HYBRID OR LONG IRON SURPRISING RESULTS

Hybrid or long iron in your golf bag is today’s question. Long iron and hybrid/ rescue golf clubs has been a choice golfers have been making for years now and today Mark golf equipment test might shed some light on which one to choose. Long irons tend to launch lower and keep a flatter ball fight where hybrids will tend to launch higher and go higher or at least that is what we think. Even the ideas of when and how to make a good hybrid swing or even a long iron golf swing might be challenged in this golf video. How to hit a long iron is a common question in golf lessons but understanding what happens to a long iron or hybrid in flight will influence that answer.
If you enjoy this golf equipment review or have other hybrid and long iron questions hit me up in the comments section below and I will try to answer.

the big criticism of hybrids is the massive snap hook from nowhere or a sudden flier, id rather the drop off at 158 because is can see the trouble short, Dont know whats 50 yards left or through the back.
@Matthew-of9sp
@Matthew-of9sp 5 лет назад
Completely agree. If I miss hit the ball I would rather be short. The front edge of the green is usually better than the over the back of the green. Hybrids are good imo if you’re chunking the long irons. If you can hit them both solid, you will fight hooks and pushes with a hybrid whereas with a long iron you’ll fight being short with the less than great swings. Short is usually better than hooked or pushed with FULL distance. jmho

IMO this notion of clubs having "fliers" is one of the biggest myths in golf...

Thanks! The point about how and where you actually hit your hybrid on the club face was excellent! A number of profession golfers avoid the hybrids due to many models are biased to a draw. However, in the last several years, some hybrid manufacturers have corrected this bias for these pros. I would love for you to cover this aspect of getting fit with hybrids!

I've been golfing for 20 years. Had scholarship and played in college. My handicap right now is +5. Always been a good ball striker and swing driver 125mph. When I first started golfing I was taught the 24/38 rule. Basically the average amateur golfers start seeing issues with irons less than 24 loft and longer than 38". I never had issues hitting 3-4 irons but years ago i went with a 23 hybrid built to the same length as the 4 iron is was replacing. Best decision I ever made. Much Easier to elevate. And also super easy for me to flight it down. I've made so many eagles because I can hit a nice high straight ball even on a mis hit.

Lower launch could help in some on course situations just like the higher does. Important to decide what you value, and what shots you need the help on.
@cwugrad396
@cwugrad396 5 лет назад
What if you are in the trees, 190-200 out, with branches and leaves etc ahead - the higher launch would not help since you want to keep it lower. That scenario is pretty common in my neck of the woods
@user-xr3ry9wu4y
@user-xr3ry9wu4y 5 лет назад
From personal experience, when you're in that scenario quite often you'll rarely hit that shot and might as well chip out.

Perhaps de-loft the hybrid with your hands / shaft forward as an option? Essentially you could play a strong bump and run.
@cwugrad396
@cwugrad396 5 лет назад
Kieron Ragoo I have tried doing that but end up duffing it a lot when I try and keep it low. I do bounce between long irons and hybrids depending on the course

Elias E for me it’s a lot easier to play those punch shots with the iron and I do get a bit greedy and tend to go for it when I probably should be chipping out

Hi Mark I’ve recently replaced my TM M2 4, 5, and 6 irons with TM M6 23 deg, 25 deg and 28 deg hybrids. The improvement in my ball striking has been amazing. Might even replace my 7 iron down the track. For seniors with slow swing speeds, the hybrids are no brainers. Should have got them sooner. Cheers Ben Sydney Australia

23 degree hybrid on a links course with wind is either coming back to you or going in the direction of the wind (unless you pure it), 4 iron just goes through the wind so much better (for me). As for those lies by the OOB posts, wedge it to somewhere sensible then hit a proper shot!
@kylehansen15
@kylehansen15 5 лет назад
I go down to 5 iron at 25 degrees then I have a 20 degree hybrid that I play as my 3/4 iron. I then go into a 2 iron for the lower ball flight option and fairway finder off the tee. Gives me all the options I need!
@adamgoertzen9345
@adamgoertzen9345 5 лет назад
I do the same thing but a 22 cobra hybrid. You get the best shot making/ trouble saving combo that way. Sometimes you need the height of the hybrid and the help out of funky lies to get ball back in play. Then with the 2 iron Utility club you can get the slow punchy fairway finders but also be able to keep one under a tree limb running shot.
@golfinguru11
@golfinguru11 5 лет назад
Hybrid will have the higher launch and steeper descent I’d assume. Although you’re playing a super game improvement club with a very low and deep COG so it won’t be much different. I play a 20 degree hybrid but like the ability to play the ball low with a 4 iron.
@kourt2469

Try hitting a punch shot with your hybrid. Choke up, ball back in stance, swing 80%. I personally find it easier to hit a low stinger with a hybrid than an equal loft 4 iron. Takes a couple minutes practice on the range but it's quite easy.

