That's true. That fact is linked to inharmonicity. There's less inharmonicity in bass section by not having to make that thick bass strings. Short piano : short but thick bass strings (looser tension) = more inharmonicity. Longer piano: longer but thinner bass strings (higher tension) = less inharmonicity. The amount of inharmonicity affects pianos sound quality quite a lot.

Thanks for the explanation, I was trying to figure out what difference the longer string meant. I love the sound and certainly the lower strings are more in keeping with the middle at least.

I love how the bass notes ring out on a nice piano with lovely resonant bass tones however I have no way of knowing how they sound on this particular piano as I am listening to it via inexpensive small speakers which are likely to be incapable of conveying the piano's timbre to my ears with a great deal of accurately. The audio pre-amp on my computer's system board and the amplifier between the computer and the speakers, isn't likely to do a very good job either, of enabling my sound reproduction system' to have fidelity to the sound of piano. I can say the piano looks quite nice though- my video is 720p. Rather unusual layout of the pins in the pinblock. I don't have a good view of the layout of the strings. I can't see the bridge. I can't see any soundboard. I can't tell if there is any metal being used to help keep string tension from bending wood and changing relative tension on the strings as they are brought up to pitch. I will say I often prefer the sound of older pianos, made before the age of one-piece cast-iron plates, to the sound of modern pianos with cast-iron plates. Usually not as loud. Tone is less strident. More of a "singing" tone. But I can't tell if this piano has metal support for string tension or not, and if so whether it is one-piece cast-iron or multiple pieces. And because I have only little speakers, I am quite unable to appreciate the instrument's nuances of timbre. I enjoyed the performance though. I've tuned lots of different kinds of pianos. Everything else being the same, generally the longer the strings the easier it is to get a good tuning and more you can count on the piano to have a stable tuning. So I looked forward to hearing from this long piano.

On a television there's very little to tell apart from a normal piano sound. Could you tell us how it is different in person. Eg more projection? Thanks!

@carlocondoluci574 I actually moddled on an old Bösendorfer I saw a picture of years ago in a book 1870 something made for an empress. The scaling and soundboard could be better but it works, most people don't listen to these recordings on a good sound system. Piano is one thing, recording is entirely another!

yes! Bach's music is the definition of timeless. No matter how you arrange and re-arrange it, no matter the instrument, it still sounds like Bach and it sounds just as good as when it first premiered!

Most digital piano’s on their own have very silly speakers though. To hear the lower frequencies properly you’ll need to connect some large front speakers or a subwoofer (a properly adjusted one - not like a sub in the trunk of a kid his subcult car).

@@Engineer9736 I know, I never use built-in speakers on e-pianos. I'm talking about when listening with good over-ear headphones or an amp. I play an Electro 6 which doesn't have any built-in speakers. I play it out of a Roland KC-400

@@dr0117 Well of course the center frequency will be the same. If you wanted a lower tone, hit a lower key. This cleans up the muddy "roar" that's typical with low bass on regular sized pianos.

I agree but would it sound like it does when played live? I thought the distinctive sound of a piano was due to the resonance of the played strings with the unplayed strings and you wouldn't get that if the roots and harmonics of the different keys were separated from interaction with each other.

@@benmcdonnell4167 that's true although there are some companies pushing sampling to its limits with some trickery and some mixing it with physical modeling. Still, a good sampled instrument is still worth pursuing with this amazing piano I think.

​@@benmcdonnell4167A good software version of a piano takes into account all the harmonics and resonance that you are talking about. It gets really complicated using different versions of physical modeling, sampling, and convolution systems. The general consensus is that in a live piano only setting there are only a few exceptionally expensive digital pianos that are equivalent. For recordings on the other hand...Digital is nearly indistinguishable from a recorded unit.

turn up to 1080p and listen on good headphones and youtube's audio is pretty good. High bitrate aac is basically indistinguishable from flac. This used to be an issue, but youtube is not compressing to 128kpbs mp3 any more (although audio is re-encoded for the lower quality settings; you have to make sure you're watching the video at the highest quality to get the high bitrate audio)

You tube does whatever it does to reduce file size which save them money and bandwidth, and when the file size is reduced things are LOST, its anyone's guess what, but suffice to say the quality goes downhill @@codegeek98

Technically it’s mostly the change in the thickness/gauge of the strings that allows the bass notes to resonate so clearly. This piano can use much thinner bass strings because the ridiculous length of it lets the tension and note be preserved. Thicker strings add more inharmonic notes that conflict with the underlying fundamental. In other words, the thicker a string is, the less it acts like a string.

