This is a review on 2 lawn mowers I currently a Husqvarna Model HUF625AWD and Model HU775BBC. Got these both as moving downsizing sales the AWD most recently is showing the engine as being a 2014 the owner bought it 2015. The RWD is showing on the engine being a 2013 model the owner bought it in 2014. Both very unique engines, self propelled, grass chutes and 22" blades.

I've found that the AWD is really a novelty and just adds more moving parts that collect debris and need maintenance. Rear drive is all that's needed.

I agree. FRD is suited for flat mowing with no obstacles, RWD better suited for sloping terrain, RWD with larger rear wheels slightly better for rural or very uneven surfaces.

We like the older model. Been in Hort trade 40 years+.and boyfriend also in Hort trade 40years. Now we each gave 7 acres places. His is a horticultural paradise. I have a football size lawn & also use mower to bag bad weeds in some areas. And i have a big sit down mower. WE Like the ability to stop mower & shut off blade & NOT the engine! And of course, We do like a throttle.I Bought a new Husks. Mower last year 2017 & you have to hold that engagement bar very very slightly or you are Running behind the mower as you cut grass! Thanks for video.

My Husqvarna HU 800AWDH has the Honda larger engine. This mower is miles better than the RWD Toro I had. I had multiple issues with the Toro including starting it. I also have a Honda Mower not self propelled. My home yard has hills & the Hus blazed right thru my yard. So glad I got rid of that Toro.

I don't prefer stuff I don't need but rather quiet powerful performance. Good cut quality, rear wheel drive, easy empty bag. I like to choke and throttle the engine my self. I don't need electric start and one handle adjust, just more weight and cost. Don't run ethanol and a fuel filter never hurts.

Those Husqvarna mowers are sweet man! As a matter fact, Husqvarna is making a name for themselves in general. It appears they are a step or two ahead of most other brands in general quality. I still think Honda may be the benchmark though. But, it's SO dadgum hard to tell what you are buying nowadays. Lots of mowers are mad by MTD with various brand names on them. Your RWD machine really sounded good too.

Hello Charlie thanks for viewing! Your right these Husqvarna's are really well made and heavy many of these brands are look alike just painted different colors as you see them in various home and department type stores. I like the Husqvarna and original Snapper mowers they are very just very unique. Great brand really like the RWD it has the last of the great Briggs and Stratton engines, the AWD is great on an incline it will keep a straight line cut.

I have the HU625AWD and as my first self-propelled mower it is fine if somewhat heavy to move about. I did wish the engine was more powerful; my lawn has quite a bit of weeds & thick grass which stalled the mower 2 times, but otherwise does the job. Given I only paid ~$225 for it brand new, I think it is a decent mower, but since it has a power-sapping AWD & its weight, I would go for the bigger engine variant.

Most mowers have throttles on them here in Australia, only thing stopped me getting a Husqvarna is the motor, I prefer the Subaru OHC motors, 11.2nm of torque for half the price of an equivalent B&S and quieter.

I bought a Husqvarna 675 AWD this year brand new at Lowes and I kept having trouble with the AWD drive jamming up. I kept the under carriage cleaned out as much as I could but it didn't seem to matter, it would get jammed with grass every time I would use it. It finally got to the point to where the AWD drive system didn't seem to have much power even though the under carriage was cleaned out. I looked around every gear pulley I could and didn't find anything jammed. Its kind of frustrating the front wheel drive gear cover is designed in such a way to where grass clippings get caught underneath the gear cover and the only way you can keep it cleaned out is to partly disassemble the front of lawn mower, take the wheels off just to get to the screws in order to take the drive over off to clean it out. In order to keep the front drive over free of grass clippings that could cause it to jam you would have to stop every few minutes to clean this thing out because that's all it takes is a few minutes of mowing for underneath the front drive cover to build up of grass. Needless to say I got so frustrated with this mower I just sold it. I bought the mower because I thought Husqvarna was a good brand. I am not sure if this year's models were made cheaper / poorer design or I just got a hold of a faulty one but either way Husqvarna left a bad taste in my mouth.

