Hunting invasive species can be a useful conservation tool and source of sustainable food.
Invasive species often refer to a species of animals or plants that have proliferated in an environment where they have not evolved. These species are often aggressive and thrive in these new environments, which is detrimental to the wildlife around them.
In this video, I share some of the experiences that I’ve had hunting invasive species in the United States. In particular, I lead many groups through hunting excursions in Texas where we are often hunting species like axis deer (non-native to the area), wild pigs, or nilgai antelope. I also share experiences of hunting axis deer in Hawaii where the animals have no natural predators.
However, hunting invasive species can desensitize us in ways that do not always bode well for high ethics, morality, and tastefulness that many non-hunters need in order to be on board with our endeavors.
That’s why my #1 suggestion when it comes to hunting these species is to reframe the way we look and talk about it.