I would really like to use my hybrid . . . but for some crazy reason I rarely get a clean strike. But I can almost always get good contact with my 3 and 4 irons! I guess it is the way I'm swinging . . . but very frustrating!!

Great Illustration Mark, 😀 The lower trajectory of my 4 and 5 irons prevented me from holding greens last season. Especially when hitting into a long par 3. I just don’t have the swing speed to get a long iron up in the air. I removed the 4 and 5 iron from my bag and added a 22 degree H4 and a 25 degree H5. I also removed the 5 wood and added a 19 degree H3 for gapping. All with same shaft and club head characteristics. Love those hybrids!

My bag is a 10 degree driver 16.5\ 4 wood, 20-3 hy, 24-4 hy, 5-pw, gw,sw, 60 all clubs are basically 4 degrees apart starting at my 4wood because my 5 iron is 28 degrees. It works and the spacing is on point. Enjoyed the vid and the other one about loft up or loft down on your hybrid. I have one of each driving iron / 3 Hy lofted up and 24 is lofted down. 816 H1 for both.

Had this debate with myself over the last month, and took the 22 hybrid out of the bag and replaced it with my 4 iron. Accepted 4 iron less forgiving, but in the recent weather / wind was faced with a number of shots of that length into the prevailing wind, so felt the iron ‘punched’ better through the wind. Will swap them back once the ground softens as we approach winter.

Neither of those for me. I use a 7 wood with a shorter steel shaft which I can hit anywhere from 170-200 yards. I then start my irons at a 6 iron.

And I'm definitely hybrid > long iron. But that's because I hit them better overall. Equivalent descent angle doesn't really become a factor off a thin bullet. 🙂

Absolutely the test I’d need to do. I have a 20 degree hybrid and an 18 degree utility iron. Generally I hit the utility more consistently (I just hit irons well, it’s the rest of my game that’s the problem) so at the moment the 18 degree utility wins.

I carry both 4 hybrid and 4 iron. I feel my hybrid is perfect out of rough lies, I can pop it up and shots into greens. My iron is perfect for tee shots, fairway finder and playing it off the fair way. I also find I can fade my 4 iron and draw my hybrid lol

I game both a 4 iron and a 23 degree hybrid (22,25 degree loft). I see the difference in launch and use it to my advantage. Love the hybrid, more versatile in shots, low, high and all that. 4 iron is a lovely tool in wind and easier to fade and draw where the hybrid is a draw only club :)

Feel like having 58 52 pw wedges means you can have full irons up to 3i plus a 21° hybrid, gives a crossover in t mb 3 iron and hybrid, but used for different shots, so a good solution

I always played long irons,2,3,4 and I always thought I had a advantage of straiter shots and more fairways. Recently I purchased a hybrid and the big advantage for me is a more consistent shot on off center hits! I don't think it has helped my score, but the ease of the hybrid may improve my mental anguish of a mis-hit long irons! I may add more hybrids 😁

For me I never thought about how quick they stopped. Just the hybrid was easier to hit. I have a 2 3 and 4 hybrid. Play off 7-8 (fluctuate between the 2). Very occasionally puts 2iron in the bag in summer as I cam strike it and love how much it runs.

Lovely part about this game is everyone's a bit different. I just replaced 818 hybrids with 3 and 4 620cb and it's made my game so much better. Could be the particular hybrid more than a hybrid in general but happy I figured it out! Great vid!

I carry a 20* 3 hybrid and a 23* 4 iron. The hybrid is good for the "get out of jail" shots that I want a little run after, and it gaps nicely between my longest iron and my 3 wood. The 4 iron is great when you need some distance but need to control the run. More of a situational club, sure, but it beats trying to feel shot a hybrid or absolutely pound a 5 iron.

This is such a perfect video to me. Occassionally when I'm in the woods I think to myself "Man, I really wish I had an iron with less loft than my 5 iron (28 degrees) so that I could more easily punch out." I have a hybrid with 25 degrees of loft to replace a 4 iron distance in my bag. I'm not in that punch out situation often enough to justify putting a 4 iron back in my bag though, so like you, my hybrid will be staying.

I use a 3 hybrid and a 4 chunky iron. I can lift both pretty well but knock down the 4 better. I can fade the 3 better but hook the 4-iron as much as a shot can warrant. I use them for different scenarios. I can also deloft the 4 iron and punch it into the wind off the tee. Like Mark is saying, it's got a lot more to do with how you use this type of club in the 3-4 scenarios per round than just banging it out in a studio or at a range.

I play my hybrid at 21* because my 5 iron is at 24*. It’s a fairway finder for a specific yardage and stops with in a few yards on a green. Love it when I look down at it, it’s money!

