HyperCard was an early multimedia authoring program created by Bill Atkinson and released by Apple in 1987. In this video I've rounded up 10 interesting HyperCard game stacks to show you!
This is a re-upload of a video I released back in 2019. I've remastered the audio in this release so it sounds better.

HyperCard was actually less limited than it seemed. I once made a RPG engine with fog and lighting effects. It was fairly slow, but used XCMDs to draw color graphics more quickly to the screen using color PICT resources (I want to say it was called DrawPICT or ColorPICT something). Someone actually did make an entire color RPG in HyperCard once, called Chronicle of Ekan, and it's still available online in various archives. I remember talking with the author years ago when it came out--I was so close to getting together my own color HyperCard RPG back in the day, but I graduated from high school and life got too busy. I really wish I had a copy of the stack still. I've played around recently in HyperCard using emulators, and I've toyed with the idea of recreating the game engine. I wonder if there's enough of a vintage Mac hobbyist community left to want to play a new (I guess old, since it was started, conceptually, back in 1998 or so!) HyperCard game. If I finish it, would someone want to play it?

HyperCard was amazingly ahead of its time. It was Visual Basic before Visual Basic and hypertext before the World Wide Web. You could build anything from a recipe file to an office suite to a home automation control system with that thing. Too bad Apple let it basically die on the vine because they couldn't figure out how to make money with it. There are tons of beginner's programming languages, rapid user interface prototyping frameworks, and game engines out there now but none of them capture the simplicity, elegance, and utter potential that HyperCard represented.

Should have sold the program separately and only offer a demo built-in.

I grew up in the early 00s, the elementary school IT guy/computer teacher was a Mac guy. We were still using HC for various lessons on eMacs and G3 iMacs

I remembered learning Hypercard in middle school and I made so many silly little unfinished adventure games with it. My favorite Hypercard games that I still remember are the original Myst and The Manhole, but I also totally remember Cosmic Osmo.

Brilliant! There's still room for something like HyperCard.

Technically, Flash could be thought of as the spiritual successor to HyperCard. The technology wasn't great, don't get me wrong, but it followed the same principles.

Great video. I had to learn HyperCard in high school in the 90s. I never realized it was possible to make games like Tetris in it.

All I did was make a simple animation of a creature blinking its eyes with a two card stack. You press the button and it just switches to the second card for a second before switching back. Yeah that was it. (I didn't have a Mac, so this was just me experimenting with a Mac I had access to for a little bit.)

In middle school, I use to stay after school as long as the library was open to use Hypercard and make games. You're right, it was magical.

Holy crap, gruz has another channel?! With Hypercard videos?! Just when I thought he couldn't be more awesome!! Before I ever learned any type of programming, I used Hypercard to make little "flip" animations; like the kind you'd make on a stack of sticky notes. We'd draw a scene, then make a slight change on the next card, then again on the next, etc. On the first card, we'd put a button that executed a simple "go to next card until the end" script. My sister and I used to make tons of those!!

Oh man. I only ever used Hypercard for game stuff, but there was a lot of fun to be had. I got a real kick out of the haunted house as a kid!

I made a game in hyper card... i called kill'em (i am huge Metallica fan he he he) it just spawn a random card with one enemy in a random position(same background) and if you don't click on the enemy in one seccond (it was a button to the next random card) you just die (go to game over card, because he shoots you ).. it was really simple but that was my first complete game.
