After watching this video I checked my Walmart app and this Ebike was on sale for $699 and $999 before the discount. Went ahead and purchased it. Thanks
I did the calculations. $400 will address all the major short comings of bike if work done yourself. Rear wheel, advent x wide range drive train, heavy thick tires from specialized, shimano MT200 brakes. It would be a very blue level trail capable bike.
I've been waiting for this review for a while. This is a fantastic bike for the money. I have a small fleet of E-mountain bikes: an Orbea Rise H30 a Scott Patron and this Hyper E-ride mid drive. I immediately installed Zoom hydraulic disc brakes (probably the single most spectacular improvement) wider bars with lock on grips and ditched the twist shift. The ExoForm rear shock died almost immediately so I replaced it with a Suntour Raidon R air shock and it was almost as great an improvement as the hydraulic brakes. I swapped a 27.5" free hub rear wheel that allowed some lower gearing and a better derailleur. It now has an 11-50 tooth range. I replaced the factory Suntour fork with a Suntour Epixon air fork that dropped nearly 3.5 lbs off the front! I installed a 29x2.6 Maxxis Agressor on the front and a Specialized Slaughter Grid 27.5x2.6 rear tire. I had tons of pedal strikes even with the stock 29ers so I replaced the extremely long 175mm crank arms with 165mm for me and 152mm cranks since this is now my 11 yo sons primary ride. It now weighs 51 lbs and blows me away with it's performance! It has more power than the Orbea but nowhere near the power of the Scott. It still won't hang with those expensive bikes if you're going really fast but it's 1/3 of the price after all the mods! We've ridden 20 mile rides on one charge with room to spare. This bike has logged hundreds of miles over the last 6 months and has been completely reliable. Love your videos!
@@johndef5075 The only original part that actually failed was the rear shock. The other parts were only changed trying to chase more performance. For most people the bike is great in stock form.
Why don't all electric mountain bikes allow you to toggle off the pedal assist? Seems like almost every other bike you got to shut down completely to get the pedal assist off? This is a nice feature on this bike you can just toggle it off from 0 to 5! Anyone know why this is? Why is orbee arise and specialized and trek you have to shut down the bikes right in order not to have the motor on? It's weird they wouldn't think of just allowing you to toggle off the pedal assist??? Anyone know?
@@origins7298 I can turn off the pedal assist on my Bosch powered bikes just like this one and I'm 99% sure my Orbea is the same way. Not sure about those other brands tho
Realistically they spent on the "hard" items to replace and went budget on the things I can upgrade from home. Sounds like a great deal to me. I can start here and upgrade the bike to my hearts content.
I have this bike, it’s amazing, I’ve upgraded as slowly as I could afford it but now it’s a beast. I have a little over 350 trail miles and it’s one of my favorites bikes. All in all, I think I’m in $1900, and it’s a hoot for the money.
Very good report. I was hoping that you would have a report on this type of bike. Happy to see Wally Mart have this. I wonder how it would perform as a commuter bike. Judging from this report it sounds good. Thanks for doing what your doing as far as reports. Have a great new year.
it would be fine, though a cheap hub motor bike would be better unless you need a mtb and dont have space for 2 bikes. also for $1500, a 1000w hub motor will be much faster , less maintenance, and generally more reliable as its more simple and doesnt rely nor interfere with chain, gearing etc. also theres no throttle. torque sensing makes it less of an issue but i usually prefer the control of a throttle, even when pedaling.
I'm so glad you did a review of this bike, I think I sent you a link to this back on Jun 13, 2022, when I was looking at the Schwinn Axum at Walmart. I've graduated to a 2016 e-stream evo 3 aluminum 29 EMTB cause a friend of mine, was getting rid of it cheap, and it was too good of a deal to pass up. But I'm always keeping an eye out for something else 😊 Keep up the great videos!
Another good one. I’m glad to hear other people have an exhausting time out there. Went for my first mountain bike ride since I’ve been an adult on Monday. I’m 40 and 230lbs. Not fit. Riding my new dolomite alx(thanks). I made it 7km. Thought I was going to die. I’d say an intermediate trail. Was so hard, but so much fun
Can't wait to see what you do on this project. It's definitely an oddball fork and wheel combo with a straight steerer 29 with boost spacing. Great review, I would definitely look into one of these.
Chose to buy this bike because of your review. Would love to see you do some upgrades on this and do some on the channel. I plan to upgrade mine in some capacity after I get it. Looking forward to more videos of this bike.
