SPOILERS
2016 was a year of hits and massive disappointments. One of those hits, came in the form of one of the best indie games of the decade. Hyper Light Drifter is both a personal and technical triumph, with unique storytelling, beautiful scenery and challenging combat. Really looking forward to Hyper Light Breaker, and I'm glad that it's going to be different from Drifter.
Also, please check out Dan Farley's composition on the criminally underrated platformer, Himno. I'll provide links in the description.

This game and Hollow Knight both really helped me during a pretty shitty period of my life. Its not perfect but ill never forget this game. Also Hyper Light Breaker looks awesome.

Will never understand how people actually enjoy this game. Got tons of love for the developer, but it's a mess of design, imo. The combat is infuriating, the world is boring and empty, the lack of text is a cheap attempt to fake art, and the controls are needlessly obtuse. And, for a game that gets compared to Zelda so often, it's weird how little it actually is like it. Other than being top-down and having action combat, it doens't share anything in common with Zelda. No proper lore-based world to explore, no adventure to go on, no dungeons, no puzzles, no proper side content... It's weird. I first played Hyper Light Drifter directly after playing Fez and, I'll be honest, the whiplash was probably the worst I've experienced in gaming.

Sometimes, it's just a matter of preference. The story approach just might not be for you. Combat is more manageable if you utilise the unlockable abilities/upgrades. Controls seemed fine when I played, aiming is awkward though. There is plenty of environmental storytelling, but it's left to your own devices. It either works for you or it doesn't. There is Lore, but it's mostly interpretation. I wouldn't say the lack of text is cheap. It's just different. Wordless storytelling is a thing, and quite a few games do it. The game is zelda like in terms of non-linear progression, you can tackle the bosses in any order. The story isn't about an adventure but about buying more time. From the looks of it, the sequel is going to be completely different and looks much better.
