I thought there was something definitely weird about “sum to mono.” It had a bit more depth, but it seemed very artificial and thinned it the tone too much. Thanks for taking the time to share your experiment with us. 👍

Stereo summed to mono sounds LESS pronounced. I use a stereo setup (source audio stuff which has amazing auto-summing) because our church has a hybrid setup of a mono FOH but a stereo livestream. It all still seems to work fine but I definitely notice my wet fx getting buried more easily FOH. Thanks for doing specific videos like this! These are the kind of details I obsess about.

Most pedals that have problems with summing to mono are things like Vibro-pans (out of phase), panning tremolos (cancels the effect), and certain chorus effects that use phasing to enhance the effect (like the Boss DC-2). Sometimes delays will have a volume drop, like you saw in the demo. You just have to try them and see. My Digitech TR-7 does a Vibro-pan setting, and has a "phase" control. When running real stereo, I set it out of phase, and you get this amazing push-pull effect from the speakers that's hard to describe. But when I sum it to mono, I have to set it back in-phase, or it cancels parts of the sound. Basically, be inspired to try things and see how they sound!

Gotcha. I bet that Vibro-pan sounds good

As for medium-quality monitors, I like my KRKs.

I find that the Stereo summed to Mono has more soft texture to the sound. In the end, if your setup is mic'd, no one will hear the difference through the PA, but at home you'd definitely hear it. I prefer the Stereo summed to Mono, but it is much more "airy".

Here is my question, Can I have the "Headphones out" on the HX Stomp be Mono summed while it still outputs separately via the Left and Right Outputs? So I am running both guitar and vocals through the HX stomp, so guitar is on the Left channel and vocals are on the Right, and I want these separate for sending to FOH, but I want to still be able to use the headphones output, ideally without it putting guitar in one ear and vocals in the other.

This is really helpful! I just bought a stomp (with one of the reasons being to use it for dual amp sim paths in stereo) and can't wait to dive into this once it arrives. To my ears, Mono->Mono sounds clearer and feels like it will stand better in a mix. Stereo summed to mono sounds like it would end up getting buried. That said, on it's own, I feel like Stereo (even summed to mono) sounds much wider and bigger on it's own...so, for swells where the guitar may be carrying more of the sound, I think Stereo summed to Mono wins for me. For a normal song, mono seems like it would be better.

Yeah, I agree with that. Excited fo you to get your Stomp!

Can’t really tell much as there’s such an imbalance on the output. But I’d say stereo summer to mono.

Let say i have setup wired all stereo, and my patches all stereo too (yup the last in the fx blocks is Stereo), but let say on a live scenario i could only have my audio in mono (ex only one amp/xlr mono to PA), does my final tone will have issue/loss/doesnt sound like it should?

If i connect my hx stomp via usb cable, sounds mono, is it normal?

Summed mono is used in broadcasting for radios that only have one speaker that why listeing to the radio you dont hear the difference with stereo music on a mono radio the trasnmitters create a left +right summed stereo to mono for portable radios in mono can hear the stereo mix stereo encorders for broadcasting do this so stereo broadcasting can be hear on mono radios 📻

What do you meanh the hx stomp sums to mono automatically?

If you have all stereo effects but only come out the L/Mono output it will sum those stereo effects to Mono for you...instead of only hearing half of the stereo field.

Oh swEeet, cuz Im running bass into L/mono and guitar into R, But not using them simeltaneously, I switch presents and instruments for direct in live looping, Then I come out of L/mono for both, to save one preamp, I was wondering if I was losing sound quality and stereo effects this way, But it seems I'm only losing dB?

Too much of a difference... But I do like the depth of the sum to mono.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???????????????? OF COURSE THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN SOUND. SUMMING TO MONO FROM STEREO WHEN USING STEREO EFFECTS WILL ALWAYS HAVE SOME PHASE ISSUES. THIS IS NOT A REAL ISSUE. THIS IS AN ISSUE YOU ARE CREATING FOR CONTENT I WISH RU-vid WOULD QUIT DROPPING THIS CRAP INTO MY FEED.