That's the longest piano I've ever seen .

My uncle played on that organ when he was at Waitaki c1917. He once vowed he would play the Internationale as a voluntary if the legendary head, Milner ("The Man") mentioned a particular incident. He did, and he did. Uncle Tom went on to lecture in music at Wellington Teachers College and inspired many students with a love of classical music.

Our electronic devices (smartphones, tablets and computers) cannot convey the sound faithfully enough, one has to be there in person ! 🎹🎹🎹

@@juerbert1 I'm sure. Check the piano risers that Acoustic Fields has, it will drastically improve the sound since there's a lot of energy that goes directly to the floor below which cause SBIE problems.. it'll definitely help out in the low octaves.

That would change the weight and feel of playing the lower notes. It might be possible, and someone might prefer that, but it’s unusual and unusual increases cost

also, the comparative mass of the strings in a shorter piano and this one would produce different sonic profiles, which I would expect to mean longer resonance, losing crispness in the bass.

Electronic power assistance might be required to give a more normal feel to the keyboard. Otherwise the energy required for the longer strings might strain resources.

...It probably adds to the sound to place both microphones at the base end strings of the piano and none at the treble, can also be edited after recording as well.

The point of having such long strings is that they don't have to be thick like short bass strings.

@Corby Dipsen I don't claim to know anything about a 20' long piano, just bass of both upright and guitar style. I could use the same gauge on all four strings with different tension and I like to lean in that direction with a set that has a close ratio of gauges. These strings must be custom wound for that length so the gauge can be in a range. High tension has a crisper attack with less give in the string. Unless you built this piano, you could be a little more decent. There is room for both yours and JV's statement, (setting aside the insults)

It's an interesting piano, it's totally unique hearing the stereo spread of the string layout something I can't capture in recordings

i noticed nobody else mentioned the high notes. this gives me confidence that might not be the only one that thought the treble was not pleasant.

There is one greater joy, though; whether a life led in tears, joy or both brings you to your death bed, know this: there is much better of a life after the death of earthly life. My troubles has led me to writing poetry, whether or not it's "literature of artistic merit" I do not know, but there are a few (unpublished - probably not worth being published) books of poetry or poetry compilations of me, that I compiled. These poems are the beautiful product of ugly processes.

Hyperion is a superb pianist. I also hope to make more Alexander pianos!

As a stagehand and sound guy who has moved many a piano that presents an interesting challenge to move, but I think its lovely flatter sides (as opposed to the more "Ruebenesque" Grands curves) would be much easier to build a road case around - I think it should rest on a long dolly, long side down (with a generous number of heavy duty caster wheels appropriately spaced underneath that) and panels that interlock with the dolly board and each other to cover it. Also consider how the piano will be gently tilted over from playing to transporting - a custom ez-tilt or similar would be very functional for this. Its overall length alone would certainly limit some of the halls it could be brought into, but it would be incredible in a hall like the Pike's Peak Center in Colorado Springs or something similar. If you need a drawing of what I'm visualizing I'd love to draw it for you. Brilliant work on that indeed!

Rubbish! I get a *_perfect_* rendition through the pair of 1" speakers in my laptop! But you're right - that piano is a beast. I see on the RU-vid "invitations" to the right of my screen, the Chris Maene straight-strung concert grand, which appears to be similar to this one. I had never seen one before. Are there many of them? Is it, perhaps, a new trend in the manufacture of concert grands?

Theres literally no break in the scaling- as in no change from unwound tri chords to wound tri or bi chords.... copper wound strings, although we are all used to them adds alot of extra sound to the string...