The RWD with the 775 series any day over the 625. While I don't think the 625 is bad, that 775 is so much better. I haven't found a 775 made after 2014, I think replaced it with the 725 with the "check & add/ never change the oil" feature. Have had both engines on Snappers and it's a pretty big difference. But a nice comparison and two nice mowers!

@mountainbikekayak 7 лет назад
Hello Ellis Mowers great hearing from you for sure you are the RU-vid expert on these newer engines! Really like both of these but this HU775 that engine just screams with Torque and so quite. Always still like a Throttle where you are in control and that blade engagement. For Briggs and Stratton to deliver a no oil change engine as advertised, they must burn super clean, I still would just have to change it at least once a year. Hope all is going well for you west of here finally warming up again!

mountainbikekayak honda has consistently come out by consumer reports as being best of the best year after year. I hear nothing but problems if you go orange. which is a shame because I really wanted one of these. still like it? any issues with the awd? I hear they go out all the time. how about the motor shaft? I might still get one and discredit the bad reviews I've seen.

MadMetalManiac74 I've owned two Husqvarna mowers in the past 5 years. Both have Honda engines and neither have had any issues. I would definitely recommend the Honda variants - lots of plastic in the newer Briggs and Stratton engines. Rear wheel drive seems to work better than front wheel drive, but either is nice if you're used to pushing

Run, don't walk away from Husqvarna mowers, especially the ones with AWD and Honda engines. They have major design flaws that will cost you a lot of money to repair. If you think Husqvarna + Honda = Quality you'd be WRONG! Here's why I think this way. In 2017 I bought the 22 inch deck with the 190cc Honda engine. I babied this mower more than any other that I've owned. When I say any other I only had one in the last 15 years before the Husqvarna. Last month this $450 mower basically self-destructed upon hitting a 3/4" diameter X 6" long stick. I am not lying about it. That was all it hit. Rear plastic shroud under deck broke in half ($15). That was what was supposed to protect the drive gearbox. Rear gear box ruined because the stick or drive engagement cable snapped off the connection arm that is molded into the lower gearbox. Without that arm you have no AWD therefore you have to buy a new gearbox ($70). That molded in connection arm is an incredibly stupid design flaw. After I replaced the shroud and gearbox I started the mower to see if everything worked. It did. Since I didn't know that it would for sure I didn't fill the gas tank lest I have to drain the gas and oil. I stopped the mower and topped off the tank. I tried to start it again at which point the mower kicked back so violently that the plastic starting tee/cord yanked out of my right hand and struck my left hand so hard it tore a gash in it. Once I bandaged that up I rolled the mower under the carport only to find that the blade had sheared the "spider" off the mounting hub and the blade was lying in the driveway. ( mounting hub $17) Now the dealer says that the problem is that either the flywheel pin sheared (I don't see evidence of that) or the timing belt has slipped or broke and the timing is off causing the valves to be opened or closed when they shouldn't be. And if that is the case the Honda engine may be ruined ($400+). I'm going to take the damn thing apart because I can't afford to pay the dealer to fix it. Neither can I afford to hear him tell me he'll give me $50 off on a new mower and he''use it for parts. I'd wind up in jail for trying to kill him. I'm going to go buy something else and write it off. A tough $500 dollar lesson that anyone considering these pieces of sh*t doesn't have to pay if they take my word.

Stop blaming others for your mistake. It's a lawn mower, not a branch or stick mower. This is an example of someone acting wreaklessly and then claiming there's a "design flaw".

