Scary storm. Rode it out in gentilly.

I live in western Kenner and we were about 15/20 miles away from the eye on the east side. It got so scary that my wife, kids and I were literally holding hands praying that everyone would be safe, the roof would stay on and the levees didn’t break. Well I think God heard our prayers. Lol. Amazingly we got a brand new roof after hurricane zeta last year and we didn’t lose one shingle. But there were many people in my neighborhood that weren’t so lucky and there homes were destroyed. I cannot believe my family and I was so close to a storm of this magnitude. It was supposed to go further west and when we went to bed the night before it was barely a cat 2. Woke up the next morning and it had 150 mph winds and nearly a cat 5?! Lesson learned. I will NEVER gamble with a storm like that again and put my beautiful family in danger like that. But thank god everyone’s okay and it will be a memory none of us will ever forget. Prayers for everyone who’s lives and dreams have been destroyed by this storm 🙌🙏🙌

I was in Old Metairie and we evacuated about 3 days after. It was terrible. Shocking to see what Kenner looked like on the way out, 1-2 miles west and the damage gradient was stark. Glad you are ok.

This comment is sooo insane to see! When ida hit me I was exactly in Covington Louisiana! That's cool to see someone else's story about what they went through in Ida, especially someone who is from Covington.

That secondary eyewall was, like the NHC said, very prominent in the storm's structure. Some reports from people in the secondary eyewall claim that gusts reached major hurricane force. Remarkable storm. P.S. A storm developing two or three eyewalls is a sign of an eyewall replacement cycle. This is why Ida didn't reach category 5 and why pressure started to rise shortly after peaking. If you want an in-depth discussion on the storm at the time, the NHC makes transcripts of their discussions for the public every three hours (usually at the same time as each advisory released).

I do think it will be upgraded to category five in postseason analysis Because there were winds to support at least 155 at its peak And it wasn’t really much of an eye wall replacements cycle. The structure would’ve completely fallen apart like Katrina

My only short term regret was not having my emergency radio with me so I could atleast know what was happening once the power outage started. Probably wouldn’t have gotten many stations locally but it would have been something.

I'm not sure the exact distance, but I believe the western eye wall came within 10, maybe 15 miles of my place here in Watson Louisiana. She was uh, pretty windy.

I was renting a home in Hammond. Home flooded as it was backed up to a farmland drainage ditch. Total loss of home. Home condemned a few days later. Had to move back to Charleston which took nothing short of a miracle as Hammond was utterly destroyed. I was living on the driveway for 7 days with my 2 dogs waiting to find a rental truck, which was over 2.5 hours away. I lived in south FLA and been through many hurricanes, but nothing like this one.

South Bayou Lafourche took the worst of it, the damage is proof, yet the news talks about new orleans and the out skirts more. Sad. Homeless people and new orleans complains about the lost power. And a tree down. Offshore work boats that were in port clocked 180 to 220 mph winds. I rode it out . It was nasty.

As a New Orleanian, I am just shocked that they spend more time talking about a metro area of 1,000,000+ people and not a place where the entire parish has fewer people than Metairie.

Boohoo.. poor New Orleans😂. Totally missed the city, but yes, lets focus on the one tree branch down in your yard and the couple of shingles that were blown off your roof. Give me a break.
