In this third episode, you will see how the staircase and wainscoting are painted using an HVLP paint sprayer. The spindles are primed and painted with the HVLP spray gun, then sanded, and the paint sprayed on. The staircase, including the newel posts, and wainscoting are painted in place.

Good job, you have to start somewhere and you only get better by doing it. Im new to woodworking, but have tons of experience spraying most with airless and some HVLP. Just got a shinny new 4 stage system and I have to say its nice to not have to worrry about the finish coming out great. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us, Scott. One thing you may wish to do would be to open the fan wider (I see it's set to spraying a small circle) and increasing the air and fluid volumes accordingly. That'll save you a lot of time as you'd be able to cover more area in each pass. As regards your staining technique, because you were using oak, there was really no need to rag on a wood conditioner, as oak isn't prone to blotching (maple and cherry are, incidentally). Keep using your spray equipment and your capabilities will continue improving with experience.

It is my understanding that one uses a filler when painting open grain woods. Presumably this would eliminate the need to paint and sand repetitively.

Nice video. What aircap set did you use here? 1.3mm? Thanks
@HomeImprovementWoodworking

Yes, correct. Though I later leaned a 1.8mm performs better with the specific paint I used.

I'm late to the party but I have a tip for you. The reason the grain popped was because of the water in the paint or primer. You did what is referred to as "raising the grain". Next time all the wood with shellac. Shellac is alcohol based and won't raise the grain as much, same with oil base.

Hi noway. I thought about putting zinsser b.i.n through my Apollo gun but I'm not sure how it will clean up, I know that it dries so quickly & pretty solid too. I take it you have sprayed shellac, how did you get on?
@ScottWalshWoodworking
@ScottWalshWoodworking 5 лет назад
@@justaman1721 I use Zinsser BIN too. I dilute and clean it with methyl hydrate (methanol). Works like a charm with zero grain raising.

Hi what type of paint do you use
@HomeImprovementWoodworking

For this project I used Benjamin Moore "Natura" paint. I've since learned that Benjamin Moore "Advance" is a better product for spray finishing. I hope that's helpful. Scott

Hi Ben. We just posted a video to demonstrate the effects of using different air cap sets (which include the needle) so you can see the impact of each one. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AGof3BywLvg.html Let me know if you have any questions.

do you have to thin the paint to spray or do you use special paint for hvlp spray machine

Yes, paint needs to be thinned. Here's a detailed video on how to mix paint for a paint sprayer ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iPdjoDGe1mk.html

How long were you having to let each coat dry before painting another coat? I'm getting ready to start my first spray paint job with the same Benjamin Moore latex paint you used.
@HomeImprovementWoodworking
@HomeImprovementWoodworking 6 лет назад
Derek Tedford I waited 1 1/2 to 2 hours between coats. It might dry faster in lower humidity, depending on where you live.

How did you remove the spindles?
@HomeImprovementWoodworking
@HomeImprovementWoodworking 4 года назад
The first step is to remove the handrail. Then they twisted out of the stair treads. It was pretty simple for my staircase. Are you having trouble removing some spindles? Scott

May I ask what materials you are spraying? Looks Awsome by the way. Just had a situation where we had to do the insides of built in cabinets. Bounceback is a major issue. We found that never attacking the corners dead on, and adding a retarder to the lacquer to help the hvlp from producing dry spray was a major help. My first major spraying job was a railing and what a learning experience that was. As someone still just in the beginning stages of spraying it's nice to see I'm not the only one who had those same issues. Everytime you spray you learn something, is absolutely correct. The trick is to apply all that knowledge in a few short passes with the gun. Oh and prep prep prep. Thanks for sharing!
@HomeImprovementWoodworking
@HomeImprovementWoodworking 6 лет назад
I used two types of paint. The spindles are painted with Benjamin Moore Advance and the staircase is sprayed with Benjamin Moore Natura. The Advance is what was recommended to me by a professional sprayer I learn from and I did some test pieces where you can see how well this paint levels out in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AGof3BywLvg.html Thanks for sharing your experience and comments

Why hvlp? Why not lvlp??!!
@HomeImprovementWoodworking
@HomeImprovementWoodworking 5 лет назад
I didn't research LVLP as I didn't want a spray gun that used a compressor. The Fuji HVLP uses a compact turbine, which works better in my small shop environment. Scott

Must be the slowest job in history. Have you finished it yet. Who the hell pits 8 coats of paint on.
@HomeImprovementWoodworking
@HomeImprovementWoodworking 6 лет назад
It's actually faster to paint with spray than by hand. The pros can do 8-12 coats of paint to build a quality finish. But you should also understand, the finish goes on thin so it dries much faster.
@jamestiltman8674
@jamestiltman8674 6 лет назад
Home Improvement Woodworking I do understand because I’m a decorator that uses an airless spray system. I would never do 12 coats. It’s ridiculous
@HomeImprovementWoodworking
@HomeImprovementWoodworking 6 лет назад
Ah, I understand your perspective now. Yes, 12 coats of paint with an airless spray system is ridiculous. HVLP paint sprayers put on a fine finish versus an airless spray gun is for a high volume of paint. These are two very different tools. Professional finishers (e.g., furniture finishers) use HVLP systems for the control and quality of finish.
@donbushek733
@donbushek733 Год назад
In most cases, you’re going to be applying paint to the manufacturer’s recommended thickness (using a wet mil gauge, if necessary) regardless of the equipment you’re using. An airless sprayer puts out a higher volume of paint, but that just means that you can move the wand faster or use a larger fan pattern and increase your production rate.
@jamestiltman8674

@@donbushek733 it’s just a staircase. This method must have taken ages. If he can find customers that want him in there house for ever then great. Just imagine getting him to paint the whole house.
