Crested geckos and chahoua geckos (chewies) are two of the best pet lizards you could possibly get, but what happens when you breed the two together? Is this even possible? Yes it is, and this hybrid gecko is the result. So, since this crazy hybrid gecko exists, is it the best pet lizard for you? Clint explains hybrids, the controversy about them, the pros and cons, and helps you decide if this is the right pet reptile for you.

It's okay to admit it, this video has you really excited about understanding genetics. Well, we have the perfect tool for you: ru-vid.com/group/PLgtE7_5uJ2p5llSHOmJ1TAgEgolGpyhXB These videos explain genetics using ball pythons as a model. Don't worry, it works the same way for everything that reproduces sexually. Enjoy!

Clint, this is my favorite video of yours to date. Partially because the lizard itself just seems so stinkin' rad, and partially because this video itself feels like a hybrid of two of your major video styles: the informative biology mini-lecture, and the 'five categories' pet ranking system. I don't know whether that was intentional, but using a new reptile to introduce a new genetics topic was pretty cool. Thank you!

Having a minotaur is like having an incredible muscular dude with the temperament of a frightened bull in your house. You should never enter its enclosure, it will attack you no doubt when entering its territory.
@trayas2272
@trayas2272 5 лет назад
Care requirements: several acres of labyrinth. You can’t buy that at Ecoterra so it’s going to be a custom build. Feed them a large sized human every couple of days, preferably gut loaded and dusted with calcium.
@Ditidos
@Ditidos 5 лет назад
Overall, we give the minotaur a score of half out of five. It really isn't the best pet hybrid for anyone. So unless you want to have an hiper-powerfull punching assasin which you can never see in a part of your garden we do not recommend them, and even then get a satire instead. They have similar care requirements and overall aesthetic but they are much more handeable and love to be seen unlike the minotaur.

One of the things that surprised me the most when I was getting into reptiles is how contrevertial hybrids are and how strongly most people are against it. Personally I think hybrids can be amazing as long as you choose what to mix mindfully and don’t just randomly toss two species together and see what’ll come from it. As long as it’s well thought through and there is a good valid reason for making that cross there shouldn’t be such a big problem, as long as the breeder is open and clear about what he bred and honest about what the exact cross is. The argument that it’s “unnatural” is a bit silly to me, since keeping animals in captivity in and of itself is the most unnatural thing about keeping reptiles no matter how well you try to simulate their natural habitat, so why is something being “unnatural” such a big problem to some people, that’s hard to understand for me xD Also could you do a video in viper gecko’s? I’m looking into getting them and would love to hear what you have to say about them! I love your videos, keep up the good work! 👍🏻
@TheLovelyMedusa
@TheLovelyMedusa 4 года назад
Sorry to reply to this 10 month old common, but the more valid reasons I've seen to not really intentionally make many of these tend to have to do with muddling the gene pool (Which I believe clint touches on) and also just difference in mating behavior. I'm not 100% but I was told that Chewies are a bit more rough than Cresteds when it comes to mating, so the experience could be very stressful for the Crested. That said, these hybrids are beautiful, and I think if done responsibly, they have a place in the hobby.

4:05 Ring species reminds me of dialect continuums. For example, if you ask someone from Amsterdam to speak Dutch and someone from Berlin to speak German, they're clearly different languages. But the closer you get to the border, the more Dutch resembles German and German resembles Dutch. If you travelled from Amsterdam to Berlin, stopping in every little village along the way, you'd be hard-pressed to define exactly when the locals stopped speaking Dutch and started speaking German.

I love Genetics. It’s so interesting. Additionally as far as speciation goes it’s incredibly interesting to hear the debates of scientists on what constitutes a species and whether hybridization indicated that they are not truly separate species. Certain researchers have studied hybrid bird migrations and found that hybrids migrate in a middle path to that of their parents. Crazy interesting concept and incredibly confusing.

My main issue with hybrids is about care requirements. For something like a crested and chewie, I’m not as worried. But seen crosses of species within the blue tongue population that worry me when it comes to humidity requirements. Would I love the coloring of a halmahera with the build of a northern? Of course. But the humidity requirements are 60% difference! I think if we are able to know the care requirements with a huge degree of certainty. I also do get worried about the adults hurting each other

I have a suggestion for future videos. I'm currently looking for suggestions on reptiles to keep in small spaces. Like something you could keep even if you live in a tiny home or an RV or a studio apartment. Many reptiles get big enough as adults that when you're limited on space you have to think alot about anything that comes into your space. It would be cool for me and others in similar situations to me. Keep up the great work on the videos you are making! They come out great because your enthusiasm is so contagious!
@HidekiShinichi

a lot of animals can be housed in plastic bins like the ones from ikea. People keep a lot of snakes in them under their bed and it works well. Think crearively, how can you provide space and environment required for given specie while keeping cost low, you dont have to make enclosures that are fancy, and since those enclosures will not be fancy you can stick them in lots of spaces, like under a bed or in a (properly ventilated and lit and all) wardrobe etc.

I personally LOVE hybrids. Look at... basically any dog breed - they're all hybrids of one another. As reptiles become more and more common and people are becoming more sensitised to both the health of their breeds (such as the spider) and the all encompassing WANT of novelty, we are going to get more and more Anhybrids (sp) over greater and greater distances (Py-Boa?)

This is awesome!!! I love this channel. I’m really curious about smaller python species, like anthill pythons and stuff, have you done anything on that? This channel is pretty much my go-to resource! It’s so unfair, the reputation reptiles and especially snakes tend to have. They tend to scare people, and because they scare us, we humans call them demonic and evil. It is so important to have channels like this exposing their true nature. Reptiles are amazing creatures, and, from a religious standpoint, another variety of God’s creatures, to be respected and admired; I don’t believe such amazing animals could have been created with anything other than love. :)

That is one that definitely comes with some significant risk to breed.

New Caledonian Griffin would have been such a cool name. Not every single new word ever coined has to be a portmanteau, it drives me nuts.

The whole deluding bloodlines thing can be fixed with some patience and getting ahold of another hybrid capable of breeding
