Leslie (Aaron Burr) absolutely steals the show for me, his stage presence is outstanding and no need to comment on his voice and how he matches different styles depending on what each song requires

Yes! As great as his voice is, his presence and acting should be equally praised imo. And thanks for pointing out the voice changes for different songs… is it also a reflection of how his character has no strong convictions but just “adapts his voice” to the situation? 👀

There are easter eggs hidden in the musical styles. For example, King George sings in the style of British bands of the 60s like the Beatles, a style that in the US was known as... the British Invasion. Then when Jefferson comes back, unlike every other American, he doesn't rap - he did "basically missed the late eighties", aka the formative decade of rap and hip-hop. Also, Samuel Seabury's song is in an 18th century Classical style, showing him as hopelessly out of date while everyone around him has already moved on to hip-hop.

Not to mention everyone’s pacing reflected their personalities as well. Angelica’s powerful belt, Eliza’s light and sweet notes, Hamilton can’t spit his words out faster enough, though his schemes slow as he ages and matures. Washington’s sections are rigid while he’s the major general and loosen up he closer he gets to retirement, etc etc etc

Eliza tried to have a biography written about Alexander three times after his death, I believe, but nobody managed to get through the thousands of pages of writing he left behind. In the end she passed away before his story could be put in ink. I think the gasp at the end is Eliza realising her last wish is fulfilled. Not only Alexander’s story is told, but hers too, in a way.

This musical is actually incredible in the planning of it. The foreshadowing of dual characters played by some of the actors who both end in the same position. The irony of Hamilton actually throwing away his shot, the callbacks to previous songs and themes, the bullet character…honestly I could go on a two hour dive into all the tiny intricate details and it still wouldn’t be enough.

L-MM famously read Ron Chernow’s biography of Hamilton on vacation & was inspired by it (and brought Chernow on as and advisor). I’d actually read the book when it came out (along with his biographies of Washington & Grant), so I knew a lot about Hamilton before the play. Because Hamilton was never President, and people don’t learn their history, they were about to take Hamilton off the $10 bill before the play came out (that idea was quietly dropped). Certain things were changed for the sake of making a compelling narrative. The biggest change was the Schuyler family. Angelica was the oldest - but there were 15 children, 8 who grew to adulthood, 3 of whom were sons. Also, in 1780 (when the play has her & Eliza meeting Hamilton), she was already married with a son & daughter. But they did have a close relationship (letters preserved in the Library of Congress). She also had a similar correspondence with Jefferson & the Marquis de Lafayette. Also, though we only see Philip, and hear about a “daughter”, and “children”, the Hamiltons had 8 children - all lived to adulthood, and all but Philip (obviously) lived pretty long lives. Well, all but the Philip WE SAW - they actually had their 8th child, a son they also named Philip, in 1802 (after the elder Philip’s duel in 1801). The younger Philip lived to the age of 82. Oh, and though the play dramatically reconciled the Hamiltons over the older Philip’s death, Eliza had a son right about the time the Reynolds Scandal hit (1797), and a daughter 2 years later, in 1799. The greatest changes, I think, are to Burr - to make him a traditionally tragic character (Shakespeare’s tragedies center on individuals whose own flaws were the seeds of their tragedy). But Burr was actually made to look better by the play (believe it or not). Of all the changes made by the play for dramatic effect, the one that bothers me the most is Burr snarling “he will not make an orphan of my daughter”. That daughter (Theodosia) who we see him singing to as a baby at the same time Hamilton is singing to his first child, baby Philip, was married, with a son, living in South Carolina. Chernow is a great biographer, though he takes active and strong dislikes to people, more obviously than most successful “objective” biographers. Among them (for Chernow) are Burr to some degree, but more so with Jefferson & Robert E. Lee. Anyway, I love this play. I love King George (who actually did go mad in later life, which explains the changes as the play goes along). Funny, the first roll I became aware of the actor (Jonathan Groff) was as Kristoff in Frozen. 😏

There are quite a few changes from history, notably: Burr, Jefferson, and Madison were not the people who Hamilton told about the affair, they found out through the Reynolds Pamphlet, it was three different people. One of them, Charles Monroe, was challenged to a duel by Hamilton, but Burr (who was Monroe's second) managed to stop it before either of them were shot. Philip died after the Election of 1800 not before. The tipping point wasn't Hamilton voting against Burr at the election, that was only part of it, it was actually a few years later when Hamilton staunchly discredited Burr's running for governor despite them going for the same ideals. (He also supported a smear campaign by the party's rivals). Maria Reynolds was being abused by her husband and he was threatening to kill their daughter, Susan, if she didn't find someone to have an affair with and then blackmail. She was considered very respectable and married a doctor after her husband was arrested. Hamilton actually supported 'positions for life' and was at first considered a sort of royalist (his views did change over time). Angelica was already married when she met Hamilton, she also had several brothers. Adams didn't fire Hamilton, although they didn't get along, Hamilton had already been discreetly let go from government when Washington was still President. At the duel, Hamilton fired his gun, it missed Burr. It is unclear if he was intending to hit him or not, because he didn't miss him by much. Edit: Wrote the wrong name

Eliza’s orphanage is still in existence today as an organization supporting at-need and foster youths. LMM discovered that fact while the show was still in tryouts at the Public Theatre and sent them a big check as a donation. They called him the day after receiving it to figure out what the deal was, and only then did they find out about the connection to this upcoming Broadway production.

