I can hit long irons no problem, even play a 1 iron on some links courses but less & less, still practice with them though and prefer to go to 5 iron then to a 22 deg hybrid and then 18 deg hybrid replacing 5 wood!
Hated hybrids since they came out. Tried one a few weeks ago and bought it (cobra flyz 19deg ). Fills the distance gap on par 5s , way more accurate than my 3 iron. Cheers.
I used to go down to a 4 iron with a 3 driving iron thing. I've got rid of those now so only go down to a 5 iron and I'm looking at testing some hybrids over the next few months. I never used to like hybrids but your videos and opinions on them have shown me the light.
If coach is say 5 ft 8, then 9 ft (3 yards) is like coach standing on his own shoulders (ok, a touch less) but I think you would see that difference in a ball flight as what you are seeing would be highlighted by any trees or hills etc on the skyline. I'm not sure you'd see a 3 or 4 ft difference though.
Longest iron, 5. My best club used to be my 3 iron when I was 20/30 years old. Now I’m 50. I recommend once you start slicing your long irons, switch to hybrids. My 3 and 5 woods work great but to fill in for my 3 and 4 iron, I got a 5 hybrid. Loose the long iron ego and improve your game with a hybrid or two. HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!
I'm a hybrid convert - have a 4 & 5 in the bag and swap out by 5 iron with one of my 4 wedges depending on course/conditions - with driver, 3 & 5 woods in there too it's a busy bag of sticks - but generally works well and covers all the gaps right through the bag!
Interesting that the hybrid was 5 yards compared to the 5 iron of 12 yards offline ! The dispersion should also be take into account.. I’m a lot more accurate with a 5 iron than a hybrid , so it goes to show that we are all so very different. Could of course carry both if there was room in the bag .😉🏌️⛳️🍻
I used to feel that I always would only be able to ever hook hybrids and should just stick to long irons; I was drawing on a careery I'd hit with a friend's 5 iron...After ONE SHOT that I NEEDED to pop it high and stop it with a 6 hybrid, my confidence with them soars and they're now my favorite club! Don't give up if you're struggling to see the shot because of the shape of the club at first peoples; stay with them and work on your strike, you'll eventually start seeing all the great things they can do for you and hit shots that will instill confidence in them, then you can start shaping them and low bulleting them; I love my hybrids now!
I'd like to see you do a video analysing where Matt generates his speed from. Admits himself he isn't working in the gym but yet can generate phenomenal speed. Why is he up to 12mph faster than you with his driver. Maybe link this in with "shaft loading" buzz word ideas and misconceptions around "lag" etc. Thanks bruh
I use a 22' hybrid instead of a 4 iron.... But use a 2 iron instead of 5 wood... I play with a slight draw, so find that the 2 iron helps with cut spin shots when needed...
That is my problem now! I've played all irons for as long as I've played the game. However, I recently bought a used set of clubs that included TaylorMade hybrids, and I was impressed at how far the hybrids where going compared to the low irons. I still feel more accurate with the irons though, and that is the dilemma.
Hi Mark I always feel confident up to 7 iron. 6 iron has to be a mental barrier which I’m working on. Just switched to Ping blueprint and I’m really enjoying the feel ! I’ll add the 6 soon as I can afford it lol. ! Love the content you guys give us
I am not surprised that both the iron and hybrid go the same distance with your swing speed and contact. I think if you tried this with a less skillful player the hybrid would go farther and much higher. I play a 3,4, & 5 hybrid and am thinking about adding a 6 hybrid. They are much more player friendly and work better off of many more lie conditions. Very interesting comparison.
For me, the answer is simple. Hit your irons PW, 9I, 8I, 7I... At some point, there will be an iron you aren´t comfortable with hitting (difficult) shots (e.g. too low/only low, over water, etc.). Often you see it because those irons(s) have far less signs of use than the others. Replace it with a hybrid. Same with the hybrids. Most people can´t hit a 16°. Replace those with fairways and end up with the lowest lof you are comfortable with.
I have a 3/17 hybrid, but given a choice, I'd hit my long iron over the hybrid. That might be because I was playing golf before the hybrids were invented. I know I feel more comfortable with my irons. JM2C
Perfect timing on the video for me! I have always played 2 hybrids (a 19 and a 24 degree.) but recently I have been hitting my 27* 5 iron significantly more accurately than my 24* hybrid (which although it is easier to launch the hybrid, and I dont fat or thin it, I do feel like it tends to leak sideways more than my irons) so I am now thinking of adding a 24* instead of the hybrid.... There’s always one more tinker just over the horizon 😂
Just took my 5 iron out of my bag and replaced it with a 25 deg hybrid simply because i hit a hybrid better than i hit my 5 iron full stop had a fit and it sits perfect between my 21 deg hybrid and my 6 iron
I’m a 10 handicap with a decent swing speed, however I suit a hybrid far more and have become a better hybrid player. I’ve tried longer irons recently and can see why I play a hybrid. Would love to be able to play either but know hybrid is much better for me.
