Hybrid mobile saddle hunting system: One stick and rappel with hang on. Best of both worlds!!

In this video I talk about my system I switched to late season. I'm using the one stick technique and rappelling down but also using a lightweight hang on stand. I also eliminated my pack entirely by using my turkey vest.
I liked saddle hunting but found myself moving too much and it cost me two deer this past season and something had to change. I really loved the one stick technique and rappelling down and didn't want to give that up. But I knew I could sit more still in a hang on stand.
I explain my system the first part of the video then I go to the tree and show you my complete way I ascend, hunt, and descend the tree. It's a deep dive into how I've combined different techniques into what works for me. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments.
The name of my friends book I talked about in the video is called, "My stories -Gods truths, Modern day parables that point to Christ" by Philip Byers. You can find on Amazon.

I have the jx3 hybrid pretty much does this but with you facing the tree. But i wanted to 1 stick originally. Too hard to use and 1 stick up so now i am considering purchasing an inexpensive saddle to 1 stick up and use the jx3 to hunt out of because its so comfortable. This confirms that im not the only 1 who puts comfort as a must when hunting. And that is my plan going forward. I would encourage you to take a look at the jx3. Thanks for the video!

I've heard really good things about the jx3. Maybe in the future I'll try it. But for now I'm pretty content with this system. I have switched to the xop cold world hang on stand and then I just run the xop X2 stick for one sticking. So total weight is down to 15 lb. Thanks for watching

Thanks for watching and subscribing! I really like this system and am using the cold World hang on and one x2 stick. Total weight is only 15 lbs. I'm able to go 30 plus feet if needed. Ots great 👍. I'll be doing another video here in the off-season with my current set up but it's essentially the same as this video. Just lighter hang on and stick

That is the cool thing about saddle hunting, you can make it your own. Thanks for the demo, Tom! ...you know I'm going to have to say something about you not being tied in when you leave the ground. Lol

Your exactly right. You can really adjust things to make it your own for sure. And your right, I should have tied in at ground level. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!

At time of this video it was my second season doing this. And it truely is the best of both worlds. My first year was with the m7 micro lite. But didnt like that it had no leveling capabilities. My second season was with novix helo. It was ok. Now i use lwcg 1.0. Its best so far. I replaced my saddle with the tactisasddle harness though. And i replaced my quicklink/ notch quickie with a running bowline. Imo the running bowline is way to go and get rid of metal components to girth around the tree. Glad to see this is catching on after suggesting it on fb and other youtube videos.

I really like this system as well and am planning on sticking with it. I'm now using the xop cold world stand which has five adjustments for leveling the platform. I'll have to look into the running bowline. I've heard of it but can't picture it right now. I'll have to look that up. With a bigger platform I find myself more comfortable and able to do all day sits easily. Love the rappelling down afterwards as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts

Thanks for watching! I'm running the XOP cold World now and one X2 stick. With rappel stuff I'm at 15-16 lbs. Not bad

Luv the video!!! I have cut my weight down so much that it’s super nice goin from 35lbs in my summit setup for huntin the way I do to about 12-15lbs with my saddle or hybrid setup with a WindWalker loc-on. I find the hybrid setup my most comfortable system and wish I had chance to try stuff out before diving into saddle game. Think I would have gone with some sort of minimalist saddle and a LWCG .5 with a set of sticks and one setup for one sticking if I had to do it again. I’m about $1000 in but figuring out my preferred system now much like you did. Again great video!!!

Thanks for watching! I kind of learned by trial and error. So now this season I have the xop cold world hang on which I'll be doing a review on soon here. It's only 7 1/2 lb I'm also using one of their X2 sticks which is a pound and a half with a two-step eater probably going to continue to one stick and repel just because I'm used to it now and like it. So my stand my one stick with the aider, and my bag with my 40-ft repel rope and belay device total 15 pounds. My turkey vest will keep all my essentials so I'm able to eliminate a backpack all together.

This is great! Using both methods to accommodate you style. To me, hunting is all about what makes you feel comfortable and confident and safe. I'm pretty convinced my system isn't for everyone but I like it. You have the best of both worlds. Very cool! You get the beast stand and then a lighter stick you can knock off 5-7lbs.. just sayin😁 I appreciate you reading an excerpt from my book! Hopefully, it's a blessing to all the readers whoever they may be!! Thanks again! And cool video!!

Thanks for watching. There definitely are lighter stands now and I could save weight on my stick also. I'm excited about the new style and I really enjoyed it those two late season hunts I did. I enjoyed your book very much and thanks for letting me read part of it! Thanks for your support Philip!

Agree with saddle requiring movement at times. I'm looking for a system like this. What size quick link is that? I have one that's around 5.5 oz, likely too heavy. Thank you for the video, very informative.

I took a picture of the numbers on it. What's your email and I'll send it to you. Not sure exactly what size it is but it's not that heavy and stays on the tree nicely. Thanks for watching

If you will get rid of that platform and swing off to the side a little to move stick i belive ot might help you. How i do it. But an old muddy pro stick with a cam cleat converted to a one stick with ewo stwps and stand offs is amazing. Then you could have a stick thays lighter and more user friendly with your stand and one to run with the saddle. Just my opinion though.

I have switched to the xop cold world hang on stand which is only 7 and 1/2 lb. And I've also switched to using one xop X2 stick which is a pound and a half. So total weight is down to 15 lb. I have tried swinging to the side and that works good as well! Thanks for watching

How do you feel sitting like normal in the hang on with the tether tied on from the front and going up and over yourself? Do you keep the tether height high like saddle hunting or lowered?
@ontargetadventures4940
@ontargetadventures4940 Год назад
Great question. That's something I've been experimenting with. So I always keep my tether rope the same height as when I'm leaning in the saddle (chin height when I'm standing tall). Then I just make small adjustments with my belay device (gri gri+) depending if I'm sitting or standing on my platform. So if I want to sit like in the traditional hang on I let some line out with my belay device so my tether is over My shoulder snug but comfortable. Then if I want to stand back up on my platform I just slide rope through my belay device to take up slack. But I like to keep my tether height always the same. Because it's way faster and easier to take up slack or let out slack using the gri gri plus versus adjusting your tether up and down the tree. The main thing is to eliminate slack in your system as much as you can. Hope that helps you. Thanks for watching

@@ontargetadventures4940 I have been one sticking, but also have a hang on setup. I've been thinking about trying one sticking and using the hang on stand, that's how I found your video.

@@calvinworrell139With the weight of hang ons now getting lighter I thought I'd give this hybrid system a try. I enjoy the rappelling and one Sticking. Didn't want to give that up. But I can sit still better in a hang on. Try it out if you decide to go with it so you can get comfortable with your tether height etc

@@calvinworrell139I just got the cold World by XOP and will be using one X2 stick to one stick.
