Husqvarna 701 Supermoto Review - In depth: I've been ripping around the Buckinghamshire countryside on the Husky 701 Supermoto for a couple of weeks now and sadly it's almost time to give the bike back....not though until I tell you everything I've learned about what it's like to live with this bike! In this video I show you what it's like to ride the 701 supermoto in all sorts of conditions and take you through the good and bad things I've learned, I also run through how much one of these puppies is likely to cost you to own and run. I hope you enjoy the video!

Fantastic review. I own a 701 and so far love it. Perfect bike for exploring narrow country lanes. It is a bit less vibey than the older KTM 690 SMC R but I do prefer the looks of the older KTM. The dashboard is a joke being powered by a watch battery with no rev counter or gear indicator which the KTM used to have. Apart from that, one of the best bikes out there!

Great idea of you taking a garage shot on the bike. It helps a lot of judging the heigth of the bike vs that of an average rider. I suggest that you include such shots with all your bike reviews. The styling of the bike is great unlike that of the GS :). Keep on the good work!

BWX its not exactly the same, but close, 30-40lbs more, but regardless it feels super light because the fuel tank is in the rear sub-frame. I own a 2018- 701-SM, Rottweiler Performance kit installed with an Arrow Exhaust, removed 20lbs and gained 10hp, 10nm T, incredible bike. I installed a Husky removable rear storage rack/bag, works perfect and looks good, high quality bike everywhere. 5 oil filters, if taken care of I don’t see how the engine would ever wear out!! I don’t ever see myself without my 701 !!! Oh and crazy Wheelies for days!!!

I own two Husaberg Supermotos.. Husaberg was bought by KTM in the mid-90's and eventually dropped as a brand, however mostly because Husqvarna was the better known brand already (also owned by KTM) and they didn't really want 3 competing in-house brands.. To my understanding they actually rebranded Husaberg to Husqvarna internally and then dropped the "old" Husqvarna as most of the engineers from Husabergs were actually working on the more recent Huskies (and the KTM EXC i guess as that was basically the same bike as the Husaberg FE501/Husqvarna FE501 around 2013/14). The 701 (just like the KTM 690 - basically same bike) have made a big jump in regards to maintenance time and cost. My Husas require an oil change every 10 to 15 hours of street riding (inclusive filter) and i check the valves every 30 hours. Such high maintenance requirements have the advantage that you quickly learn doing those things yourself (and after having done this a few times it's not a taunting task anymore). From my experience the Michelin Pilot Power (2ct or 3) are one of the best tires for the SuMos. I even put them onto my Z1000 now and they improved the handling of the bike greatly, even in wet situations (used to have Pirelli on them).
@johnDukemaster
@johnDukemaster 2 года назад
The name Husaberg came up when some of the employes at Husqvarna "went rough" after Husky was sold to...was it Cagiva? Anyroad, they started a new company in Askersund Sweden and they called it Husaberg. If you go there, they have a campsite called Husaberg camping just south of town. Great little harbour by the lake Vättern. (And for you Swedes, I know it's not called Vättern north of Stjärnsund!) Great little town with great roads, lots of lakes and biiiig forests.

You've given a service price at 6000m that includes a 'valve check' but given how often this is needed my suspicion would be that a valve clearance adjustment (a much more labour intensive task) would be necessary. The price would then move up?

I was looking at the two side-by-side today (which brought me to this review), and there was very little difference in seat height. I believe the SM is listed at 890 and the Enduro at 910. Both high, but at that height, what is 20mm?
@im160bpmplus
@im160bpmplus 5 лет назад
If youre short, you dont sit on a 36" dirtbike straight, you sit with your right bumcheek on the seat and your right foot covering the rear brake. Gives you inches gain on the left leg and much safer.

Excellent review as usual ! Only thing I didn't like is the rather expensive ~£400 service cost every 6000 miles but then that's probably better than the Honda CR450L which mentions valve check and adjust every 1,800 miles. As an occasional 2nd bike it would be great fun nonetheless.

They should ban parking within 1/2 mile of schools, would ease the traffic congestion and give the kids some exercise and the parents for that matter.
@alansmilealot
@alansmilealot 5 лет назад
I agree, in Atlanta alot of the congestion comes from people picking up/dropping off kids at school or daycare. Also to add to the mess, you have people riding bikes in the middle of the lane during a person work commute. Now to top it off even more, there are people tend to tailgate too much and not pay any attention.

