Husqvarna 562xp HTSS Build - Popup Piston & Cylinder "Decking" Mod & Case Interference Issues

Really started to evaluate the builds I have done this last few months. Had to make some revisions in my "recipe" because of variances I've see from saw to saw. Came to the conclusion they really don't fit the theme of my channel and this will explain why. I'll develop my builds further for my Hobby & GTG saws but probably won't put the builds up on RU-vid. The theme is simple builds with simple tools. The 562 HTSS builds are anything but that.
I guess with the right tooling they are fun and not too difficult, but you aren't going to find those tools at Lowes or Home Depot.
I think these builds will fit under the Atlas Lathe Project. For those who need a reason to run their machine tools. Simple machining to build the tools and then simple machining to accomplish the mods...but yet again not something a typical hobbyist will want to get into.
But I really like my HTSS 562 builds.....and I have more tweaks to that transfer and intake coming in the next one. And the goal of this video is to "highlite" some of the interference issues you have to consider and overcome should you want to modify the compression by lowering the cylinder.

That's funny...I never thought I would really like them either. But they are pretty amazing. One of those saw concepts that grows on you.

Wow that some lathe setup, cool vid.

I slide the cylinder onto the arbor, side it back then put the tiniest drop of super glue, then slide it up tight. I mark where I put the glue, then a quick light heating with a propane torch it releases. There's no chance of tweaking the cylinder one way or another using the tailstock It has worked so good for me. The last one I did was on a Partner P55.

Hey Walt. Still got the 562 itch. I finally joined the Husqvarna group last night and saw you are on there, and wound up here. I'm not a machinist, but was wondering if you could use a boring bar to reach in and make that cut on the bottom of the cylinder? Might be rough with an interrupted cut like that, IDK. I did a gasket delete on an old 570 and used 1184 and 20# fishing line as a gasket. Seems to be working for now. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Awesome video. I'm starting to cut the base also but drilling a small center hole in the top. I would like to to use what you did in your tail stock . I'm new at using a lathe what type of Chuck is that Ang do you think I could get one for a 10 x 26 grizzly lathe ?

I have a 562 and it is getting to the point of a rebuild. I would love to get my saw modified if possible.

There are a bunch of guys who are set up as a business to do that. Brad Snelling being who I would recommend. Randy Evans another.

Great video. What modifications would you recommend for a 562XP? I have done the muffler modification and ground the exhaust heat shield and gasket but I'm looking to do a little more work to piddle around. Thanks!

Need a lathe to go much further....a pop up build makes sense. Compression increase helps a lot of issues with that saw. But to get there isn't easy.

Ah yes, I don't have a lathe. I saw in one of your videos you raised the opening on the bottom of the cylinder for the transfer ports. Did you find this to add power? also have you ever messed with the ignition timing on these saws? Thanks again

I have the CST (Husqvarna Common Service Tool) and contrary to commonly posted info, you can tweak the carbs..:)

Standard things mechanically as with most carb bodies. Can alter ability to deliver fuel supply. Autotune does what it does regardless. More fuel supply capability lets Autotune work with the tweaked saws without seeing numbers in the single digits. Not going to post the particulars on an open forum as that's my tweak. But asking that question, you understand the direction is my guess as other than updates, software/firmware stays the same and does what it does. My tweaked 562's USED to be in the 20's now sit right at 60-65. You figure it out. Did the research while sorting out el46's as I had a lot of "take off" 46's to hack up.

I always raise the flange when I cut the base, that is on top ends that have them. Yes raising up the transfer passage would be a good idea as well. Things are pretty tight in these saws. The surface finish looks pretty god on the cylinder as well, I've seen some ugly machine work from other guys.
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 8 лет назад
I guess I didn't fully explain, but on those saws even if you do a simple base gasket delete you need to cut the flange. That was my point. With the cut base plus gasket I was around where a straight gasket delete would have placed the flange...this is the first saw I've seen where that is the case.
@Andyshine77
@Andyshine77 8 лет назад
I understood. What can happen on some models is, you can still bolt the cylinder down, but the ears on some models will bend in when they are squeezed in the case. The saw will run fine until the piston heats up and will start to seize. So I always make sure there's enough clearance. Without a lathe you can put a chamfer on the flange, or carefully lower the flange with a grinder. Is it the best way? not at all, but it can be done.. Again great video, and very informative as always.

Wonder if a Harbor Freight belt sander, the stationary kind; could put this build back into the "Simple Tools" category. Maybe a way to do Stihl's & Husqvarna 350 squish band tweaks... Maybe another concept to consider. My entire premise is mods a typical hobbyist can do W/O a machine shop. And Thank for the conversation & Feedback!
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 8 лет назад
And..while on this topic, any other Husqvarna's you can think of where the flange would interfere with a base gasket delete? I have a 550 on the bench .... :)
@Andyshine77
@Andyshine77 8 лет назад
Clearance can be an issue on the 390, it's a non issue on all the 372's I've been in. With Stihl sometimes the transfer bulges have to trimmed on the outside. I Haven't played with my 550 yet, from what I can tell it is just a small 562?

walt, this video scared the cr@p out of me. it is not a hobbyist saw. thanks for the warning. it kind of irks me that now when I buy a 562 I can only use it for work and not Play:)

well..you know what I mean. Have to really be thorough when planning tweaks. And if choosing an "expert" builder the same applies. After the analysis I understand the geneses of some of the frustrations that were posted relative to "built" 562's over the last couple of years. All had air leaks as symptoms. My bet is the cylinder flange was at the core and some never did the analysis. Just thinking out loud on the channel...:)

do you not have to take the compression of the gasket into your equation/math? as obviously a new gasket will be thicker than a compressed used gasket (when fitted to the saw) as its the compression which seals the unit. I would imagine you need to take the figure of a compressed gasket rather than a new gasket as the new gasket will be thicker and you may end up taking more off the jug than you needed? just a logical thought. great upload by the way ;o)

I do, but I wanted to focus on the fixturing more that the actual changes. I used a used or "Compressed" gasket for my measurements. Part of the reason I haven't put the actual compression and timing numbers as a focus is different builders are going to have there own idea on what to change. I sort of figured going through the fixturing and overview of how that might work "enables" someone to roll their own vs. doing a detailed documentation on why I do what I do. Like chain sharpening, there are many ways a person might want to take a build but first the basics on how to do the physical change has to be solved before an idea can be put into metal.

Or you just buy a 2166/2172/366/372 and be done with it. Lol! Then you don't have to deal with a computerized carburetor.

that carb is why I avoided this saw. That carb is also a big part of why I now love this saw. I have the 372xpw. I also have the little tiny screwdriver to fit down the little tiny holes to find the little tiny mixture screws. I also have a tachometer to aid in tuning my other saws. none of this is needed with the 562xp. don't get me wrong I won't part with my 372 anytime soon but I do enjoy running the 562

+afleetcommand ah come on man. If you only knew how much money I have spent because of your videos LOL. Don't tell me that and make me tear apart my new saw....Ok I'm telling myself the 372 is for torque. now deep breaths. laying down the 562xp. LMAO
