Husqvarna 372xp X-Torq vs. Original Edition Differences & What Straight Gassed Damage Looks Like

Tried to keep it basic and "light", not too lectur-ey while still pointing out some of the more important differences. Not my favorite subject, but since I have to rip a pile of them apart to build the cases into a better place, might as well talk about that as its a question that shows up frequently.
AND I didn't point out that while the nylon caged bearings began to show up before 2010, they are now the norm as they populate every X-Torq 372 variant I have seen to this point in time.

That’s pretty cool how did you learn to do all that. I’m diving down that road too but with Stihl. I work for the forest service in California and every station has a pile of broken saws the tags always say (broken) so I’m staring to play dr. Saw. Cool video.

I will tell you - my new 372 grows on me. It is easy to start, easy to tune and I have not had as many development problems with it as I had with my Ms 440 and 460. It was somewhat of a learning curve for me, because the assembly is not the same as a Stihl. Regardless, it is running and cutting good, now. The one dynamic difference I have noted is it does not maintain its tune over a wide range of temperature and humidity as does a Stihl. It is not unusual for my 372 to loose 1,000 rpms if the temperature or humidity drops substantially from one day to another.

The saw shop I use in nwest wisconsin does not usually rebuild an x torq. He simply reverts/rebuilds to the original 372 xp or he encourages us loggers to purchase a new 562xp or if in bigger timber a new 576xp depending on how bad the damage is. It seems like the 372 xtorqs are more likely to suffer a catastrophic failure than the original 372 xp.

@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 6 лет назад
BUT I really like my 562's, really the right blend for me. And the XPW iteration of the 372 for larger work...to old to hang on to anything bigger at this point in life.
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 6 лет назад
And I thought about that approach...but that too gets expensive to get right....explanation is in the video for those who really listen. I've had a few come through with just the top end and intake related stuff swapped...:) Not a fan of that approach. Actually the best AND lest expensive fix usually is a better bearings and a new Top End. Thats my preference for real customers. And the folks who work with me get that new top end with the "X-Torq" dividers gutted, solves a pile of issues. Think a hint of that mod sneaked into a video a year or two back...:) Not ready to really go through that here to the general public, just for my local folks.

Does tthe 372xpw oem 75 cc top end need port work or is it stronger but just as responsive as an old 372?
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 6 лет назад
Thats a loaded question! None of them need port work! The XPW has smaller transfers to bring the power band down a few hundred RPM's. But while it likes to run at a lower RPM it makes good power, and is pretty snappy. Design to pull a longer bar west coast style vs. have the higher RPM's a standard 372 has. So it just depends on what you are looking for. I like a XPW with an 8 pin. Easy power.

Hi there. Great video. I learned a lot as I have (7) 372xp/xt that need to be brought back to life from a tree service. I had one question - why did you get rid of the decomp? I thought with the bigger cc saws like this it's useful to have. Thanks!
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 2 года назад
It is, when I was younger and stronger removing decomps eliminated a source of leaks and the increased compression made them start faster... assuming I had the arm strength. Now older...I'm putting them back in some saws. In fact my 562HTSS has too much compression for the pull start.. was breaking them left and right so put one in that saw too

You put an Xtorq air filter holder on this saw. Did you use an Xtorq carb, too? The reason I knew it was an Xtorq base was because I saw the divider in it. The XP version does not have a divider.

Really enjoy your videos and learning a lot! Can you take a case half from a 372 XP and a case half from a 372 XP XT, mate them together, and build a 372 XP (not XT) from it? I've got junk saws that often have one good side and I'd like to be able to build XP's using whatever halves are available.
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 2 года назад
I guess u can, just with the older case the "relief" for the cylinder flange is less as well as the casting is smaller in that area. I would check to see the deck height is close enough before "marrying" those differential case halves together. But the case screw locations and center of the main bearing pockets should be close enough to get something running :) Would I recommend it ? no

Do you know if Farmertec makes all the original 372 parts? I haven't found a whole complete set on Ebay or there website. I don't mind buying everything seperate but I'm having issues finding a crankcase that isn't XP. I thought maybe using 365 362 371 cases but I'm not sure if they are xp as well. It is a wonder there was not an explosion due to how hot those connecting rod journals got. it had to be about 700 degrees to turn them that blue. Gas ignites a whole lot less than that. That could have been a real Molotov cocktail.

@purginss
@purginss 5 лет назад
I see how you twisted the tank to get it in, makes sense now. What is confusing is the xtorque stuff. What are the new Huztl chinese 372xp's? I'm trying to make 2 out of 2 clapped OE 372's and 1 Huztl 372. The Huztl says x torque, is a 2 ring piston but the decomp is on the side. I was told they were identical to a real 372xp but this would prove different, right?
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 5 лет назад
OE and X-Torqs don't mix on any thing related to top ends and intake. I've extensively covered that in the video's. I would always prefer to build into an OE vs. X-torq.
@purginss
@purginss 5 лет назад
@@afleetcommand So are the Huztl 372's a copy of the OE or the xtorque? Or is the top end it's own thing? Since the OE is shorter, which would the huztl top cover, handle and brake handle fit?

Is it better to get rid of divider in air filter holder of 372 XTorq?
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 5 лет назад
If you have the understanding and skills, get rid of the divider from filter holder to cylinder and intake boot. Leave the divider in the carb, but die grind the intake port to a sharp edge on its divider, favoring the intake port to the crank case.... Deck the cylinder .020 and you have a running saw...:)

What caused the two saws to fail like they did? What could have prevented the failure, or what could have been done differently?
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 3 года назад
Assuming you are asking about the 372 x-torq's? A few things will help them. Run them a little "rich" by setting the "no load" RPM in the 12800-13000 vs the max 13300. Make absolutely certain you keep the fins clean so they cool properly. ( Any saw really ). Another subtle one is don't over tighten the chain. I've seen that a few times where I see the chain on the saw "twang" tight ... :) Husqvarna seems to have made some upgrades in the 2016/17 time frame as I don't see the ones made later than 2017 failing any faster than any other saw. All saws will eventually wear out but they seem to have the 372's to where they fit right in with the rest of the saws on the market for service life.

What the original edition & X-torq? Yes and no. Dimensionally any crank from that series of saw will fit in any other. OE 365 will "fit" in a 372, 372 X-Torq in a Jonsered 2165. But there are slight differences within the series. Best to keep "XTorq" cranks in X-Torq saws and OE in OE saws with ONE exception. An X-Torq crank will work well with a 51.4 XPW top end as it has a heavier piston than the other "OE's" in the class. Bottom line is if your building a hobby saw, none of that matters so mix and match that cranks & pistons. If you are building a saw for a pro.... little differences will add life to your build if u keep the cranks matched to the piston (weight) they were designed for. The differences are small enough it won't matter for most.