Hitting any obstacle can damage any make/model of engine on any machine. It's operator error, trying to call it bad design and venting anger at a machine is the response of a child. I consider your entire comment to be yet another example of a miserable person trying to make everyone else miserable also. You caused the problem, you have nobody but yourself to blame for it. @mountainbikekayak 7 лет назад
Hello UreaSmith thanks for viewing you will really like the AWD model it does really great on an incline. It tracks really straight with all 4 wheels versus a rear wheel or front wheel drive. It is a really well built lawn mower noticed at our local Lowes the AWD Model HU725AWD is currently on sale for $319 versus $399 that is real great price!
@williambolhofer1630
@williambolhofer1630 7 лет назад
I recently acquired a HU625AWD and it looks to me like the rear shoot rods go into two holes in the side of the handle supports. The rods have some nibs on the end to keep them in the holes only so far and keep the shoot centered on the back opening. I originally did the exact same thing as you and put the rods in the same place as the grass catcher. However, putting the rod ends in the same spot as the grass catcher bag makes the shoot too high and it looked to me like it might even be dangerous as the shoot could possibly separate during operation if there was a rock or branch impact because there's not much really holding it down except gravity and some friction. Even with the shoot installed firmly in the side holes on the handle support, the thing is still awkward and I don't think I would ever use it with the shoot. I do really like the AWD on it because it pulls so much harder and stays straighter than FWD. I have some decent hills and FWD is next to useless. RWD is better, but still not as good as this AWD. I don't think the stock blade is all that great at mulching and I think I might replace it with an Oregon gator type blade.
@mountainbikekayak
@mountainbikekayak 7 лет назад
Hello William thanks for viewing you will really like that AWD particular on a incline it tracks really straight versus a RWD the FWD just slides. That back grass chute I agree with you it pretty much looks very odd and seems you would get grass clipping all over you, just use it for mulching. That's a great idea to swap that blade its pretty plain, a Gator type blade would do a better job and more noticeable on really high grass. You got yourself a really nice lawn mower got to love that Orange color!

Hey Cliff, guess what I'm picking up tomorrow for 20 bucks, that's right the one on the left, cause it a awd, but looks like the one on the right with the monster engine like my toro xp, mines going to be the hu 725awdhq.... Exi series, awd, guy says the engine is blown, but he says theres no hole in the block, doesn't really matter I have a 725 series briggs sitting around anyway with key start, so it's going to become a 725 with key start, will let you know if the engine is really blown or not, cause I bought a pristine toro timemaster for 150 cause the guy thought he blew the engine and it turned out to be a blown head gasket, so got my fingers crossed its something simple the neat feature of the hq exi is it has two drive controls, squeeze the one on the left and the front wheel drive engages, squeeze the one on the right and the rear wheel drive engages, squeeze both together and the awd engages, pretty cool.... Never had one b4.

It seems you're a huge Briggs engine fan. So be it. But guess what ?? It's basically a 1930's flathead engine modified with an OHV head and push-rods. That's it ! They're very cheap to build with tolerances so loose that machining can be done with a coarse file, crankshafts that are rarely if ever balanced, and a host of built-in reliability problems. But I don't mind, because I make a lot of money fixing those old crap engines. Just used a portion of the profits and paid cash for a new pickup truck. So keep buying Briggs engine products, I like making lots of money.

Hello Michael thanks very much that's the same engine that's on this AWD Husqvarna. Sounds like you got all the ingredients to make it run and that lawn boy must be only a few years old. Does it feel it has compression or make any attempt to even start at all for you even with just a little carburetor cleaner sprayed into it. Had a similar 550EX series that even with a small amount of gas in the tank it just would not start. Added gas and it started right up something with gravity or fuel flow at least on that particular one. It was fine as long as it was running and would dry the tank but for starting it had to have at least 1/4 tank of fuel in it.

