@@oldboywoody3835 The events to take place were written in around 1992 or so by some think tank. Can't recall the name. But it was all laid out...into the Mid East starting with Afghanistan etc etc. So Hunter wasn't so special. It had already been written about. I think they even referred to the fact that America needed "a new Pearl Harbour" as an excuse for going into the Mid East and effecting "regime change" etc. And bingo, what do you know....911 fell right into their lap. What a lucky coincidence HUH?! The EXACT plan written about in the early 90's materialized perfectly when 911 occurred. Spooky!
I think it’s a lack of responsibility to separate it to the American military. I think America was responsible, and wanted it. I am an American, and was there watching all the rhetoric. I have a hard time seeing it as some separate entity that made these decisions.
@Z Malek I know what you're talking about. The persons doing this, from other famous guys (a lot of actors) to people on the net are as a rule doing it because of his wild living, the legendary amounts of drugs/booze consumed and some really outrageous things he's done. But, for a long, long time NOT because of his journalism and books. They've missed the point.
That interviewer is asking some of the best questions in the best ways I've ever seen... He doesn't drill for answers, he let's him open up but still leads the conversation.
@@ryanvernon871 I always loved Charlie’s interviews, like millions of people. Sadly his ego led him to abuse women & his success allowed others to turn a blind eye to his abusive ways for the sake of this show, until they couldn’t anymore. I still, however miss this “space”.
This, and an interview with Hunter by Harrison Salisbury called “Hunter S. Thompson Interview on Gonzo Journalism (April 16, 1975” are the two most lucid discussions by Hunter that I’ve come across in my decades of watching and listening to entertaining portrayals of Hunter and various talks, interviews, and observations made by Hunter of politics, etc. I’ve always found him (when intelligible) to be one of the most knowledgeable minds on the theater of politics, on the craft of writing, and the art of living. Thank you Dr. Thompson for being a person, and oft times a character, the world has needed to help point out the foibles of life, universe, and everything.
When he takes a drink out of the coffee cup he occasionally chews on some ice, it's filled with Chivas. If it wasn't he wouldn't be doing this interview.
Great great interview! Love seeing a friendly interaction between them, you can see the admiration Charlie have for Thompson. Wish I could see more of this kind of Hunter. Think of all the stories and ideas he would have told. Imagine Joe Rogan episode with this man!
i think because he's always seen himself as a novelist and a member of the American literary tradition, which he of course is undeniably now but perhaps this was one of those moments where he truly realized it and was satisfied with his work.
everyone of charlie's videos have comments telling him to shut up, but he's a great host. he treats his guests with respect, and as equals. that's why his conversations have a natural flow and terrific content.

Yeah. Will Ferrell and his writing partner wrote a very similar interview between Jackie Moon and his friend who was interviewing him in the movie Semipro, and I wonder it they had this interview in mind.

Mr. Thompson seems like a smart guy who knows how to get around the media. I miss Charlie Rose one of the only brilliant shows on TV, now we have nothing.

I love Hunter Thompson, when I was younger I did not appreciate but when I got older I easily participate but now I can only imitate or possibly simulate
He seemed like a tortured soul so brilliant in one way but lost as one of the members of the generation of literary thinkers. It's great that Johnny Depp made this into a movie which I thought was a pretty good representation of the book and showed the depravity of the characters in general. Hunter was more than just an icon of the drug generation but a amazing political voice that is lost today in a world where ignorance is king. Gone but not forgotten on of the icons of the lost art of the pen to paper of creating art in the literary fashion. We all remember the madness yet sweet and true heart of HST let him rest in peace and his written voice not fade away into dust.
Joshua Banks I was actually really disappointed in the movie, they cut out so many critical parts in the book along with some main characters, and putting Chenault with Sanders in the movie made me soooo upset. She was with Yeamon! I don’t know how they can just change something like that around like it’s nothing.
They’re uncommon, but not some mystical being that comes once a millennia. They just usually don’t find a place like Thompson did, they just struggle through life trying to find some place that is tolerable, and tolerating.
Every movie since rum diary I have been like "her acting was so good what happened?". Now I know she wasn't acting, she was just being herself on camera.
The book was great. They should have cast an actor in his early 20s for the role of Paul in the film. The story is so very much that of a young man, not a man pushing 40.

