This is a comparison of the Nitto Ridge Grappler and the Toyo Open Country RT. I have seen several videos on the subject of hybrid tires. Not hybrid like a Prius but hybrid like a little more aggressive that an all terrain but less aggressive than a mud terrain. I think these are the two best examples. I think that the original hybrid tire was the Goodyear DuraTrac which I covered in my all terrain video. Check out the links below. Enjoy!

I just got back from getting two replacement Ridge Grapplers on the rear of my 2500 Ram Diesel. I use these a little more aggressively than most would. I do rally recovery work and long distance extreme rallying. I originally got these from Nitto as a sponsor for one of the events, (Alcan 5000) they weren't what I ordered, but I couldn't be happier with these tires. I came from Toyo ATII and it's night and day as far as traction is concerned. I am working as heavy recovery in Merritt BC this weekend for the Pacific Forest Rally. They are forecasting snow, but I won't need to switch to the Blizzaks for this little bit. These and a set of chains will get me anywhere except on ice. When we do Alcan work in the winter, I'll still keep my Blizzaks. (Edit) Just returned from the rally I reference above. Snow in every stage and really slippery mud, these tires were predictable and stable the entire way. I pulled several rally cars out of ditches and banks and never pulled out the chains or any other traction devices. These are seriously rally approved!

I had both the R/T (33x12.5r18) & the Ridge Grapplers (285/75r18) on my 05 CrewCab F150 Lariat, and now have the ridge graps on my 15 Sierra.. The R/T's were fantastic for the first 10-15K miles, but then quickly became slicks on anything other than drive pavement. They were extremely dangerous in the rain/light snow, and despite their aggressive knobby's they would just dig into the ground anytime you were in some light mud.. After 45K miles & one wreck in the rain later, I decided to put the Ridge Graps on. Their handling (wet & dry) characteristics blew me away right off the bat, and I could immediately tell that they were in another league of their own. Made my 05 feel like a sports car during this rainy winter despite having 190K miles on it with all original OEM parts (ball joints, control arms, etc.) that were so worn the ball joints could've fallen out... I even had a set of the original TA/KO's on my 05 before the R/T's, and they couldn't have even begun to hold a candle to these newly engineered Ridge Graps (2016 release). I now have them on my 15 Sierra (285/65r20), and haven't looked back. If you value your families safety in the rain and simply want the best tire money can buy, then buy the Ridge Graps. Great video, and kudos to whoever read down this far!

Randy Palmer interest that you say that cause I have Toyo R/T’s 33x12.50r18 on a 2016 tahoe with 30k miles on them and 55% tread life left in them and I’ve never had an issue with them in pouring rain never lost traction in rain and they are great in dry no breaking issues they are a tad stiffer then a regular street tire but the only time they ever lost traction is when I turn traction control off and floor it other then then that it doesn’t spin in rain or dry unless you make them spin they have been a phenomenal tire for me because they are more aggressive then an at and still are very quiet toad manners but performed good on mud sand dirt and hot ass Texas weather and shitty roads I just have an extremely hard time believing what you say cause of my experience’s with the tire especially since they are the exact same rubber compound

2 years late to the party but I gotta say after watching countless tire reviews and comparisons, this was the best one. Very informative. I currently run the Nitto’s on my Ram 2500, they have about 15k miles on them and they seem to be holding up good. I’d say they’re at 50%. The Nitto’s are a Great off road tire. I’ve taken them off road a lot and they do great. They’re not great in the snow, however. The next set I’m gonna run are the Toyo Open Country RT. I wanna compare the two off road, in the snow, ect. If I don’t like the Toyo, I’ll go back to the Nitto. Really Great Video!

I have racked up almost 50k miles on my 17 F250 CCLB Powerstroke running 35x12.50 18 Ridge Grapplers and still going. Great tires...will be getting a new set before next winter. One bit of advice...I had a lot of tire squirm when they were installed and they were aired up to stock factory specs @ 65psi. I called Nitto and they sent me an inflation chart based on weight...aired down to 50psi and tires were much more stable!!

I just ordered a replacement set of Open Country RT's for my '17 F350 Super Duty in 37x13.50R20. I currently have over 91,000 kms (56,5xx miles) on them, and they've still got about 25% tread left. Unfortunately, they wont get me through another winter...so its new tire day! These have been great tires, not overly loud, great grip in many conditions including snow (even though they're not snow rated). Running 55 psi all around, and having been rotated twice in their life, they've worn completed even. Highly recommend these tires! Great review Campus.

I just had a set of P285/70/17 RTs mounted up to replace Toyo AT2(This tire misbehaves in heavy rain and easily hydroplane). In terms of heavy rain, the Toyo RT's grip very well. I tried unsuccessfully to make them hydro plane and its clear the tires grip increases in the wet and has good water channeling.