Nice review brother! I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. I know I'm a bit reluctant to jump on board the 29er train, however if the frame fits the rider you're good as rain! / pun intended / can't wait for geo and specs! Looks like it'll be a good-decent bike.
Got to give credit to hyper. This is pretty huge deal for “budget emtb” industry. This is definitely worth your time to upgrade to level 3. Being that mid drive mountain bikes are typically a lot more expensive, the budget ceiling is a bit higher on this one. Which gives you a lot more room to say “is it worth the upgrades”? Cant wait to see what you do with it. Also when people ask me whats the best budget emtb i might finally be able to give them a reasonable answer.
what would you upgrade to get level 3? the small chainring won't do high speed, be ghost pedaling , i'm looking at rear hub drives 52T from and 11 rear. this has 11 rear i think but tiny front. 36v sucks, 250w sucks, 350 wh, no throttle. Its super cheap on clearance in my area, tempting /750 what should i do? i want this kind of FS frame with throttle, 3 inch tires, 48v 20ah, 35mph, min 30 mile throttle range.
Have you considered trying to review their mid drive step through commuter? I wonder if that model might hold up better to its intended purpose. Trail riding is really tough with bottom budget components. But the street version might look better in comparison. Plus with the step through it may be the right size for a wider range of heights.
My friend recently bought a 21' and 22' trek rail 9.9 xx1. He took the 22' out and he dusted me. I couldn't catch up on climbs, only downhills. And I've been eyeing this hyper for a few weeks now, thanks for the review, now I know what to expect! So new wheels and tires, groupset, and brakes in the works?
This will be an interesting project. That fork will be tricky to upgrade (straight steerer, boost, 100mm travel). Perhaps a lower headset adapter can allow a tapered steerer, but that head tube design makes me think otherwise. The great part of mid-drive systems os that rear wheel upgrades are super easy. I'm sure the Bike Barn has plenty components to elevate this into project status in no time.
I do like how slack the headtube looks though (haha just saw he said 66 degrees). It's not the usual 90 degree headtube angle that seems to be the usual on a Hyper bike. The headtube angle on that Hyper Carbon was ridiculous.
Yeah this would be able to take the ec44 headset to run taper. It might make it look a little funny but it'll work and probably will make it 0.5 degrees slacker
Kev Central. 🤔. Alfine 8 or 11 candidate? Hydraulic Shimano 4 piston brakes or TRP cable actuated hydraulic brakes?? Berzerker Nick just picked up a Blek trek ebike.
This bike pedals more smoothly than my old Luna X1. 19:02 "...you will have accidental shifts." I have banged this bike over a few hundred miles of rocky trails, hard enough to throw the chain. Never had a single accidental shift. Stock tires are lousy (changed mine to Maxxis Minions). Overall this is a decent emtb, especially for the money.
I wonder if this company knows the origin behind SNAFU. SNAFU was a cartoon character in a series of films made by the US military for viewing by draftees during their training during WW2. Private SNAFU always found a way to break the military's rules and get into trouble. The films demonstrate in a humorous way how not following military protocol leads to things like getting blown up, shot, captured or giving away important military secrets. It also is an acronym that stands for "Situation Normal, All Fouled Up" He was a grade A dummy constantly getting into trouble and causing people to get hurt, shot, blown up or captured.
@@KevCentral They're on youtube. Just search private snafu. Believe it or not, the film says something about it being declassified. That means it was classified at one time:)
I like the traditional type of what its called - tube and collar? The welds on that seat stem look like they might be prone to a lot of stress - carrying a whole lot more weight than on a normal mountain bike. Will be interesting to see how it holds up if you do a long-term test.
Nice video Kev, I've never ridden a torque sensor eBike but have owned 3 cadence sensor bikes, two hub drives a 500w and a 1000 watt. And a Schwinn Axum DP that I converted to eBike with a Bafang 750watt mid drive kit and a 10 speed Ltwoo drivetrain. Two things bother me about the hyper, the fact that it's 36v 250 watt, and the absolute worst thing is that freewheel setup with a bolt on wheel, that's going backwards for sure. That being said I'd love to give it a test ride!
Could you do a little how-to on wiring head & tail-lights to this? I couldn't find a wiring diagram for the Vinka e30, but the display does have light switching functionality.
I'm probably gonna pick this one up. Best part is I think I can swap over all the parts on my Goose X2 to get me a wheelset, fork, shifter and brake upgrade right off the rip.