I had no idea what he's really like but I love that he doesn't have a gruff facade or tries to be brooding and hard to read. Just like his writing he seems genuine and to the point
Looking back, I believe HST had become so disillusioned with his own existence sadly, and likely realized after The Rum Diaries was finally released(being the first novel he had ever actually produced). After he was finally convinced to release it, he genuinely felt like this was his last(or first) great work and that he maybe felt like he didn't have anything worthwhile left to offer. As a fan, I only hope that they come across some other unreleased previously unknown work that can be appreciated by current literary fans and future fans of this man's work!
If you read his son's book "Stories I Tell Myself" it seems like he was in a lot of physical pain from decades of coke fueled drinking smashing his body up finally catching up with him
You ever read, Bukowski? Ham on Rye, is one of my all-time FAVORITES and you would probably enjoy it if you like that melancholy style of Hunter S.. Charles Bukowski is one of the best American authors EVER, in my (biased) opinion lol

American expat teaching in Taiwan off and on for 25 years...I could to relate to the motley crew of professionals, losers , martial arts enthusiasts, wanderers, men on the prowl, missionaries, Asian Studies graduates...the "Rum Diary" is a great story for those of us from the continental USA who can "never go home."
Comes home from Nam with his head fried by the horrors of war then pratfalls his way through several books and films seemingly drunk on every talk show.. well played sir!
@@aaronneely6040 Hunter did go to Vietnam for Rolling Stone but Werner canceled his insurance after he was in Saigon, things went sideways and he ended up in Cambodia while trying to get back to the US alive.
HUNTER THOMPSON was such an American writer. ALL of his books are Excellent. Johnny Depp did an Awsome job captureing Thompsons likes and manorisms. in Fear n loathig in las Vegas. I REALLY wonder what he would say about the state of EVERYTHING going on in our country the last 10,15 yrs? And with ALL the censorship now? Bet it wouldn't be very nice. I REALLY Miss the guy. The end of the interview was very interesting for me. When Hunter says,"Hey man it's always a pleasure" the way he said that hit me hard. Wow that was said with love. The tone in his voice and the body language so very genuine. I don't think I ever had a video manifest emotional experience this strong before. I feel like I took a mild drug or had religious experience of some sort. This man seemed so good in that moment. I wanted to be friends with him instantly. Then Hunter puts himself out there and asks Charlie to hangout with him after the show and Charlie gives no love back man. None! WTF CHARLIE! So Hunter asks Charlie to hangout at a club where Hunters' friend Doug will be doing a reading and Charlie says Oh that's tonight? Then silence for a second, Charlie you stupid F! So he doesn't give Hunter an answer immediately. Hunter continues on after that second or two of silence and kind of gives a depressed laugh and then starts to stumble over his words then Charlie cuts him off abruptly and Hunters' body language and tone in his voice seems so sad to me. Like this man really wants to hangout with a friend he sincerely appreciates. He seemed so sad and embarrassed to me at the end and o god his face soo sad :(
Hunter is a human being not following the perverted rules these interview hosts have. He is himself, a man interested in other humans. For these show hosts it's a show - not more.
Nitro Express I've read Thompson and studied the circles he ran in. Anyone who thinks his dark twisted wit didn't come from a dark twisted source is exactly the sort of rube that Hunter wouldn't have had much more than contempt for. He was an undeniable odd bird, but far stranger even than was readily apparent.
i never followed him very closely. i've seen him do a few interviews (generally later in life). might have caught a documentary or some such. he seemed like a strange druggie/drunk that could be interesting at times. but to me, he wasn't of much interest. RIP Hunter, the world needs a few strange ones.

