According to Ron from Hyendfed, the ground connection is only used when the box is mounted close to the ground and the antenna is in an inverted L configuration. If mounting the box up high or in a sloping configuration then no connection is needed to the ground lug. I have 2 of their antennas, the coax (part of it) acts as the counterpoise. I use a 1:1 choke/isolator but at the radio end otherwise putting the choke too close to the feed point will adversely affect the antenna performance.
A really good review. Good production value also. To the point, no waving the camera around, GREAT AUDIO. I'm getting back into HAM radio and investigating a new antenna system. Lots of trees in all the wrong places. Seriously considering an End Fed Antenna. HYENDFED seems to have some of the best hardware I've seen. I've imported custom built organs from a company in The Netherlands. As expected, attention to detail. I'd like to find a used one like you did. They're not Cheap! Appreciate the info. 73's DE N3TNS/AE
Cool vid. Thanks. I just put up a 40m EFHW as a fun and ridiculous experiment, and used my homebrew multi-tap UNUN (64:1 tap)... and made it only TWO feet high! I did it to make my brother Art laugh. He's a ham too but lives in another state. Thing is, the first contact I made was with OL725PLZ in the Czech Repub. I couldn't believe it.
Nice review. I just bought this antenna and wonder how do you connect a ground to it? Do I need to attach a wire connected to a ground rod and insert the rod into the dirt or just attach a wire and let it hang from the ground connection lug next to the SO 239?
Don't cut the antenna! Just fold it back on itself. You may need the extra length in a different deployment situation, depending on ground beneath it and other parameters.
@Chris B yes. It was insulated. I bought my first HF radio and didnt have an antenna. I made a dipole with speaker wire. I left extra to trim. The swr went from 5:1 to 1.1:1 by wrapping about a foot back and twisting it on itself and securing with a cable tie.
I have one and did exactly the same with my feed , works a treat, I am in UK and can get Canada when the propagation is right. Mine is about 6 m off the ground with the feed away from the house.
you mentioned cutting the wire to get to exact resonance, and not to fold. I've always been taught that folding/twisting any excess is totally fine, that the "Lenth" of the wire from the center feed point to end insulator is all that matters. I'd like to know where you found this info to cut it versus twisting back the extra. Thanks for the GREAT Video!!!!
Hi Did you have to cut any of the wire /stub off on the end to tune the antenna, i just received my 4 band extra short model in the mail .i have not installed or tried to tune the 40 meter or 80 meter bands. Also did you have the need to use an antenna tuner for and of the bands ? Now that I am retired I am getting back into the hobby. I really like your videos and thanks For answering my question about one of your other videos
I did fine tune mine to be resonant on 3.730 MHz and I cut the wire I use a tuner when I work other parts of the band. I know a few users who shortened the wire by folding it over.
Hmmm. That balun or unun more accurately should present a resistive load at 1:1 wouldn't it? So why would putting inductance on the feed line make any difference? Also, is the unun box plastic or metal? Just speculating. Maybe the problem was the RV fan not having EMI protection. Is this 49:1?
Just click on the USA flag at the top of the web page and the text will translate to english. I bought mine from a friend who discovered that it was to big for his small lot.
How does one adjust for SWR on different bands? You mention 80M but how about the other bands. Is there much interaction when changing the length of the single wire? Thanks.
It's pre tuned for 40, 20, 15 and 10, set up a good ground keep the antenna away from metal objects and your good to go, no tuning required. I still use this antenna every day, it works great on my small city lot.
Do u have (rfi feed back/common mode current ) porblem?I ordered same as yours.Im waiting. How i should set up? Horizontal or bottom feed I can manage to set up in my apartment.
I've got the exact same antenna here, although mine is 400 W version. My three point is directly above my shack. When I transmit I wipe out my mother's digital TV box. However, it doesn't appear to interfere with digital television itself. I'm hoping that a choke will sort the problem. I'm also planning on turning the antenna around so the feed time is at the bottom of the garden. One other thing I wanted to run by you. How well does the antenna work on 80 m for you? 80 m is terrible for me. I was hoping that turning the antenna around might improve the performance.
Probably a 49:1. A primary with two turns, then 5 turns or so to equal 7, then crossed over on the 8th turn, then another secondary winding of 7 turns. 7 squared = 49:1.
@goinghomesomeday1 not really look up the TTFD antenna. They serve a very useful purpose . And it is well known what is inside this antenna. Just as someone said a ferrite code transformer. No mystery about it. An end fee half wave is a resonant antenna but very high impedance so the transformer brings the feed down to be a fair match.
i have yaesu 857d+antenna tuner MFJ-945E(not yet antenna).i d like some help. is HyEndFed antenna 3band 10,20,40m good choise?not enough space in the roof
The reason it's playing at all is the gazebo is acting as your counterpoise. Without a counterpoise, an end fed is only half of an antenna. Many amateurs do not understand this about end fed antennas and just toss one up in the air with no counterpoise. It performs like a leaky dummy load with no counterpoise.
Wow, the HyEndFed multi band revew is good, it´s ease for installs in Brazil, tks guy. Very excellent explain....for portable work ... 73 from Celso PT2NK.
hiya dennis quick question do you remember what kind of taxes and duties you paid to get that to Canada and what happens if you have extra wire due to space can you coil it up? thanks 73s va3kil
Hi I bought mine used, the ham who imported it could not use it on his property. There is no duties on ham radio gear imported in Canada but you will have to pay GST and PST. 73 Denis
I've had it slopped, as a V and an L about 30 feet off the ground and I did not need to use a tuner. I had in a Z slope in one spot but I had to use a tuner for that setup and it worked okay but it's hard to say considering the poor band conditions these days. All that said I'd buy this antenna again .
Great review - just discovering your channel. I'm sorry - I'm still laughing thinking about your rain cover bouncing around every time you transmitted. ;)
Ugly balun is the ugly and dirty way to choke your feedline! Roughly you can reach 500 ohm of resistance for common mode currents, do you know that? Google for G3TXQ and have a look at real man chokes! Also buy a pair of FT240-43 toroids and a pair of meters of RG-142 coax cable, wind 12 turns in each toroid, both in series, and you’re done!