I game a 3 iron and 17° #2 hybrid. I use 3 iron more as I can get loads of roll out of it, feel I strike it better off the deck and can keep it low when windy. Hybrid is handy when I want to pop the ball out of light rough but don't use it as much.

This is serious food for thought for me. I have a 4 and even 3 iron Nike VR Pro Combo, and then a Covert 2 Hybrid which I usually reach for most of the time but it's a little long sometimes. I could easily drop both the irons and put in a 4 hybrid perhaps seeing this and it would not only make my shot selection easier but likely better results and still keep reasonable gapping! Thank you for the consistently great content Mark!

I traded in my 17* p790udi for a 17* g400 2 hybrid because I miss hit the UDI too often, even to the point where I shyed away from using it completely. My confidence with the hybrid is 10 fold and it's now my go to off-the-tee club and I've gained distance because there's no fear of the miss hit.

I tested this over this golfing season. I was not that interested in the fairway shots. I tested it from the usual rough lies I ran into. I am a hybrid guy and have a 22 degree hybrid that is one of my trusties. I usually hit irons out of the rough or tired to. I found hybrid was easier for me on average to get up and out of the rough. I am a sweeper. Hybrid for me. Great video. I would love to see the difference in a cross over style club in similar lies. I would imagine it would land in the middle of those two.

Mark I agree with you on most things, but at least for my personal game I think i have more shots where I need to keep it lower under trees than have a need to lift it over a hill quickly. I would also think when controlling it in the wind it would be easier having a slightly lower flight while keeping the ability to stop the ball on the green. Does this make since?

Interesting video. I've played many combinations, and for a while I used 19* and 25* hybrids then 5 iron, my issue was I play an open windy Linksys course and into wind I found the 25* hybrid was about my 6 iron length from the height. It was interesting that you took swings from behind a berm to demonstrate the value of a high launch. I can't remember ever hitting from a similar position since such obstacles are rare in America. What I do (a lot) is hit from under and around trees. Let's see how valuable that hybrid launch angle is when your ball smacks into a branch while the iron shot cruises safely underneath it! It also matters a lot whether you often play in calm or windy conditions. Horses for courses.

Great vid. What's your view on having a low lofted club in the bag to get out from under trees? I carry two hydrids 3/4 but find if I try to manipulate loft to keep them down I end up pulling. Used to find a 3/4 iron much easier to manipulate from trouble. Toying with the idea of dropping a wedge and getting some form of lumpy to help - out of trouble/stinger option (suppose the answer is not to hit it in the trees in the first place!). Would be interesting to see a vid on extra wedge versus long iron/stinger pros and cons.
@atomant830
@atomant830 5 лет назад
I like the comparison but, the loft on the T300 4i is 20 degrees which probably had more of an effect on that lower launch than the iron design when compared to a 23 degree hybrid design.
@francoisdesmoulins-lebeaul4273
Very different for me... I can manipulate the launch conditions of my 4i, I struggle to do it with a hybrid... In front of the bank, I'd go 4i every day, ball below feet as well (I over-compensate and tend to over-draw those shots and hybrids tend to be "drawy" as well). The thing seems to be that since you're used to your hybrid so much, rinky-dinks and all that jazz, you feel confident and manipulate it to get the trajectory that suits the situation. I have the same "love" relation with my 4i, so it's much the opposite. Hybrids are "uni-dimensional" for me: high draws and that's it, and then I thin and fat them more than irons so I get some involuntary stingers to complement the high bomb-ball.

You also have to consider are you gaming for a tee or fairway / rescue club... both can be used in both instances, but where do you need the help more? Wouldn't you agree that for most, the hybrid or a high lifted fw will do more for their game, at the 23 / 21 / 19 end of the bag

@Mark I think for most UK courses and for most amateur golfers there is a much different option that would help alot more with club selection. The discussion is always long iron v hybrid, I understand why when its loft based etc, what about performance of your golf bag in relation to courses people play. I play at a decent level off 2, I have a long iron and 2 hybrids, I however dont have any woods, all the courses I play are not the longest, granted I hit the ball a good distance but whats the point in a 3 or 4 wood? I play a 17* hybrid and a 21.5* hybrid and also have long irons mainly there for stingers off short par 4's in wind. How often do you muppets even use your woods and you play much longer courses than most of us. Would love to hear your thoughts on it.

I think one important thing left out is for the guy with slower swing speed. I cannot get a 4 iron off the ground from any lie. With hybrid I can get the ball up in the air. The four iron maybe three ft off the ground and not over 150 yds. With hybrid or fairway wood I can get it up and get distance.

