you're entering one of the most mysterious arc in Shounen. You should NOT read comments until you're finished with the series. 😅 I fear for you. People are truly horrifying. 😨😨☠️☠️

This episode has so much emotional depth. Its an incredible opener. There are so many little things that do wonders for the characters, especially Mito and her mental journey throughout this. I love that 1999 focuses more on the "accepting your child growing up and following their own path" aspect.
1999 is know for having some of the best photography of all 90s anime. Backgrounds, colouring, cel photography - its all masterfully crafted. Sure the sound effects arent great, but thats a minor blemish on this masterpiece. Highly recommend you keep watching this version.
Kite started this story. You can check out the moments in the manga where Kite is mentioned by Gon. Chapters 38, 64 and their reunion 185, is different.
I agree. Don’t know why people want him to check just one episode of 1999 with so many non canon filler stuff which even contradict to original source when there are many scene related to him in manga and he could just read them offscreen
@@knightcommander5694since he wants to experience 1999 in an earnest watchthrough, I think getting the missing Kite bits via the chapters won’t hinder that future watch. Which more than likely will happen after he finishes 2011.
I watched the 1999 anime before the 2011 one, and I gotta say it, the OG one is a classic. It has some filler and the pacing is SOMETIMES a little bit slow, but it's a great show, directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi. Surely a worth watching 90's anime right here.
It truly feels more like someone is shooting the scenes with a camera inside HxH world rather than a 1:1 manga adaptation. It's really artistic and captivating.
So as you can see, 2011 version skipped the whole Kite stuff. However the 1999 version just made stuff up too, like Mito being the sister of Gon's mother, her taking Ging to court and Gon feeling abandoned and not just curious about Ging. I still believe it's a version worth experiencing, just not having in mind the manga or 2011 version as the same story. Similar to Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 and Brotherhood, tho with less changes to the overall story
@@robertboxwell in the manga she just says “I made him give you up,” there’s nothing about a court battle for custody or anything. It just kind of implies that Mito convinced him that the hunter lifestyle is no place for a literal baby and to leave him there. I say “convinced” because this is Ging we’re talking about. The master Nen user who can never be tracked down when he doesn’t want to be. If he didn’t *want* to leave Gon on the island, there’s really not anything Mito could’ve done to stop Ging from taking Gon against her wishes. As if he’d stick around for a whale island court proceeding lol
All these beautiful backgrounds. You can tell they took a lot of time and effort to make this as cinematic as possible, especially considering how it was made back in the day.
@@mrpeanutbutter6817I don't get why it's a requirement though, I watched the 2011 version without even knowing the 1999 version existed, I still ended up liking Kites character a bunch. I think meeting him straight after Greed Island is perfectly fine but that's just me
@@jemaselite8076 I mean, it is VERY important to have the context between the relationship Kite and Gon had, as well as Kite BEING the very first Hunter showcased in the entire story and presenting the premise both to the protagonist and the audience. I love 2011's adaptation, but its greatest crime was cutting out this section of the beginning of the story, it's like they wanted to rush to the "good parts", but then shoot themselves at the foot when this had later significance.
@@jemaselite8076 I think the biggest problem is a lot of people didn't understand why Gon was *THAT* affected by Kite's death, because in 2011's version they hadn't really known each other that long.
Wholeheartedly recommend you watch at least the York New arc from the 99 version. I think most people who've watched both would agree the tone and direction in that version beats the 2011 one, even though 2011 is still incredible. About Mito's "sister" being his mother, that was just filler added by the anime staff as most of the info about Gon's parents and all those relationships wasn't disclosed in the manga until the return to Whale Island, 2011 is the canon version in that respect.
@@Shazam1998He said that already, most people who whatch BOTH versions. And I agree with that statement. The 2011 version is amazing obviously. But 1999 has something else to offer, like the legendary ost, the darker moody tone, and some scenes that are not present in the newer version. All of those adding the axperience of this series. Even the “boring” hunter exam arc was much more interesting in the 99 version.
