of the self and the world. Regardless of age and decrepitude, you can't snuff the passion in someone like Mr. Thompson. RESPECT!
HST had flickerings of genius which he drowned in substance abuse. He destroyed his brain and writing in the mid-70's, and over the last 20 years of his life became a commentator feeding off of CNN than a journalist out in the field seeking facts; if he ever was a journalist. He degenerated into a hired gun and propagandist for DNC interests, and blew his brains out when his junky lifestyle had him wearing a diaper. The man was nothing more than a drug problem with a typewriter. I find his work very entertaining, but extremely irresponsible. Lord knows how many idiot kids destroyed their lives because of some misplaced respect for that gibbering cartoon character.
It killed his writing career. He simply couldn’t write for decades due to his abuse. Addiction freezes your development. He had been getting high every day since his twenties. A twenty something g trapped in a middle age body.
Thanks! I agree! The main point is how HST replies to his questions - and the questions provoke some pretty good answers which is the main point of asking questions anyways. I draw back my reference to a jerk.
HST didn't shy away from anyone who disagreed with him - in fact he THRIVED on debate. He felt that a profoundly inherent American characteristic is diversity. The man drank whiskey with Pat Buchanan for chrissakes and he did it on purpose. If you look at his roster of friends they are the most diverse set of folks you could ever imagine. He was not on Charlie Rose by accident, guys.
If America is fucked, it will land squarely at the feet of Barry Obama, the American hating Marxist POS, and his ball-licking Socialist whores aka,......the Democrat Party. They, like this fool Hunter Thompson, live in a make-believe fairyland world where America is to blame for every-fucking thing going on, no matter where or what the circumstances. If this dipshit Hunter Thompson where alive today, he'd surely think ISIS was nothing more than a misunderstood and fun loving bunch of guys...........Hunter Thompson was a paranoid A-hole...........Good riddence.
Despite the fact you can tell hes fucked up as shit here (in gonzo fashion), this guy is essentially brilliant.rip Hunter S. Thompson. the world needs people like you to establish the alternative contesters to a conservative regime
Q why do people ask a question...interrupt the answer and then try to change the mind of the answerer? because they dont want to know the answer, they want to change the mind of the answerer
I too am appalled by what Charlie Rose said, but then again he only exists in some alternate world of nothingness or the edge of the universe with only a table and a camera owned by public broadcasting
Yup. A terrifying slate of a suit trying with a desperately cold eagerness to kick a lion into paths he dosent need to defend; more lives lived in the shadow of Hunter`s lenses than this man will ever know,. (I know this response is a year late but I just stumbled on this clip).
It might not have been "about" freedom and change, but that was a stated goal and a result. I didn't think so before but my girlfriend is an Iraqi Shia who was able to come to the USA only because of the war. I'd be a fool not to listen to her opinion.
It doesn't matter if Thompson opposed the war - hundreds of millions of people around the globe opposed the war - it went ahead anyway...and 10's of millions died as a result. I liked most of Thompson's work, but his political views were the same as everyone else's, at that time, unimportant.
I guess the time has shown that Hunter was right about the war on Iraq. Or well... Maybe it was about power, also. But what he says about fear... It was about that, pretty much. Otherwise, Rose is doing a good job.
because comments arent just arguments that someone can win rather they are comments. you are right, however, people who put the thoughts in book form are most times referred to as "writers", this may be a foreign concept to you but you will have to trust me on it. most of the times "thinkers" are referred to people who are philosophers, ethicists or someone who bestows some sort of wisdom. does writing require thoughts and thinking, of course, but youre looking at it literally.
@IndicaDreaming I agree totally, and Democracies don't attack each other, responsible use of resources for the good of humankind - not to blackmail humankind is probably a little better
Sometimes, at certain angles, Hunter S. Thompson looks like an old Chinese man. Y'all know what the fuck I'm talking about, don't anybody act like they don't.
@theflorgeormix Creating a false reason for removing Saddam and pulling troops away from a warzone where an enemy that actually attacked America was operating sends the wrong message about America. Going into a war in which you are going to strip a country of its government without any real plan for creating a new government or providing any sort of stability for the folks we were "liberating" (which was exactly the case in 2003) doesn't send the right message, either.
I disagreed with it from the beginning primarily because the government wouldn't provide us any tangible evidence. Was disliked for voicing that opinion, as well.
This just drives me nuts. I'm drunk on Jack and I took sleeping pills at least an hour... maybe two hours ago, and Hunter still makes more god damn sense to me than this tight assed corporate suite. Everytime this Charlie character leans forward to make some startling point you can see he's already congratulating himself for being cleaver. It's just so obvious. I love you Hunter. Thank you. Question authority! I apologise for any gratitous misspelling.
@gturner38 its a balance, the world after WWII has had a bunch of totalitarian societies crop up, starting with Stalin's Russia, Saddam was a Psycho Capable of anything...the World is currently a better place
Oh hell, Charlie is like everyone else in the establishment. He is uptight and thinking of his own career, trying to make Hunter behave. He is no more sucessful than anyone else at this hopeless endeavor.
Furthermore, Rose was right when he said that oil is only a part of the deal. Iraq is a member of OPEC and removing an unpredictable dictator does a lot to stabilize oil prices and ensure a stable price of oil. Hunter was right to tell him that oil and power are relatively synonymous, but there was so much more than oil and power. Saddam had invaded neighboring states, committed genocide, and experimented with WMDs; all of which are grounds for loss of sovereignty. Shame we didnt finish it in 91