This is probably just a personal thing, I’m much straighter with a 4 iron. My hybrid is a lot easier to lose left. For a 200 yard tee shot which punishes an offline hit is the iron all day long. Same for a fairway shot into a green with no trouble in front.
@joemarks3719
@joemarks3719 4 года назад
Both have their pro's and cons. The hybrid does launch higher and is more forgiving, but is easy to "over draw" if your normal shot shape is a draw. Those shots you hit from the terrible position from the left rough with the ball below your feet I would never attempt to hit either a 4 iron or a hybrid from 200 yds. A simple punch shot to the center of the fairway going 70-80 yards will leave me a PW/AW to the middle of the green, eliminating the possibility of a double bogey or worse. The distance control in the wind is much more reliable from a 4 iron as well, and while the hybrid is easier from the rough, you can get the knuckleball that goes 30 yards farther than you want. If you struggle to get long irons airborne, the hybrid is a no brainer. If you generally hit your 3/4 iron well, try a hybrid for 10 rounds and keep track of your results from 200 yds. with it and find which one works better for you.

Because my irons are limited at the top to a 5-iron, I have no choice but to hit hybrids above it. Thus, I play a Ping G410 3 hybrid and 4 hybrid, plus my TM Original mini driver.

I'm going to get fit for a potential 21 - 23 degree hybrid. Currently have upto 5 iron and then 19 degree hybrid in my set but feel the gap is to large, but we will see.

I like this video, but no mention of a faster clubhead speed with the longer hybrid shaft compared to the 4 iron shaft. Is that another part of why hybrids work better ? I actually look out my 5 iron out of my bag and now have a 6 iron and hybrid 25° which I playing for the first time in the morning.

I game a 4 iron over hybrid because I like that I can play it low and I have trouble flighting a hybrid low. If a lie is that bad then I'd be moving up to a 5 or 6 iron anyway and still not gaming a hybrid for that shot. I go to hybrid at the 3 and it's been fantastic because while I love hitting my 4 iron I absolutely hated 3 irons. 4 iron is really just a preference and If I was forced to game a 4 hybrid instead I'd be fine with it and could totally make it work.

Not a bit surprised the iron stops quicker, but the playability of the hybrid from poorer lies makes it the choice all day long, but that's me, a 12 handicapper, maybe a better ball striker would prefer the iron

i couldn't agree more with the comment at 11.00. The only time I regret hitting a hybrid is when I strike it 'perfect' and it just balloons into the air. Don't get me wrong i'm not a striker so it saves more than it hurts. Hybrid all the way for me.

Interested in your thoughts of where the hybrid vs iron really makes a difference. I recently added a 5hy simply because I was playing around with my wife's. I had never even considered it before so now I literally go T200 straight to hybrid.

Another factor influencing how fast the ball will stop is how fast it is coming into the green and how deeply it digs into the green. Depending on green conditions, the higher flying hybrid may impact the green with a higher speed (because it's coming in from a higher overall height) and might dig in deeper, resulting in a shorter stopping distance, overall.

I dropped my hybrids for 5 and 7 wood. Just seem to strike them more consistently. I do miss. The hybrids for putting as the woods are slightly longer shafts.

I'd say hybrid is steeper into green over my 4 iron but generally I hit my 4 iron better (quality of strike I'm talking about not what the ball does if I hit them both equally well) If I hit my hybrid better consistently it would probably become my go to. I think I may have just inadvertently scheduled myself a range lesson w my hybrid haha

Anything longer than a 5 iron from iffy lies is a wager for me. If one cannot hit the ball first and clean then a suboptimal or (more often) a bad shot is near certainty.

You say why would you give up the extra launch but if you're into the wind it's going to be easier to keep the 4 iron low. I hit the ball high anyway so I don't want it going any higher.

I'm that guy who struggles to control hybrids at times.Into a head wind I know its spinning up and going no where but I still wouldn't give up the extra forgiveness it gives me

If you’re playing links courses or on a windy day would the 4 iron be a wiser choice?

Nah. It just grazed a bade of grass as it sailed over the top of the mound. The disturbance at the bottom was the club head hitting a fern.

Cleveland Launcher Halo Hybrid, for rough, might be out of bounds, up in the air, and easier to hit than my irons.

I think it would have been worth exploring the benefits the iron brings in being able to launch lower. Surely those scenarios are just as important as the ones where you need to launch it higher? Being able to recover from trees and move the ball further forward by going under trees (strokes gained and all that) would be equally as important. Not that what you said was wrong - but that part of the equation i think needs to be addressed as well.

Defo a compromise but much easier to launch a club lower than higher for many. Ball back and defloft is a common skill remember. 👍👍

I can play traditional irons and even blades but....Hybrids are a lot easier to hit...i play 4-9 hybrids and SM wedges 48, 52, 54, 58 & 62. TS2 driver, 3w & 7w. They all gap nicely together.

I strike the ball pretty damn pure with my 3 iron and my swing speed allows me to use the long irons efficiently. The hybrid for me is too one dimensional. Shaping the ball is more difficult and I hit my target with less frequency.