I play of 12(11.7) looking to get down or closer to single figures this season. Iv always been a good mid to short iron player but found 4 iron 3 iron I don’t have the speed to get the carry. My 3 iron doesn’t carry much further than my 5iron it’s more like a bullet stinger.but I can chase it up to and over 200yards in the summer, but obviously no good in the winter. I tested multiple hybrids out over the winter and had some success hitting great shots flying all the way into longer par4s that I previously couldn’t with an iron. But I also put myself in trouble a lot when I was slightly off! comes of face so hot I’d find parts of the course I would never find with an approach with an iron. Also I’d find myself trying to reach par 5s in two with the new potential carry or trying to reach greens on long par 4s when I should be laying up short and taking a bogey. Iv decided to stick with irons and play conservatively if maybe one day my handicap comes down to singles il have to rethink. But until then I’m sticking to my strength which is irons and low bullet 3 irons that might not have carry but have more accuracy
I prefer the hybrid. What I notice is that my 5 iron peak heights later in the flight, as compared to my most lofted hybrid. My 23 degree peaks sooner and longer the my 5 iron. Sometimes I use my hybrid to replace my 5 iron. I just more comfortable with my hybrids which is what I think is the major point.
I play driver , 3 iron down constant , 3 wood ,2 iron , 3 hybrid I swap around depending on the course and wind on a given day . And the length of the course . For example my 3 iron will hold a green out to 215 carry , but longer par 3s 220- 235 I would use my 3 hybrid , Tight courses I will use a 3 wood to drive or a 2 iron if it’s into wind so I swap around to the circumstances .
I found this to be particularly interesting, because I constantly switch between my 5 iron, and its hybrid replacement. With my new set of Mizuno JPX 919 Hot Metal, my first "old man" clubs (lightweight graphite, senior flex), I'm finding that there is almost no difference in both clubs, including difficulty in hitting each, unlike ever other set I've had, where the 5 hybrid was considerably easier.
Longest is 5, always gamed 19 degree 3 hybrid and now just replaced my 4 iron with 23 degree hybrid, don’t think I swing fast enough to be effective and consistent with the long iron. Hybrid behind the ball at address just gives me more confidence
I play a F8 single length 5 iron as the longest iron I can hit that performs like it should for distance and height. After that, I'm hitting a 4 and a 3 hybrid, which also perform right where I want them to. The F8 4 iron plays shorter than the 5 iron; probably a mental thing, but the 4 hybrid is so easy to strike and work that there is not even the slightest temptation to carry the iron any longer.
Mark, do a video on the importance of angle of attack. That’s an order. I’ve been concentrating on aoa almost exclusively and I almost feel competent all of a sudden.
Interesting vid. Would be interesting to see what Matt could do with a "fairway wood" swing with his hybrid. Having both shots in his bag is only going to help him. Wouldnt necessarily effect his gapping but rather give him more variety on shots like Mark is with his Rinky and Power.
I use my 3 hybrid off the tee to find fairways as its the more forgiving club but if i want playability i use my 4iron as its easier to manipulate flight and shape
I have been teetering back and forth with my 3 iron and 3 hybrid. I can knock the 3h just as far as my 5 wood but it can go miles left. For me the 3 iron gets in less trouble when mis hit.
I play a 19° and 23° hybrid for the simple fact that a poor hit hybrid will always do better than a poor hit long iron. And hitting a long iron well is arguably the hardest skill in golf.
I’ve got the apex’s like Lockey now and have gone with the 3-pw on the fitter’s recommendation might opt for the apex 2 hybrid though as seems to go as far as my current 3 wood. These irons are like hitting hybrids anyway forgiveness wise with the ol’ 360 cup face technology
What you really need to do is get an 18 handicapper into the lab and see if there is an improvement obvious, between him hitting an iron or the equivalent hybrid. Coach Lokey can hit both, but really the selling point is that they are easier to hit for the ‘average’ player not professionals!
Just a question... What about the third option... You have the Hybrid vs. Player's Iron happening here, what about the middle option of playing a game improvement iron like the regular Apex instead? Would that be a blend of the two that would be more useful?
So true. Love my hybrid. Consistent distance across the face. Easy to elevate and hold greens. Used to miss greens a lot from 230-250 yards. When I switched to a 4 hybrid I started hitting a lot more par 5 greens in 2. I also love hitting little half swing knock downs with the hybrid because the club is so forgiving
Hi Mark. This has been bugging me a lot lately and wanted to get your take. With mid irons, do you like to see hands slightly forward (inner left thigh) at address or dead center? Thanks!
Great video as always. Have just bought the Sim 4 hybrid which goes about 200 yards. Fills my gap from 3 wood to 5 iron. Still carrying a 4 iron but never use it. Considering either a 3 or 5 hybrid. Any advice or suggestions please?