I was told by a manager at Big O that the Nitto and Toyo are built in the same factory with the same compounds. Tread design, appearance, and function would be the reason to pick one over the other. I am getting a set of R/T's installed today on my Duramax. I spend a lot of time aired down in the sand, hunting the mountains and harsh rocky / muddy / snowy terrain of Utah. The R/T looked to have a slightly more aggressive tread for mud and snow cleanout. No wrong choice on those two options in my mind.

Both great tires. I’ve ran them side by side on near identical trucks. And I’ve ran both more than once. Overall I prefer the RT; they’ve held up better as far as mileage as well as less chunking on shitty oilfield roads. I do think the ridge grappler looks a little better but I’ve put both tires through the ringer and the RT just flat out performs no matter what you throw at it. 60-80k miles under f250/350’s with a lot of rough roads and towing miles on them. 35-50k on the ridge grapplers. Can’t go wrong either way. I’m ready to try out the new RT trail next though!

Excellent video. I learned a few things so thank you. I own a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon with an AEV 3.5" lift. I ran the Toyo Open Country R/Ts 35x12.5x17s for ~2years -20k miles and they performed great. I sold them recently and now I am running the Nitto Ridge Grapplers in the same size. I don't know why but it feels like a stiffer tire and seems to have a bit more road noise. Off-road performance is about the same. Thanks for taking the time to compare the two tires. I think the are both excellent with very few small differences.

We have a Toyota Prado in Australia. We have had 275x65xR18 Nitto Ridge Grapplers fitted to the vehicle almost 6 months ago. Which are a shade under 33" Tires. They perform well on road & are fantastic off road. I highly recommend them for a surf chasing family wagon, that can tow a camper trailer into hard to get to spots on the coast & will replace them with the same tires unless Nitto come out with something even better when they come to the end of their life.

I don’t think I’ve heard or read anything but good about either of these tires, especially the Ridge Grappler. I’ve heard & read that they’re very quiet for what they are. I’m surprised that the Ridge Grappler isn’t 3-peak rated whereas the Toyo C/T is; the Ridge Grappler appears to have quite a bit more siping.

I would argue Kelly started the segment back in the 90's with the MSR. They still sell the TSR now, which predates the Cooper ST Max. I have run the St Max on work trucks and didn't care for them. Still better than a slick though. The Kelly TSR's are a hidden gem. They are a 60-70,000 mile tire on a 1/2 ton pickup. At least they were for me (owned two sets). They are good on the road and never had me wishing i had more tread void in sticky mud. I would highly recommend you review them. That said i am looking for something new for my new truck which has 20" wheels and the Kelly TSR doesn't come in 20" sizes. I am strongly considering one of these two in the video.

Personally have a set or R/T’s they are phenomenal hands down best tire I’ve had, I have put them through everything but snow and did great never got stuck with them but you have to get the tires spinning to eject better but it’s expected because they aren’t a true mt I have 30k on them and I have plenty of life on them still personally I’d recommend them over the nittos for offroading because the shoulder lugs are a lot more open and the tread blocks are just a lot more spaced out in general only down side is the sidewall isn’t as aggressive as I’d like it to be it’s very mild it doesn’t scream off road and I think that’s the only down side this tire
@tailhook44

I agree about the sidewall. For a hybrid tire the sidewall looks pretty weak. I have KO2 right now and they have a more aggressive sidewall. But these RTs will be my next set of tires.

I had the ridge grapplers on my old truck, I have to say that they are great and quite, but when you take am off ramp with speed they sound like MT tires. I park on gravel so gravel use to get stuck between the grooves. I saw that they were wearing out faster but can't really Blake it on the tires because my alignment was shot. We use the Nitto Ridge Grappler on our 2019 Wrangler Sport S 2 door. Are they expensive or do they provide an awesome Value? We have 41,000 miles on ours and the little step he speaks of is finally worn off. I wouldn’t be surprised if they could go 80,000 miles before they hit the treadwear indicator. I’ll never know because I will use these for another 9000 miles and sell them on Facebook market place for 300 and go get another set as I never use a tire all the way to the tread wear indicator. These perform well off road. Even in the snow, I was totally impressed. Mind that you are on the slippery stuff and need to slow down. But never got stuck or get have a white knuckle ride. You won’t be disappointed with these if your in the market for an all terrain tire.

I have a 2019 jeep JLU rubicon with the 2 inch mopar lift. I installed the Nitto rigge grappler 35x12.5R17 on it and I run 28 to 30 psi cold if I run them at 32 or more psi cold the steering is all over the place I used the chaulk test to see where the entire threat made full contact with the ground. I put 4000 mi on them but never in the rain. just recently 6-7 to 6/10/2019 we got heavy rains here in atlanta GA and I hit a few puddles and runoff across the road and it hydroplaned. very scary. The tire looks great but now that I look at the tread I noticed that water at the center of the tire has no direct path to excape to the side making it easier to hydroplane. when it rains I slow down,or pull over or don,t drive at all and on wet winding roads very slow and causious. Overall I love the tire, but because of my experience in the rain I WILL NOT BUY THESE TIRES EVER AGAIN AND WILL NOT RECOMMEND
