Mike Theiss of Ultimate Chase video documents Hurricane Katrina's wrath on the United States by documenting both landfalls. This video is "Part 1" and contains Katrina's first landfall on the South Florida area as a strengthening Cat-1 Hurricane. You will see many tourists were out in the wind and did not take this Hurricane serious resulting in many avoidable deaths. The people seen in this video were NOT with Ultimate Chase and were advised not to go out into the direct force of the wind. They did so anyway so we filmed them since they became part of the story. Katrina was responsible for 14 deaths in Southern Florida.
Mike first films 90mph winds in the Ft. Lauderdale area. Then after dark drives back home through the southern eyewall and finally arrives after 5 intense hours to his condo in Homestead, Florida only to find no power and flooding all the way up to his door step. Mike's roof sustained moderate damage and many large trees went down in his neighborhood. Homestead was spared from Katrina's eye and eyewall but still got hit hard. Once Katrina crossed the Florida peninsula she rapidly intensified and became a Cat-5 Hurricane and caused record breaking storm surge on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and a second disaster in New Orleans as the levee's broke and flooded the city. Watch "Part 2" of Hurricane Katrina on the Ultimate Chase RU-vid channel and see the record breaking 28 foot storm surge caught on video from Gulfport, Mississippi....

I remember hearing the news say Katrina will hit tomorrow then looked out the window and watched all the light poles explode like nothing, but those Palm trees where just eating that shit like it was nothing, even saw somebody's roof land in my yard, I looked back at the TV hearing the camera man and news lady screaming and running saying IVE JUST BEEN ALERTED THAT THE THE STORM IS HERE, THE STORM IS HERE ITS HERE!!!! The worst part was me and my sister were kids at the time going through our first hurricane at our grandma house by ourselfs because my grandma didn't know the storm was gonna hit that day, she was at the store collecting food and stuff and got hit by the storm miles away from us. The worse part was, we literally got hit by the eye on my first hurricane to remember. I've been through hurricanes before but never knowingly, but I got to know Katrina and that left horrifying memory's while praying my grandma got back in time.

@@hot_shot_suaceboss6556 it was horrifying, but it was a rush and even though I was scared shitless it was a good memory specially cause I didn't die, but also every other hurricane wasn't as scary to me. And I get to enjoy those rare moments when the whole city lights was out and I got to see what the night sky really looks like with hurricane Katrina and Wilma and those next few days was nothing but fun and hanging out with the other kids on my street.

We didn't imagine that Katrina would ended being to be Andrew's Big sister. She destroyed Louisiana and surpassed Andrew as worst hurricane in history.

@@wafflethefurry6683 The costliest and arguably most notorious storm in modern American history, Katrina made landfall in South Florida as a category 1 hurricane. It then quickly amassed speed all the way to category 5, before coming back down to category 3 as it entered Louisiana and Mississippi. In the Greater New Orleans region, a region-wide storm surge-- and what has since been revealed to be shoddy engineering and reckless cost-cutting-- led to a systemic failure in New Orleans’s levee system. 80% of the city was flooded, leading to just under 2,000 fatalities and severe structural damage estimated at a staggering $161 billion (compared to $3.4 billion the Bahamas.

Yea because it was gonna hit Orlando head on at first and I cheered for joy, then it literally said fuck that I'm going for the ass and went straight down at a 90 degree angle and head everybody literally thinking it was gonna hit land a day later, I remember looking at the news while the news lady was at the beach saying this. I looked out the window waiting for my grandma to get back from the store getting prepared for the storm and saw light poles exploding, then I looked back at the TV and I literally saw the camera man and news lady running to the news van for their life's saying they've just been alerted that the storm is hitting NOW!, I looked at my sister and started shitting myself thinking, my grandma doesn't know the storm is here, and I was about to start crying because we just kids alone at the house, poles are exploding just from the storm alone, I don't wanna die it was like an hour or 2 before she got back to the house and I remember helping her get everything in and the rain was so painful for me to take it hurts I never knew a rain storm could have been so terrifying. Long story short, my house was covered by somebody else's roof, people died, and no storm after that ever scared me ever again, I know have a permanent fear of lighting and hurricane Wilma was the best hurricane that ever happened to me after katrina, it made me realize this storm ain't shit compared to metal poles exploding and flying out the ground.