Great video. Two quick questions Mark. 1st: Typically, what is the total/max/range of yardage for a golf course you and your Muppets play? 2nd: I know you want to hit your driver longer but what if you lose accuracy with the extra yardage off the tee and miss more fairway? Still would go with the longer distance no matter what? Thanks from the States
I can hit my 4&5 iron in my p770 irons, but in ping g410 don’t manage the 5 iron at all so need to rely on fairway woods or rescue hybrid clubs, I am still a high handicap thought
For what it's worth the p770 5 iron is 26 degree loft and the ping 5 iron is only 23. That amount of loft in an iron can be difficult for most amateurs to elevate properly.
Kourtney , thanks for your input, I am not totally mad then, I stop at a 26 degree 6 iron in Cleveland launcher cbx too just can’t get the 5 working, old call away ft irons again 5 iron and 4 off the tee same as p770, lie angle seems better on p770 and shafts are shorter which I think also helps me .
6:15 ... does it matter if a player can see if one club goes higher than another? no. all he has to know is that it does and because it does it lands softer with less run-out on the greens...if that is the desired effect. it's the result that matters, not whether or not a player can see one club out performing another in the air.
Also having higher more consistent launch will give you much more consistent distances. When amateure start hitting those low launching shots with long irons you get a much greater distance dispersion because your reliant on roll out which is course condition dependant
I always find a hybrid 3 will go the same distance as my 2 iron. So I use the 2 iron in the summer and the hybrid in the winter. More carry I think with the hybrid. But a 2 iron in the summer you can bullet it down the fairway and it runs like a MF. More control with the 2iron.
It's a fairway wood with an iron shaft isn't? It's made for players who struggle with length(swing speed.) These are my conceptions of the clubs purpose. Mostly I believe it's because you won't buy a 7wood so they rebranded it "hybrid" which I'm fine with and debating playing a 20-21° next season.
Not exactly. A hybrid still has a smaller head than a fairway wood. A fairway wood will give a higher flight and more carry than a hybrid or a long iron of equivalent loft, and high lofted fairway woods including the 7, 9, and 11 woods can be had from some of the big brands. Slower swingers with accurate strikes might prefer the control of an iron, on the other hand, as might players looking to reduce left and right dispersion.
@@reillywalker195 I'm not saying people can't buy a 7 wood, I'm saying people won't. So they gave us a 7 wood head, put it on a 3 Iron shaft, called it a hybrid and Bam. Sales. Everyone wants one! Even I want one. You're saying that's not exactly true because the hybrids head is smaller? If so, that just seems off the point, the head is of a wooded design. It has 0 bounce? It has a convex face? It's a wood then. If not then I see. Is it convex? Does it have a 0 bounce sole? But to say a player struggling with tempo would favor an iron? That's not correct. If you can't swing with good to great tempo the 3 Iron is not going to be a reliable club. Now the 7 wood? That you can rely on if you're a slower tempo player. Then ball flight is mostly down to delivery. Ball placement, angle of attack, mean the video we're commenting on kind of proved that. I need a set of clubs from 2010 or better. The sets I'm likely to go after some don't have a 3 Iron. I don't care for a super flexible shaft, regular flex or stiff are my preference and I'm only finding 7 woods in senior flex. So... Thinking a 20° hybrid. It's gap between the 7 wood and 3 Iron, but it also gives me a nice fairway bunker club and approach clubs for when I've room for a roll out (that's what I'm guessing at least.) Do you play a hybrid? If so, does it give you a good roll out?
@@cmhurryit I play a 7 wood and a 4 hybrid. They both launch significantly higher than an iron of equal loft. I have a lot of speed (122 mph) with driver. I hit 7 wood 265 yards and 4 hybrid 245. Depending the greens I can get them to stop within 10 feet of where they land. Much easier to stop then an iron because the landing angle is steeper.
I strike my 4 iron lovely off the tee, but struggle with it off the fairway. I'm thinking of putting a hybrid 4 in for fairways/ semi rough, would this make sense to yourself ???
Definitely worth testing. I stopped at 5 iron because I couldn't get the 4 iron high enough to fly the right distance unless it was off a tee. And I love my hybrid. Went with the ping g400
@e james Hybrids and irons use the same shafts if you're looking at graphite shafted irons. Graphite shafts add an extra half inch normally over steel shafts, but that's it.
With the advent of hybrids and higher lofted fairway woods, the 5 iron is now a long iron in some bags. Some 5 irons these days have the same loft as 3 irons of yesteryear.
My last club purchase, i traded my 4 iron for a hybrid but lost my ability to play low shots under branches and such as i cannot hit a low hybrid. There are always lots of trees playing in Canada so I went back to a 4 iron. So how fo you hit a low/stinger hybrid?
Put your weight forward, the ball slightly ahead of centre, and the shaft forward at address, and take a short backswing and follow-through. That should give you a nice low flight.