Yes you can. I'm doing that as soon as I get mine. Cost microshift advent X all steel cassette option $150 135 x 10 QR with HG cassette wheel $105. Bike new price $999 on sale for $700 right now
Beautiful and strong cycle. Thank u manufacturing company. Very nice item. But very said. i have not purchasing power this amount.1500 Dollars. I like your cycle. Thanks
Hey Kev this bike is on sale right now for a thousand bucks and I'm in the market for an e-bike and really unless it's I find a good good top quality used one 1000 is the most I would want to spend i bought the tokul from you
Not bad, looks like it could be a pretty nice bike with some minor upgrades. It's always nice to see another e-MTB review, I'm looking forward to see the range tests as well. I tried playing it back a few times put couldn't really tell in daylight, but is it possible the light switch controls the backlight for the LCD display perhaps? That's what it does on my Rockrider EST 100 anyhoe. Cheers Kev.
"Suntour fork is a Suntour fork" - I really am curious if Hyper have thought about going with the Auron. It would probably up the cost between $1800 to $2000, but having a PCS RC2 damped air fork makes this easily worth the cost.
@@KevCentral Sure but still interesting, I know the top of the line bosch 250w motors peak into 800+ watts. I think it gives people a skewed perspective when comparing hub motors (which usually go by peak wattage) to mid drives (which usually go off nominal). A 750w hub motor ebike could be the same power as this 250w mid drive
@@Bengy22 I have a bike with the Bosch Performance CX motor (85 nm) and another with a detuned version of the Shimano EP8 (60 nm) and the Hyper sits right between the two. If I had to use my "seat of the pants dyno" I'd say it puts out 70 nm of torque. The Vinka in the Hyper definitely gets much hotter if you're riding hard compared to those but no issues so far. I'd think that excess heat means wasted efficiency but it seems very comparable to the Shimano.
@@alanpilibosian1979 Vinka has a claimed 80nm so I would be you are spot on. The extra heat is wasted efficiency, but even comparing these motors I bet the bosch is only a few % a most more efficient. At the end of the day all of them have to over heat at 250w for 30 minutes to be compliant with EU laws so efficiency doesn't really matter from a max power standpoint
First day on my new 29" E-Ride MTB and the mid-drive quits on hills with Error Code 15. You experienced this yet? No one in the forums has figured it out.
What is the stand-over height from the top of the junction of the seat and horizontal tubes to the ground? Is there proper clearance to run an 8 speed 11-34 freewheel without changing side spacers? Has anyone had success with going tubeless with these wheels and tires?
I don't understand why these bikes are built with an irregular seatpost size at 30.4. First the Kent Trouville, Giordano's, now this. I wonder if these Hypers are actually made by Kent. The shims required to run a 27.2 dropper aren't long enough to be safe in most of these frames. Also, those tires are knockoff versions of the Kenda Slant 6 which were not the best when they came out over a decade ago.
I feel like a better derailleur and rear wheel wouldn't have increases by much the cost while making it way nicer. Shame about not having bearing for the pivot system. Fork and shock are a good surprise.
I don't understand why they size these so big. The average male height is 5-9 which sounds like is pushing it. And the average female height is 5-4 which is way too small. Since most of these are being sold mail order only they really should offer 2 frame sizes.
Yeah try and find a mid drive full suspension bike for under 1500…of course it’ll have budget components but I’d rather change those out as I go. I think this is a solid bike.
15 hundred bucks I could build electric bike with motors in front and rear wheel I don't like to give up control to a sensor. definitely prefer a wheel motor with throttle
@@KevCentral Those are junk unfortunately. Nice that this has a 110mm 4 bolt. The deckas and snail rings are cheap enough to have handful ready for situations like this. The narrow wide is more important than a clutch der but that would be nice to have too. I think sunrace has a 7-9 speed clutch but I have not seen one yet.
3 inch rear travel?... Maybe a new shock size can get it to 4 inch...but not bad...lil weird with grip shift..the Boost/ non boost is silly. The weight 55lbs. Is kinda light for this price..battery same as other erides is nice ..hub motor is a waste of power, glad to see this. Hyper should work with Kev on next years model. Can't wait to see this thing upgraded ..
the shock linkage mounting directly through the seat tube and the straight steerer tube really ruined the bike for upgrades, and this bike looks like couldve been incredible upgraded