It's 1998... Hunter: "I think boxing and wrestling are gonna merge some time soon...I think they're gonna come together into some kinda big weird wrestling league" ... it's 2019 and the UFC is biggest combat sport league on the planet. A great writer has a keen eye for the culture and its path.
Now thinking about it as dark and sad as it is I couldn’t have imagined him going out any other way than that. Not because of what led him to do it so much but like you said he was gonna go when he decided it was time to go, not when life decided it for him

He clearly inhales in this video. Not the whole drag but he does inhale. If he was, like I am now, after the first 10-15 cigs of the day your throat can get a little sore and it helps to inhale slower or less of the smoke at once. You inhale slower to reduce the heat, at least I do. That might be part of the reason he used the plastic or glass extender thing(don't know the name) but I bet he mostly used it to keep the cig farther from his face when he was typing to reduce the chance of getting smoke in his eye(s).
Maybe it’s just me but I’m pretty sure ol duke just foreshadowed his premeditated suicide over 6 years prior to it happening with his “I don’t expect to be here...” line
@@healthymealthy775 I think it comes down to this - he did want he wanted, he wrote what he wanted, he got paid to do it and a almost never had to punch a clock. Of course, a lot of people have managed all of that, but Hunter also managed to be funny and unique. I think the combination of all of that is what led to his very large fanbase.
Despite his purported wild behavior you have to read fear and loathing on the campaign trail '72 to appreciate what a decent and moral person he was, someone with the ability to get to the heart of the matter or a man and reveal it for everyone to see. His prose is so genuine and soulful. That said, forget the Johnny Depp impersonation which is garbage. See "where the buffalo roam" where Hunter's friend Bill Murray plays him and much moreso gets to the heart of what Thompson was about.

Johnny impersonated Raoul Duke, which is an exaggeration of Hunter even in the book itself; having read the rest of his works one would expect you to get this. Oh, and it was a Gilliam movie, if you know the guy you know that he's weird, over the top and makes strange fucking exaggerated movies. That's why Johnny Depp was great in Fear and loathing in Las Vegas
Raoul was simply a catalyst for Thompson to write with no hold backs. One in the same, seperate but whole. The duality of a man, for us to read and see.

No, that would have been Hunter's typical motis operandi. After he died, his wife returned some elk horns that he stole from Hemingway's museum in Idaho (he had meant to return them before he died, but never had the chance). He wasn't a real thief, but part of his antics would include stuff like this.
What an honest interview. There are so many layers here to tell you that. The cup from which he drinks being the starting point. The crush of ice, the conservative sips. That is a cup of bourbon or rum. His controlled outbursts and subtle touches of the nose suggest cocaine. But the words... man, the words. Threadbare and impatient to tell us the truth.

I loved "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," his first published novel, but I didn't care for "The Rum Diary." It really bored the shit out of me but was quaint to read while I was on vacation myself, in Cebu, Philippines, where there are also a lot of stray dogs.
His speech is something that you need to get attuned to lol, like a very unique accent... a dialect he created for himself... but once you are attuned it actually contributes to the content of the words...
I have a large Delsey suitcase, Delsey did a tv ad throwing one off a building, it was intact, mine is full of everything Hunter had in print, including Fire In The Nuts. One day someone will buy it in a charity shop, it will be locked and with no key, the buyer just might have the right eyes to see you slide the latch to open not push, hopefully on opening their mind will be blown. He sure did. Hunter said it himself multiple times on camera. He roughly stated that he didn't know who people wanted to see, Duke or Thompson. I think a lot of people think he did all the things Duke did and maybe he did but not to the extreme of Duke.
Werall Gonnadi my coworker said his friend got to party with him near the end at his ranch. He said you had to pay close attention to what he was saying because he’d hold 3 different conversations at once lol
Love the way HST is so uncomfortable with being categorized. Reminds me of Dylan in that respect. ..And Charlie doesn't seem to get it. Hunter was too busy being a great journalist to write books.
