Hunting Hinds with the Gazelle | DCS World 

So cool to watch. This was actually what happened in Ecuador in 1995 in the war against Perú. We had the Gazelle´s and Perú had the Hinds. They ended up loosing like 12 helicopters, whilst Ecuador had 0 aircraft loss. Great video!

Pretty sure I was one of those Hinds! Was in that server on dec 3rd exactly around the area shown on your vid. I noticed a Gazelle hanging about....I passed one while doing a run on some AAA, then turned about to see where the Gazelle went and for some reason it was headed straight for me. Got really close and put some bursts of 30mm into its windshield. Wonder if that was you as most people don't try to attack a Hind in one of those. Wild.

I started flying in this server a couple of days ago and it is so much fun, though I always end up being shot down in every flight as a Huey lol as someone who's always done PvE since I started in DCS a couple of years ago (mostly in Hoggit's At War servers and Rotorheads), PvP is definitely a bit more intense. ED should really have made the Mi-24V instead the P. It would have been far more effective in DCS as 12,7x108 mm Yak-B would be tearing all light vehicles (including most APC's) from under 1000 meters, that is similar range for the AH-64 AWS accuracy (the Yak-B can actually go to 1000-1500 meters as effective range as it has smaller spread than AWS, but loses penetration against APC level armors quickly). All the lightly armored vehicles like most SAM systems (Strela-10, OSA, Tunguska and so on) are as well vulnerable to 12,7 mm from under 1000 meters, but you really want to take those anyways with ATGM or rockets so arguments that 30 mm cannon is better is more of a fallacy than real thing. When it comes to self-defense, the Yak-B was what military wanted for European combat. Situation was different in Afghanistan where Mi-24 was required to fly at high altitude and outside the 12,7 mm HMG ranges (2000-3500 meters effective range) and so on they were very ineffective with a 12,7 mm Yak as prepared firing position on ground required direct hit to the shooter and at those ranges it was just very unlikely. When the enemy on the ground had advantage as they didn't need to hit the man size target behind a HMG but a huge attack helicopter against clear sky. So the answer for the advantage that mujahideen had with HMG's was to equip Mi-24 with 30 mm accurate and longer range cannon. So that Mi-24 could fly toward the HMG (because frontal flat glass in canopy is armored against 23 mm HEI-T) starting the strafe from 4 km and then starting firing from 2-2.5 km and extend off from 1 km. Maintaining much better change to survive and deliver those 30 mm HE grenades on the approximate area of the HMG firing positions. And no more direct hit was required, 5-7 meters effective explosion area was a thing in the European land, but in rocky Afghanistan that became 10-15 meters because all the rocks and pebbles fragmented and flew all around like fragments from larger grenades. In the DCS that is not simulated (maybe in the future) where not just the warhead but as well the terrain affects the effectiveness of the explosion and fragments. And we need direct hits to be effective. As well damage modeling is extremely weak (90's level) where units HP is calculated from few different directions and if unit is set to have one side a invulnerability against 12,7 mm then it is so from any range and you can't touch it no matter what. While we would need proper angle and velocity and so on calculations. And the 12,7 mm would become very effective at those 1000 meters but still requiring the direct hit that it can maintain with high firing rate and long bursts. The 30 mm is less useful against air threats because the whole helicopter needs to be turned toward the threat and get aligned with it. With Yak-B it is enough to get that target about 120 degree cone at front as gunner can as quickly as turn the aiming device on target to be shooting at it, spraying the aircraft and if not damaging already then at least force to brake off before doing so. And this is against helicopters up to 1.5-2.5 km. Accuracy is not a problem as the computer calculates for Yak-B the proper main lead and all that gunner needs to do is to keep the crosshair on the target and adjust aiming based tracers if needed (as the computer doesn't know the range on air targets like on ground targets, and is limited to radar altimeter estimation that target is at same altitude as ground under helicopter). Anyone who has flown against AI in Mi-24V knows that gunner is a sniper, make a mistake and fly too close in Attack plane and it will nail you. Excluding the unrealistic AI accuracy, the effectiveness is same as humans would. And it is scary that what a Mi-24 would do when it starts to hunt smaller helicopters or all kind soft targets as it can cut pieces anything very quickly. ED should now later on make a Mi-24V variant as only the front canopy is slightly different, the front would get the targeting system and some flight instruments moved to left panel. The right side stays same. The pilot cockpit gets 30 mm removed for fixed 12,7 mm (HMG is stowed boresight for pilot use). ED would easily make extra profits with small change (no need to really adjust the flight modeling than add new gun recoil) and make it add-on for Mi-24P module for $30 and I could bet that 80% of the Mi-24P owners would buy that V add-on.

20th century : They were supposed to engage MI 24 with slow low powered SA 341 armed with one single 20mm canon...just to protect our SA 342 M HOT attacking Varsaw pact tanks... I must admit it was very much courageous or madness may be...but they also seemed to have so fun flying ...WW1 air combat tactics !! Great SIM and great SIM pilots. Did it yesterday , shot down an Mi8 before ground fire got me , I spent 30 min before dodging Migs looking for me , next week I’m gonna try HOT 3 on em 😬 too bad Mistrals aren’t allowed for now

they were lucky you had no AA rockets. once i surprised a Gazelle hovering behind some trees (with my Hind)... Ok i Was also surprised lol. i came sideways around those trees - we were very close nose to nose and i shot a bunch of S8 at him. he made it to get around me and pulled and pushed his cyclic so hard around he couldnt get away. I placed a 30mm Salve into his Fenestron......peewww.😬

I mean bro is it really that much slower to just say "hey theres a mi-24 on your 6 *username* " instead of "charlie foxtrot skipped down a long narrow passage on your six over and out. " is that really effective communication? It just keeps people who aren't burried deep up to their neck with a 1000 dollar hotas and 2000 dollars worth of planes from enjoying the game and participating. It's like having spanish friends who can speak English just fine, normally do speak English most of the time and choose to communicate in Spanish around you.