@@Ria1D13 The scenes that arent present in the newer version are filler that the 99 anime made up. The 2011 version has great music and follows the manga tone to a T. Also, your reply is very obviously just you hiding the fact that you just simply dislike the 2011 version. It basically reads as "2011 sure is great but here is why its actually super bad in comparison."
Another reason why you're so unique. No other creator actually went and watched 99 ep 1 before the Chimera Ant arc. And not only that but you made a video about it! Despite being a huge HxH fan myself I actually never watched the 1999 version for some reason but it's gorgeous! Also some videos ago I thought about what episode would deserve third page of frames but you expanded it to 16 here lmao
I know this video is already a month old, but, what the heck, here is "Changes in adaptations!" 1.- Mito-san: In the original story, Mito and Ging are cousins (each born from the two offsprings of grandma) In the 99 anime, it was changed so Mito had a sister that Ging married, making them just political relatives 2.- Gons mom: In the original, no one knows who Gon's mom is, nor if she's still alive. In the 99 versions, she (Mito-san sister) died shortly after giving birth to Gon. Ging, the deadbeat, was nowhere to be found 3.- Kite: The original does start with Kite and Gon meeting and everything (the fox bear, he mentioning Ging, the license he left behind) is accurate. It was all cut from the 2011 version till they meet Kite at the start of the Chimera Ant arc, where it's told through flashbacks. 4.- Ging: The part about him losing custody against Mito-san is completely accurate. I was surprise too
I first watched the 1999 version (in 2003 or 2004) and I absolutely love the darker tone. It’s kept through the whole story and you can imagine how crazy that works for YorkNew. I love how you picked up on Gons abandonment issue here. There is a certain scene after the confrontation with Hisoka (during the Hunter exam arc) that really brings that home and is done a lot better than the new series. I love the 2011 series as well but I grew up with the 1999 one and it really has a special atmosphere with the darker atmosphere
HxH 99 takes some liberties in having filler mixed into the canon material (sorta typical of adaptions of this type, similarly to FMA 03 vs Brotherhood if you get that, others have mentioned the specifics for this episode already), but 99 HxH definitely wins in the aesthetic department and the general mood/vibes of certain scenes are done way, waaaaay better in this version than the modern. (The end of the Hunter Exams, when Illumi is first properly introduced and shown talking with Killua is a notable scene in particular, as well as all of Yorknew Arc being arguably better in 99)
Oh, if you're gonna watch 1999 version, which is difference approach, after finish 2011, It would be the best thing! There are so many artistic episodes and difference vibes, I still love it until today.
The 2011 version actually has the correct family explanation (so not Mito's sister being his mother and Mito is Ging's cousin), the 1999 one isn't canon afaik.
welcome to the series kite! i would love to see your uploads to this adaptation as well, but i completely understand if there isn’t enough interest to make it to youtube. maybe patreon exclusive content?
Fun Fact: When asked, the director of the 2011 anime said that the reason for Kite's ommision was for his reveal at the begginig of the Chimera Ant arc to be more dramatic. Although it is more plausible that they didn't want to put him into the story just for it to have no payoff, since the Chimera Ant arc only finished serializiation a day after the first episode of the 2011 anime aired, and it wasn't decided wheter or not they would adapt it.
Yeaaah that was pretty stupid. Even if they didn't adapt the chimera ant arc him being in the first episode is still important for Gon's character. As proven by how much more impactful his addition in the first ep of the 1999 version is.
If I had to guess, I'd say this was omitted from 2011 because time and passing. the 2011 versioncompressed many things in other to have more time to do new things that the 99 version could not. Also, in the original manga, this introduction is rather short, you can see the 99 version stretching it into a full episode thanks to its moody atmosphere and more focuse on Mito-san
Wonderful reaction; I'm glad you are giving the original series some time. While overall I prefer the 2011 reaction, the peaks reached in 1999 are greater than the peaks in 2011. I can't count the Chimera Ant Arc, because 2011 ends after the Greed Island arc. (There was the original televised series that gets to halfway thru Yorknew City arc, and then they caught up to the manga. Over the next few years, Nipon studios extended the story in a series of 3 OVA catch-up series.) In fact, you can watch all parts of 1999, then continue seamlessly with episode 76 of 2011. I didn't notice you mention it, but Kite is a primary character in chapter 1 of the manga. Having his intro up front vastly improves Gon's motivations in the Chimera Ant arc.