We don't know exactly how Eliza reacted, we know there were a lot of letters that Alexander wrote to her from other correspondence, but no one has found anything that she got from Alexander before the Reynolds pamphlet was published. She could have burned them. We know Alexander slept in his office for a time, but he claimed that he choose to (out of guilt or whatever). We do know that in the letter he wrote to Eliza in preparation for the duel with Burr, he calls Eliza the "Best of wives and best of women...". One of many details that Lin-Manuel Miranda incorporated into this based on a true story but fictional presentation. Thanks for sharing your reaction! 😁

Yes! One of my favorite live theater experiences! One of the things that's missed in this stage recording is just how epic (imo) "Hurricane" is from a higher angle. It's already so cool with the slow motion and everyone rotating around Hamilton, but from a slightly higher vantage point (not straight on or close up, like in the "movie"), it really looks like a hurricane. The lighting is incredible. Someone else mentioned it and I'm here to second it, if you're interested you should check out "In The Heights," LMM's breakout musical (won him a couple of Tonys). There is a movie version that came out a couple years ago that's really beautiful.

Some musical suggestions: Chicago (2002) - possibly one of the greatest adaptations of a stage show ever. Rent (2005) - this show changed the face of musical theater in the 90s Tick Tick Boom (2021) - musical about the life of the writer/composer of Rent. Directed by Lin Manuel Miranda. Singin in the Rain (1952) - one of the best musicals of the golden era. Into the Woods (1989) - Filmed broadway cast, is on RU-vid in full. This is one of Stephen Sondheim's best shows in my opinion. He’s a theater legend. Hairspray (2007) - a fantastically fun and energetic show with surprising depth. Set in the 60s.

I agree with all of those recommendations I would add for Rent you can see the last performance that was filmed on broadway if you want to watch the show itself, like how you just watched Hamilton. There is also a good film adaptation of Rent staring most of the original broadway cast. I personally prefer the live show (I saw it live 3 times). I would also recommend In the Heights (LMM 1st big Tony award winning musical. It was recently adapted to film (with some of the actors from Hamilton including LMM) and although changes was made from the stage production i absolutely loved it, filmed on location in Washington Heights you can’t beat the backdrop of the story, the choreography is off the charts & the music is incredible! Great story telling that will touch all emotions. Lastly Les Mislerable there is 2 concerts 10th & 25th anniversary and a movie version starring Hugh Jackman & Anne Hathaway. All amazing! I’ve seen it live in London twice and it was AMAZING. The first time, I’d managed to nab the coveted front middle seat which goes for only £37. Dear Theodosia was so emotional so up close. Burr and Hamilton sat on chairs an arms length away from me, singing with such love. Then when Philip dies, I sobbed so hard. And again when Eliza sings the final song. When the cast took their bows several of the cast blew kisses and made sweet gestures at me cause I was still semi-hyperventilating from the emotion while I was giving them a standing ovation. 😂 The second time I saw it I was seated quite far back in the stalls but it was actually really cool cause I could appreciate the turn table on the stage more as when I was in the front row I was so close that I couldn’t see their feet/the floor of the stage much.

With Mariah Reynolds it is really important to realize what kond of situation she was in. She was a married woman with a daughter, which gave her pretty much no way to earn or own money without her Husband permission. When Jhn Reynolds ran out on her and the girl, she was left entirely destetute and by all accounts when he was there he was a no-good wifebeater. There are two scenraios for what could have happened, both of which I would absolve Mariah from blame for. A) Her husband pimped her out. Made her find a wealthy married guy, sleep with him so Reynolds could extort them. She never really had a choice, because, again, she was more or less bound to him. Divorce was in theory an option in some states, but in practice very difficult and she still would be without money. B) Her Husband just up and left her for a while, and this was the only option she saw to earn any money for her and her child. nearly no Jobs that pay even a little bit decently would take a "ruined" woman with a child in tow, so this was pretty much her only option and I can't fault her for trying to get one wealthy patreon instead of looking for random johns on the street. By all accounts Hailton seemed to have cared for her and treated her reasonably well, but in the end, this i a situation Mariah could only lose. Sadly, we do not have any accounts of her reaction to the publication of their letters, because who would be intrested in that...

When we first meet Philip in Act 2, Eliza is teaching him to play the opening of "The Ten Duel Commandments" on the piano. That is the sickest, darkest, most morbid foreshadowing Miranda could have gone with there and I am SO HERE FOR IT.

