Hyper-Rhythmic Live Looping with the Hologram Microcosm

The core of the Hologram Microcosm is a suite of granular effects, which chop the live input signal into a wide array of fragmented shapes and patterns. The Microcosm also has a phrase looper onboard, and the length of the looper can be locked to the timing of the granular effects. This can create extremely precise and complex webs of layered rhythmic interplay, all built off of a few notes from the live input instrument, which we'll explore here.

Your Microcosm videos are the ONLY ones on YT that truly show the potential of it as an instrument of inhuman mayhem.

Thanks for showcasing some features nobody else seems to have discovered! I loved the glitchy rhythms you came up with, but would it be possible to recreate any of that? In other words, does it have applications for writing songs, or is it just about exploring sound in the moment? Either way, thanks for another great video!
@andrelafosse
@andrelafosse Год назад
Hi! That's a great question. A lot of it depends on the specific algorithms being used. In my experience, some of them are a lot more predictable and repeatable than others. The "Micro Loop" category is relatively predictable, whereas the Glitch category - and the "Interrupt" subset in particular - can be totally nuts. So being selective about which ones to use is a big thing. And/but, I'm really not a song guy. I have a ton of respect for people who do heavily-arranged live looping stuff, but it's not something I'm super interested in, just as a performer. So I'm not a great person to test that notion out, in any case.

@@andrelafosse That makes complete sense. There's something pretty profound underlying the question of "control" in music making, and looping seems to bring this out in particularly interesting ways. Cheers!
@Solochiman
@Solochiman Год назад
Love it! There is no feedback or decay control?
@andrelafosse
@andrelafosse Год назад
Thanks! No Feedback control. There *is* an auto-feedback thing that happens if you leave overdub open for a long time, and the next video will demonstrate that. But it's not something you have any control over.

Nice, this or the soma cosmos for ambient looping?
@andrelafosse
@andrelafosse Год назад
Thanks! Cosmos does "less" stuff, but goes into what it *does* do very deeply. Microcosm doesn't do feedback with its looper, and gives you far less flexibility as far as panning and deliberate stereo imaging. OTOH, I feel like it's easier to get the Microcosm into Cosmos territory, and harder to make the Cosmos do what the Microcosm does. Any particular artists who are touchstones for what you want to do? Have you had a chance to sit down with either of these?
@niloben659
@niloben659 Год назад
@@andrelafosse Thanks, I bought the Microcosm, haven't had much time to dig into it. Yeah the stereo side of the cosmos is interesting, not enough gear let's you pan. How do you find the looping abilities of the Microcosm?
@eddrupz1805
@eddrupz1805 Год назад
Just when I thought I wasn't going to get the microcosm. Is there any truth to the microcosm sounding the same on everything that runs through it? I plan on using synths and samples with it.
@andrelafosse
@andrelafosse Год назад
Hi! I wouldn't say that everything sounds the same. I *would* say that a lot of what I've heard people do with it is in a pretty general amorphous ambient territory, but (as the video attempts to demonstrate) that's definitely not the only thing it's good for. There *are* a few settings that are extremely distinctive, and I could see situations where the character of the effect could be distracting to some people. But, again, I feel that's more down to the way it's used. I definitely wouldn't say that it homogenizes everything that goes through it!