I wouldn't recommend Greed Island OVAs. The quality dropped considerably, the studio changed (director and animators too) and animation went from hand drawn to "proto" digital, which is really lackluster specially for the arc, specially considering Greed Island is a game and 2011 animation it's perfect for that atmosphere
I really really hope you make a reaction series out of the 1999 version. I've no problem waiting till you finished the 2011 version at all. Or longer, if you need some more time. I just want you to do it right, and get as much out of either version as you can.
About Ging abandoning Gon. What Mito said about her lie and Gon reaction to it is canon but in 2011 when Gon and Killua returned on Whale Island you have already hear the whole story. Ging came to grandma and asked take care of Gon for a while but Mito was mad and won custody over Gon. But looking at Ging character and how he easily changed the name of his friend legally, it seems to me he still let this happen. Because if he wanted to visit Gon he would do it. He is one of the greatest Hunter, he don’t care about some law
Anyone that hasn’t seen this version of hxh I must say it’s worth the watch. It has a lot of anime original stuff.. but it’s good The newer version is more true to the manga than the old version Enjoy!
Mito taking custody of Gon from Ging is canon. Other than Gon's mom being Mito's sister (which could also be a translation thing), the first episode of the 1999 version is more faithful to the manga in every regard, and also elevates the material from chapter 1 to the next level.
Yup, alot of the people who watched the 2011 ver haven't even read chapter 1 of the manga and perpetuate misinformation just to make the 2011 omissions seem better.
The fact that gon is good with animals is the reason he confidently wanted to barged into the Zoldycs mantions even tho there is a guard “dog” mike. He was sure he can tame it just like the foxbear. But the guard gave him a reallity check that Mike isn’t like a regular animal. I think those missing details are important that give more insight to the story. Just like other have mentioned, I hope you could check the 99 version after the end of th 2011 one.
i was sad that you started the 2011 version because there's so much more for you to enjoy and talk about in the 1999 version. A much more cinematic and beautiful experience. It's not perfect (it has filler and some pacing issues) but there are perfect episodes. At least check and compare Gon vs Hanzo, Gon vs Hisoka, Kurapika kills Uvogin, Chrollo vs Zoldycks. It's night and day, hand drawn, camera motion, color design, color pallette, OST, tone. Big etcera of things the 90 anime did much better than the new ones.
Considering 2011 has a ton more episodes, including the chimera ant story, I certainly wouldn't say there's "more" to talk about and enjoy in the 99 show. What's there is mostly great but I would absolutely rather see him experience the stories in the 2011 show than finish the 99 one never seeing them.
i love the 1999 series, even if they didn't finish with the story in the end, sadly. it has such a great voice cast, and i love that it doesn't shy away from darker stories, as you will hopefully discover throughout the show.
Great idea from whoever to watch this episode before watching the next episodes in 2011. I'd say the one big thing 2011 did wrong was not introducing kite in the pilot.
I'm not sure why Patreons suggested this episode before his next episodes of 2011 version as you could see he connected the dots so the surprise isn't there after Greed Island and the introduction to the character. Surprised Patreons suggested that before and not after this post Greed Island episode. Aaanyway, I would be down to see you react to the whole 1999 series after 2011, would be great :) I haven't seen it either but I must watch it because I really liked this 1999 first episode.
They didn't, patreons suggested it as soon as he started the series and he said he would do it as soon as possible. But at the end he kept delaying the reaction until almost the end of greed island, where they told him he couldn't delay it anymore, I think he watched it after ep 71 or 72.
20:16 That's why watching an episode from a different adaptation in order to make sense of something within the current version is just BS. Each adaptation is different and you can experience one or the other, yet putting one episode in the context of a different adaptation is just uselessly confusing.