I was working as a cabana boy at the Doubletree Ocean Point Resort in Sunny Isles Beach when it hit. I had lifeguard buddies watch over me as I secured all the rental kayaks, chairs, etc with chains. I remember using a 3 person kayak as a surfboard. West winds of 35+ knots actually cleaned up an otherwise choppy 8 - 12 foot swell. I finally managed to get out past the breakers and took the first available wave. Big mistake. My lifeguard buddies were already on their way to get me. I leaned back, stood on the seat, and just as the wave peaked, I buried the nose. At that point I tossed the paddle and thought to myself well, I'm young, happy, and (with this job) have experienced the pleasure of many beautiful women in my life. I made my peace with god. I thought for sure once I had landed from the 15 + foot slingshot launch (I could tell because I remember seeing the hideous crocs a hotel guest standing on the 2nd floor balcony was wearing) the impact would knock me out and I'd subsequently drown. Worse, the tumbling 90 lb chunk of plastic I had been standing on would cream me. Neither happened. My lifeguard buddies scooped me up with the jet ski and said that was the gnarliest wipeout they'd ever seen. My paddle disappeared. The kayak washed up on Newport Beach pier. Luckily that's my lame Katrina story

It's just a big fun game to lean into the wind when you can take shelter nearby...but get caught with no protection, with nothing to hang onto and a higher wind velocity, and it's no game anymore.

that was not a hurricane when it went by fort Lauderdale it was just a tropical storm since 1947 we have had 1 one hurricane Wilma in 2005 nothing else but tropical storms which can do plenty of damage Richard in fort Lauderdale since 1975

richard none The storm did hit Fort Lauderdale! I lived on the beach in Lauderdale by the Sea and I got stuck in the hurricane and couldn't leave because it hit before they said we had to evacuate. The storm blew out all the windows in my apartment and the door got sucked down to the first floor . I stayed in the bathroom the entire time because it was the only room that didn't have windows blown out. I also Survived Hurricane Andrew and I had to evacuate from Fort Lauderdale and I went to Kendall which was worse, you never know where the hurricane is going to hit. We were preparing to evacuate but the wind gusts came right off of the ocean and blew out the windows and we were not able to leave. As you can see it's more dangerous to be driving in those conditions plus it was a Barrier Island in Lauderdale by the Sea and they pull up the bridges so you are stuck. And I remember around the time of Katrina we had so many hurricanes or storms coming and every time we had to evacuate.

Ok 2 questions. I watched your video of this in Mississippi as well. How did you get there so quick and manager to catch the worst in Mississippi?? ....There's no way any planes were takin off, and those states arent exactly CLOSE. But your driving thru a damn hurricane. How the hell did you get there?? And 2nd, how fast were those winds? Gotta b atleast 50mph. How man a 200lbs person stand there and resist the wind, but a 700lbs pound tree can be shifted?? ....Thats weird

Lol? Katrina crossed Florida on Thursday, August 25th as a Cat 1. It entered the gulf and strengthened to a Cat 5 before changing course for Louisiana and made landfall Monday, August 29th as a Cat 3. So this guy had about 4 days to drive to Mississippi. And when you're driving into a storm, there is generally less traffic. So no, he didn't drive like a bat out of hell. You should try googling your questions first next time. This site also has their wind speeds for you to look up. Enjoy. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Hurricane_Katrina

Well I posted this 3 months ago so it's a little hard to remember. But I wanna say I did look it up. I probably would not have asked such a question without checking the dates first. I'm not saying your wrong. ....You must have been there, so you would know. I just don't appreciate being told to check when I did

Mississippi like a 2 day drive from ft lauderdale. This was 4 days before it hit Mississippi. Simple math, he made it.