8:25 I must say I’m impressed that you caught onto so quickly to Angelica’s love towards Hamilton and also felt sad about the situation. I’ve seen plenty of reviews where people either don’t catch the words or don’t process things from Angelica’s perspective which is clearly what this song is doing. I’ve seen reviewers drag her because they think she wants her sister’s husband like she wants to steal his love away or something. However, she is the one that sacrificed love by giving up her chance to be happily married to him. Earned a subscriber!

i’ve been a theatre nerd since middle school, and when the buzz for this show started in the summer of 2015 i became OBSESSED. i was lucky enough to see it in april 2016 (this film version was done over a few performances in june) and it was one if the greatest experiences of my whole life. almost the entire original cast was still part of the production- i missed jonathan groff (king george) by only one week and it was such a blow. he came back specifically for the filming of these. ANYWAY yes this is one of the greatest musicals ever written, and this film version is incredible.

Hamilton really is a feat of musical theater from top to bottom. There are so many easter eggs and lines that foreshadow the later events, it makes sense why it took Lin 7 years to write it. His breakout show, In the Heights, was made a movie version of the musical a few years ago and it didn't get the attention it deserved (because of covid), but that's one of my favorite stage-to-movie adaptations ever! Also, if you'd like to see another proshot, the Newsies stage production is on disney+ too! That show is definitely one of my favorites and is such a comfort of mine from growing up, and funnily enough it was filmed in LA at the Pantages which is where I saw Hamilton in person for the first time. I'll always say recording proshots of stage musicals is a much better option than changing things to fit into a movie format, and Hamilton definitely shows that. Great video!!

Fun fact the character's motifs changes as they transition to act 2: Eliza's look around motif: Before: We're lucky to live a breakthrough in history After: We're lucky that we're still alive at this time Angelica's Satisfied motif: Before: He not satisfied romantically After: He not satisfied at ANYTHING Throw away my shot motif: Before: Don't let your shot pass by After: (Spoilers) He got shot. Duh History has it's eyes on you mot: Before: History is relying on you After: History now knows what all you've done Wait for it motif: After: don't rush things Before: Burr rushed and killed Hammy Helpless motif: Before: Eliza's helpless with Hamilton's charisma After: She's helpless, like no help (This one hit deep) And Peggy motif Before: And Peggy After: And Peggy Thanks for coming to my Ted talk ;p

Even though I live in NYC, I had to travel to Chicago to see Hamilton on stage. Tickets out here were obscenely expensive, and a friend of mine got us two tickets to see it in Chicago as a birthday present to me. It was every bit as incredible as everyone said it was, and the actor who played Hamilton in Chicago, Miguel Cervantes, is now playing the role on Broadway.

I saw it in New York, front row, with the original cast. Husband and I won the “Ham for Ham” lottery when we were there for a single day. We could not believe our luck. I could have reached out and grabbed Lin Manuel’s boot! I have seen it three times since, here in Cleveland. Each time in a different place in the theater-toward the back, balcony, middle of the floor. We saw completely different things in each place. When it comes back to town, we will see it again. Truly a fantastic experience live.

I was forced to listen to songs from this soundtrack for months. My daughter was obsessed. Eventually I listened to the soundtrack from beginning to end and then went down the rabbit hole. I bought the book that inspired Lin to do the play and read it within a few days. It was very good. The soundtrack played consistently for a long time. I couldn’t afford to go to the show so you can imagine how happy I was during the pandemic that they were releasing the musical. There’s *so* many little details that people can miss on the first watch. Lin is a genius.

I saw the Hamilton show via the traveling cast. I wish I could have seen the original cast on Broadway but the Disney show is a great way to experience that cast. My favorite moment was when they did the Rewind scene - my jaw dropped at the visuals witnessing that live. A close second was when Thomas Jefferson is introduced and he references the state of Virginia (which is my home state and where I saw the show live). The actor put a little extra emphasis in the lyric and dance for the home crowd. 😊

There are two short films on Disney+ that go in-depth on the making of Hamilton. Well worth the time to see some of Lin Manuel Maranda’s influences and references while creating this masterpiece. There is also a cool RU-vid video of him performing the first rap of this at a White House poetry jam. Later on when Hamilton went back to the WH to do a performance, President Obama joked that they were literally in the room where it happened. Yes, I’m obsessed with this play. I’ve seen many, many plays and this is still a favorite. Everything about it was innovative and meaningful. Thanks for the reaction.

A detail and character I love is the character called ‘the bullet.’ She is seen killed early on in the show, and then from then on she carries the bullets meant for each character. She is death personified- she shakes hands with Laurens, he dies. Flirts with Phillip, next to die. She carries the bullet that hits and ultimately kills Hamilton himself, too.

I got to see Hamilton live (off Broadway) and the person who sang for Mariah was beautiful. Like i got shivers and started to tear up a bit, its been almost two years now and all i think about when hearing that song was how beautiful her singing was. Im not sure if you can fall in love with someones voice just hearing it once but id love to just get the chance to tell her how beautiful her voice was. I didn't get her name so i probably won't even get that chance but still all i think about when i think Hamilton now is her.