@jamesfairmind2247

Two points. The bike is transformed by Conti Road Attack 3 tyres. Much more grip on greasy back roads, more easily flickable without the flatter track profile of the SM tyres and twice the tyre mileage at least. Second point, swapping the can for an Akro or Arrow will not only produce more power but reduce fuel consumption considerably and therefore increase tank range substantially.
@Jajeweet
@Jajeweet 5 лет назад
I would have to disagree on the tires there
@jamesfairmind2247
@jamesfairmind2247 5 лет назад
@@Jajeweet I guess it depends what sort of riding you do and where. The Conti RA3 was voted 'Best backroad tire for Europe ' for a good reason. If you ride fast and hard on badly maintained British country back roads with loose gravel, pot holes, diesel spills and surface changes (right on the apex of bends often) then track based tires simply get knocked off line and slide all over the place whereas the Conti RA3 stays on line like the bike is mounted on rails and grips no matter what. It also lasts 3 times longer than the equivalent Conti Track Attack on a SM. Also I find that after 3 or 4 hard rides really pushing on the track based tires go off, particularly Pirelli super sport type tires which quickly lose their initial grip after a few hard rides. Track based tires also need a lot more counter steer when cranked over hard. Fact is most people out there just do not ride hard enough to realise this stuff! The number off SM riders I see putting their leg out on corners when the bike isn't even cranked over much is a total joke! The only time my boot touches the tarmac is when it is getting ground down along with the peg underneath it as I piss past them art twice their speed.!
@deadbugdavey1744
@deadbugdavey1744 5 лет назад
One thing ive found annoying about the 701 is when riding in wet conditions, especially on dirty roads the mud and water comes off the front mud guard and gets thrown back onto the headlight area. The mud then bakes on to the light until you wash it off. This is annoying and if riding a distance it is a little dangerous this time of year. Great bike though

My dream bike… I will only be able to afford it secondhand, but it’s ok. My goal is to have one within these next 2 years.

Only thing I do not like about the 690 engine is the 6000 mile services that require a valve check every time. This makes doing your own servicing a lot harder and it's use as a proper cross country adventure bike quite limited.

Strange it’s an 18 plate with the old style plastics? Any idea if it’s a late registered 16 model? New one is a nicer ride, fair bit faster.

That's what I was wondering they did away with the map switch dial in 17 no map adjustment. It's kind of funny to watch people review bikes that they don't own.

Can’t decide between the new 690smc r and the 701. Still don’t understand the differences between the two.

I just bought a 2016 Husky FE350S, great bike, not the same class as the 701 of course. There are two faults in the design and I'm guessing the 701 has the same faults. First, the cold start pull button ( choke for fuel injection) is buried so far under the tank that it's very difficult to pull out, and impossible to push back in unless you get off the bike. My Triumph T100 cold start is very easy to manipulate by comparison. Secondly, the digital speedo/odometer has no tachometer in it. I bought an aftermarket digital unit for my old Yamaha WR450 and it has every feature possible, even coolant temp. But still a great bike!

How about that exhaust pipe that runs next to the left foot? Are the protections any good? I would fear for any plastic on my trousers.

I'd say the KTM 790 Duke was a better bet - same price, faster and better equipped whilst almost as light. Of course I am biased as I have one!

for a street only bike I would agree with you, I love the 701 in its enduro form, I never really understood people's fascination with the supermoto conversion....

pointless to do if you don't change faulty clutch slave cylinder gasket. Bike will catastrophically fail anyway. Same with the clutch itself. Oh and the weak bolts holding gas tank (more of an issue on Enduro version). Also super weak rear brake lever, crap gas cap and on ktm version famous top end rollers issue. I can go on and on. If you fix all of those this bike is as good as presented here.

@@Spartansrule118 Many faults for sure. If you know them all you could make it work. At this weight and power there is no competition with such long oil change intervals.

With this type of bike, it's a good idea to learn to adjust valves yourself. It has screw type valves, which means you don't need any parts other than a screwdriver, so that 400 a year turns into 0. Also, I don't think it's necessary to do them every 6000, usually they only go out of spec after 12000 miles. I don't know why they charge so much though, my local mechanic adjusted the valves on my KTM for 30€, which seems reasonable to me considering it's not very difficult to do.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 5 лет назад
Oh right I didn't realise they were screw adjustable - sounds like a good idea to do them yourself then as you say....

@@TheMissendenFlyer Nevermind, apparently only the older version of the 690 has screw type valves, the newer ones have shims. Still, people seem to say it's not that difficult to do, so for 400£ I'd say it's worth it.