@mountainbikekayak
@mountainbikekayak 6 лет назад
Hello Darrell thanks for viewing! These newer Briggs and Stratton engines were developed to address the emission standards. I have had a few that were fairly new with carburetor issues. They don't like to sit for any extended period of time which they just needed to be cleaned. If you can use non ethanol gas that would prevent some of the gumming issues that seem to occur with ethanol. Overall they have the same power as the previous generation, the plastic type design overtime will not develop any leak issues. If the Honda powered is all they have available then I would recommend that, the Honda engine will outlast the frame!
@Genecaster
@Genecaster 6 лет назад
I have not heard great things about the plastic carbs on the B.S. engines. Well, mixed rather. I just received a 2016 model Husky with the 725EXI engine and no equipped drive mechanism, only time will tell if the engine holds out. Had a bit of problems getting it running due to bad gas but cleaning out the carb seemed to fix that. Right now it runs well but haven't had a chance to run it for a whole yard or over the course of a few years. From what I was seeing, those EXI engines are on a LOT of mowers now. Huskys, TroyBilt, Yard Machines, even Toro uses them.
@philliplawerence5784
@philliplawerence5784 5 лет назад
In my repair experience, they're prone to failure within 2 years of usage, depending upon several factors, such as frequency of use, length of operation in each use, mowing environment (high growth, slight trim, etc), and to some extent, type and octane ratings of the fuel used and even oil level. And one characteristic that doesn't often appear in comments, is that Briggs engines tend to operate at much higher temperatures than other engines, and can be 70-90 degrees Fahrenheit higher than a comparable Honda GCV160 engine being operated in the same environment by the same operator. So the material itself isn't the only cause of premature failure, but high operating temperatures of the Briggs engines contribute to the premature failures.

I have the 625 and it has been disappointing. The motor is weak for any tall, thick or wet grass of any kind. It stalls even when going super slow. The design of the housing makes it to where the grass collects in the hole for the bag eventually backing up and stalling the motor. So I clear all the grass out of the bagging hole, start the mower, and within minutes I'm back to a full stall, and got to clear out the grass once more. The worst design ever! They should have added a plug to plug off the bagging hole, but instead its a grass catch while mulching causing frequent stalling.

@mountainbikekayak
@mountainbikekayak 6 лет назад
Hello Mike thanks for viewing! That indeed is a shame, not much would survive a concrete brick. The cost of a new replacement Briggs and Stratton engine would not be much difference in buying a new AWD mower. A mower that nice and probably fairly new one of those Predator engines sold at Harbor Freight and other places could be an option. They are around $120 seen holiday sales where they were $99 sometimes for the 5.5 HP 173cc engine. Not sure if they would have one with the shaft size and the key ways for the AWD pulley. That engine swap could also be a real pain to do but it could bring that pretty orange machine back to life again!

Actually, installing a Predator 173 in the Husqvarna in a slam-dunk. Same 3-bolt pattern, the 173 comes with 1 hole threaded, 2 holes about 5/16" through. You can elect to thread the 2 through-holes on the 173 (3/8-24 UNF), or simply put bolts through. The 173 needs a throttle lever, $10.00 at Lowes and others. The 173 has a 7/8" output shaft, MTD has 7/8" and 1" blade coupler w/pulley that works perfectly with either FWD, RWD, or AWD, but requires a 4-star blade vs the stock 5-star blade ($17.00 - $30,00 at Lowes and others). If you want to use the stock Husqvarna sintered-metal blade coupler and the stock blade, you may need a 7/8" - 1" sleeve ($5.00 eBay and others). (As a side note, because the stock sintered metal blade coupler has so little shear resistance, many of my customers elect for the MTD coupler changeover. But I leave it up to them.) I do these replacements for customers on all models, I stock all the parts, takes about 50 minutes - 2 hours, depending on customer wants like engine change only, or complete disassembly, cleaning and underside blasting then new powder coating, maybe drive wheels need replacement, etc. The notable weakness of the 173 (and many other engines including the Briggs) is using it on slopes, it can go into fuel leaning at angles 15 degrees and above. Slight slopes and flat terrain is works great, more power and far better reliability than any Briggs. My experience with the Predator 173 is that it's a very viable, reliable, and affordable replacement engine for almost any model of push mower, and am starting to see some mower manufacturers using them as the OEM engine.
