In this video, we continue building our shop cabinets by pre-finishing all the parts before assembly. I go over how to spray a finish using an HVLP gun, how to set up the spray gun for the proper flow of the finish, how to set up how much air to use in the spray gun, and how much to thin the finish.
How to set up an HVLP Spray Gun.
I used the Fuji MPX-30 in this video amzn.to/3HepFz4

So far I think you've got the most impressive finished projects of anyone on RU-vid. Absolute show piece furniture. I find it really inspiring.

It's about time some one does a step by step tutorial on thinning, gun setup, fan pattern and all the details of fine finishing. Such as using cone filters every time you fill up and exhaust. I've been transitioning from spraying cabinets and furniture with any piston spray pump to H.V.L.P compressor to H.V.L.P turbine to Kremlin 15c25 air-mix w/golden gun. Let me tell you. It was costly! I had to learn all of that the hard way and still learning. But still found your video informing and understandable. Nice job. Someone's going to really appreciate it.

Finally someone who understands the importance of viscosity for HVLPs.

Thanks for noticing. Years ago a RU-vidr made a finishing video without reading the instructions and then every RU-vidr there after copies his mistake. 😂

Wow. So much info. I will have to do a lot of rethinking my finish. And your costing me a lot of money. I'll have to throw my guns away and get better ones to your Specs LOL . Thanks Mate for a great video

I missed what gun you're using... Great tips for getting your gun setup correctly. Is the lacquer you're using a single part or is there a hardner?
@Benham_Design
@Benham_Design 2 года назад
I'm using a Fuji MPX-30 amzn.to/3HepFz4 It's a pretty solid gun for most wood finishes. Good point on the lacquer. Sherwin Williams has several types some do require a catalyst. The one I sprayed is a precat so no need for an additional hardener.

Thank you for this detailed video. I'm about to start a project where I'm also planning to finish the parts before I assemble them just like in your case. I'm also planning to use dados for my shelves. Do you make any adjustment to the grooves to accommodate the finished part additional thickness due to the finish applied?. I'm planning to use General Finishes Arm-r-seal for my shelves (which is very thin). Thanks.
@Benham_Design
@Benham_Design 2 года назад
Thanks!, I sand my parts to 150. Then cut the dados to fit that thickness. Then do a light sanding at 180 spray finish, and it all seems to work out and still fit. I imagine if you're too loose or too tight you would want to adjust your process on the next one.

Great video l, so you’re saying g orange peel is a sign of too much pressure?
@Benham_Design
@Benham_Design 7 месяцев назад
The main point was to help find your guns minimums and maximum air pressure and fluid. Once you find those and get use to seeing what it looks like, it makes it easier to adjust the gun from there. If it's sputtery pattern you will most likely need to add air. If it's a fine dusty pattern. Most likely it finish is starting to dry before it hits the surface so you probably have too much air. Adjusting the gun to get a perfect finish is about observing and adjusting based on what you see.

Hey Brian, Yep, there's a lot of moving parts to learning finishes and setting up a spray gun. People expect to get a great finish with a Harbor Freight gun. Not so much, buy a good gun first. Spendy but a Sata or Fuji will make ya happy! Great tutorial.

Very good information.. what brand of gun do you recommend? Do you apply sanding sealer before spraying the laquer? How many coats of laquer do you apply?
@Benham_Design
@Benham_Design Год назад
Fuji spray, typically I use a sanding sealer, and number of coats depends on the look I'm trying to achieve. Usually 2 or3

Some guns cone with a plastic cup and some with an aluminum cup. Any advantage either way? Can you leave the finish in your guns in between coats, and then clean out completely after all spraying is completed?
@Benham_Design
@Benham_Design Год назад
I prefer the plastic cups I can see through it to know how much finish I have left. Depends on the pot life of the finish you are using as to how long you can leave it in the gun. I typically flush the gun each time I refill the cup.

@@Benham_Design good points to know, thank you very much. I have this adapter that came with my gun and it’s to be used with some kind of aftermarket cup system. Do you know what that’s for or what cups are used with it? It only has threads to attach to the top of the gun then it’s just a smooth inner hole facing up. Thx
@Benham_Design
@Benham_Design Год назад
I'm not sure I can help you with this question. I've never seen that adapter. If the gun manufacturer has a support email or number, I'd give that a try.
