That was probably the best advice I've ever heard given on slingshot hunting. I think too many people have this image of slingshots as being this weapon they had as a child that ultimately was rather inaccurate because they picked up whatever rock was lying on the ground and shot. At least in my generation, about every kid I ever met had a 'wrist rocket' they would mess with and soon either the bands would break or they'd get bored with it and it would end up on the bottom of the closet. What most people who aren't into slingshots don't know is just how very accurate they can be when you've taken the time to learn and practice. Especially how much more accurate they are than that old wrist rocket they had as a kid. What bothers me are comments like 'slingshots shouldn't be hunted with because they aren't accurate.' Well neither is a bow accurate unless you're practiced. I really wouldn't put being accurate with a slingshot any more difficult than being accurate with a bow. While the bow has the potential to take bigger game at much further ranges, both require the same practice to be an ethical hunter.

This video is fantastic. I don't plan on taking any game for at least a few years of practice. I love my shotguns and rifles, but this slingshot game is a whole other animal. It really takes consistency. I won't take a crack at an animal without knowing for a fact I can take it quick. Thanks simpleshot.

Really informative video, huge respect for your ethics - this applies to all forms of hunting really but it's great that you use your position in the slingshot world to promote consideration for the animals we hunt.

Great Video, I learned a lot watching this. I primarily have one of your slingshots for my BOB. Cant think of a better weapon for lightweight, compactness, and if necessary an unlimited ammo supply. However to use it effectively I need to practice more frequently.

im missing the hunting days i had with my gramps. we used to hunt with rifles and we hunt deer. he let me out to hunt squirrel with .22 and im wanting to challenge myself after a few years of not hunting to hunt with a slingshot to be more in tune with the more primitive ways of hunting. im glad i have came across this vid cause i used to own a slingshot a while ago tht had a wristband for a while. it broke and snapped and such, hit me in the face but i learned more from that experience, i ended up getting myself a flippinoutscout to practice in the rural backyard area with 1/4" steel daisy ball bearings. i do honestly plan to go outside to practice but im really excited to see about hunting small game again and going out to enjoy the great outdoors area and make a positive influence. squirrels are more of a pest here in indiana and more specifically, northern indiana. slingshot hunting is legal here too and that adds more into the reasoning to why its important to get into these sorts of things with hunting in general. this videos emphasizes more on the respect of the animal than the personal thrill of the hunt, and i was taught that was the most important thing. i do plan to move to vermont but even then, i will probably evolve to blowgunning to then bowhunting then rifles. basically go through the evolution of hunting so i can appreciate nature to it's fullest and understand the triumphs and stages it took to master the outdoor sport. save other sport such as fishing for much later but outdoors is where i love to see and appreciate where our roots as human beings come from. truth be told, im a little bit drunk but so long as i can voice out what i think and how i personally feel about nature, and share that and influence other(which more than likely got ruined at the point of which i said i was drunk) then that is something that i feel like is worth sharing. thank you very much for sharing this info on slinging and thank you very much for emphasizing on the respect of the game. that always comes first! +1 like in my book

I hope all slingshot hunters read this. Your ethical point of hunting should always be taken most seriously. I totally agree with the distances being shot at a animal. If a head shot can't be taken accurately at a given distance don't do it. Good video Nathan.

Dear Friends: A .375 inch diameter lead ball weighs about 79 grains, a .433 diameter lead ball weighs about 122 grains. I'll leave it up to you to determine which ball has the flatter trajectory and is easier to hit with. Lead has the advantage over steel because you can easily cast your own ammo, which is fun and interesting in itself. It can be done over a wood fire with a single lead ball mold (a "bag" mold) and a small ladle (search "Track of the Wolf").

Great video I just bought a hunting slingshot Barnett Black Widow, but will probably not get past target practice to actual hunting for survival because I doubt I would ever be in that kind of emergency hunger situation. I do think I would prefer a better hunting tool if my survival absolutely depended on hunting.

Can you use 7/16 and 1/2 inch ammo in the ocularis and very thick bands or will the forks break can they withstand a heavy draw for hunting

Well i just dont like how much power comes from single bands, Or even double at the average width for that matter, so i used double bands from 7.25cm tapered to 5.25 on each side snd shoot 7-9mm steel balls with a leather hand guard to counter the hand slap. And oh my god does it fly fast.

I am thinking of getting a Scout XT as my first ever slingshot. Are the bands included with this likely to be powerful enough for hunting, say, a rat at 10-15 m?

Hi Nathan. You just reminded me I needed to order some longer bands for my Torque slingshot. A couple other things. If you can't hit a ping pong ball then I'd say you should hunt a lot more cuz you owe it to your game to give it the best chance of survival possible. ;-) And finally, I get a lot of satisfaction casting my own .36 cal lead ball sliingshot ammo.

The fact that the steel can ricochet is actually a good thing. Looking at physics we know that force occurs when changes in momentum occur. When the ammo hits the target it slows down to a stop, thus applying a force on the game. With lead. That would be it. So you need that force to be good. But when the steel bounces off it undergoes another change in momentum which applies another force to the animal. So you get the same initial force but with steel you get an extra "hit" essentially. Also in the case that you loose your ammo (lets be honest its difficult to find although you should try) steel will not poison the earth like lead will. As well as this if you did find your ammo the steel could be used again but the lead would need to be reformed. Steel is better than lead.

Great article. However, I had a question regarding the best type of ammo. Have you tried to find what your talking about (125 gr) online? Most of it is clay, steele, or glas, and far short of 125 - more like 54, at the most. Do you have a good resource that sells this lead ammo?

How times have changed, with the super fast new elastic formulas, I went from 10mm lead and 1mm bands to 8mm steel and. 5 , i can honestly say I am a more efficient hunter now

Nathan, I live in North Carolina, are you familiar with the hunting laws and regulations? I really want to try out the RAMBONE 2.0 and SCOUT that I have recently purchased. I've killed a few squirrels from 15 yards away with my TORQUE slingshot, and wanted to move on to something more powerful. But now, since im wayy more serious about hunting, and I owe it to the game, and don't want to illegally hunt something that im not supposed to. So are you familiar with the NC hunting laws, where and where we cant hunt, and specifically which animals. Thanks! - from NC

Would fishing sinkers make good ammunition? If so what size

a good target is small 1.5"/40mm cement discs, easily and cheaply made and they explode when you hit them, making a good indicator at range. to make the mold, just cut a 1.5" hole in a 2x2" or 3x3" piece of 3/4" plywood, sand the inside of the hole, screw the piece of plywood to a larger one tightly and you have a mold for the discs, buy some cement, mix it up and pour it in. you can even make many molds and attach them to a single board to increase efficiency.

And if you're just wanting to have fun with learning the mechanics of slingshots (plinking) , raw chickpeas are cheap, fun, & bio-friendly, though not the best for learning aiming ballistics, as they're super lightweight.

Some people only use 9.5mm steel,i can understand this if they use that ammo all the time,they will get to know the flight path over different distances and elevation,if they are using the same band set up as well and their aim is good then i can see no problem as they will be very familiar with the whole set up

Here in UK it's one thing we can do everywhere slingshot hunting. With the bands going about Europe and China were killing with 8mm steel even squirrels you seem far behind on bands in the USA