This EP is canon from the manga. 2011 just cut it off. 🤷🏻♂️ At the start of this EP, Gon was at 9, but when he's trying to catch a guardian fish he's at 12 years old. It's clear in manga, and as you said before that Gon look much younger.
There are many fillers already lol. Kite stuff cut off(and everything related like Kon) is the only crime from first episode of 2011 adaptation. Manga superior anyway
@@knightcommander5694 I didn't say that every episodes in 1999 is canon, did I? I literally said "This EP" So I have no idea why you tried to "lol" on my comment. And I knew that 1999 is full of fillers, but he said himself in his discussion that he might considered the possibility to react on 1999 version after 2011. Not just me wanting to see it and forcefully offered it for him. I don't know you, but I, myself, watched this show more than 40+ times (2011 alone, and countless on 1999, plus reading manga and re-visiting the story with a lot of reaction creators) So I just feel quite exciting if someone like him is thinking about making it on 1999 version. And it's okay to watch them because fillers in 1999 version is masterpiece and added so many depth to the character or storytelling by its style. So why just can't enjoy both? I appreciate 1999 version as much as he can because it was released back in my time, the artistic style the musical in the background, mood & tone, so many to explore back in time. 🤷🏻♂️
@@ratthapol249and I clearly said that there are many fillers ALREADY meaning this episode. Many just add nothing to dragged plot. Others changed canon(mito as sister of Gons mom) or characterisation. Gon wouldn’t cry because he was abandon. He hide it thinking that he must deserve meeting Ging and he is curious about hunters because he want to know why being Hunter more important than raising their children. And the way Gon left Whale Island. One filler that leads to another. I am absolutely sure in ideal world we could see adaptation where both first episodes of 99 and 11 merged since I don’t like 1 ep of 2011 were dragged either because of the cut stuff with Kite. But here we are. At the end of the day manga is superior
@@knightcommander5694 I knew about Mito as sister of Gon's mom stuff, I knew not everything is canon and manga is superior. I knew the scene where Gon look sad and cry about abandonment, it wasn't there in manga, but it wasn't contradict to his character. Because he did look sad when he told Kite that he doesn't have a dad. (he looked down to the ground) And it took three years time to skip, until he came up with the mindset that being Hunter is that great to Ging to left Gon. So he can interpret his abandonment in another way later on. It's make sense, not really contradict.
@@knightcommander5694 Though, I believe it's worthy for him if he wanted to, or if he decide to not go for it, I'm okay with that. So I don't really know why you tried LOL my comment in the first place 🤷🏻♂️
Wonder if anyones told him about pregnancy stone (which wasnt presented in the anime), i know he mentioned panda maid... but in all likeliness gon has no mother and is a clone of sorts. Atleast, thats been the leading fan theory for a decade with no real contest.
Not really, it has been more of a meme theory for comedic purposes for 20 years until that for some reason some anitubers bought it and started putting it out as an actual serious thing because that's their content and how they make money. I really hope no one actually believes there's any possibility of Gon, the protagonist, being a nen thing made with a card where Ging impregnated himself, like, let's be serious. Also, the mother is confirmed in the story, Mito asked Ging about her when he returned with Gon to Whale Island and he said they "別れた" which means they either stopped being a couple, or she died (most likely the second considering how that idea is hammered down).
Not really sensible of the actual content or faithful to the original, in many ways. However, when it doesn't stray from the subtext and the actual story it adapts, this show excels at increasing the mood and conveying more strongly things. However, this initial part is really a weak section for this arc, and it's more difficult to accept when it has so much unnecessary filler and changes (Like, having Mito being her aunt from Gon's mother side).
This is a very hard one......are you ready??? 2011 is a cartoon for kids Even pervert Hisoka, dark killer kilua very bright and energetic and some sense of justice But 1999 is purely dark Full of destiny, fate, vicious, hopeless
2011 f*cked up some moments and tone in the beginning but at least its more faithful adaptation overall. Even omitted Kite doesn’t hurt as much as perv Killua and Kurapika shying like he is corny anime woman. Yeah that soooo dark sooo no childish
