Can you relate to experiencing pain on a higher scale than the average person? As a person with autism you can be hypersensitive to pain or hyposensitive. I'm going to talk about my experience as an autistic person who is hypersensitive to pain. Tell me how you experience pain as an autistic person.

Yes, I am very hypersensitive to internal pain, such as GI issues, migraines, and muscle pain. I go to a chiropractor every week. I am hyposensitive to bruising & cuts--sometimes I don't even realize I hurt myself. Today I realized again how bright lights cause headaches and eye pain.

I think I have high pain tolerance to some kinds of pain and low pain tolerance to other kinds of pain. It also might depend on what state of mind I am in. When disassociating or angry I don't feel pain as much.

I'm definitely on the hypersensitive side of the pain tolerance issue. I don't think that this will be helpful but my way dealing with medical appointments is to do everything I can to avoid them altogether as I have had traumatic experiences in the past. For my part I do try to live healthfully.I can really relate to the whole hypersensitivity issue in more ways than one.

I've had pain since my teenage years, and no one would take me seriously. So I always thought I must have a low intolerance, even after many diagnosis, I thought I was 'weak' (which is such wrong thinking! If you have low pain tolerance, that's not your fault AT ALL!) until a few years ago when I dislocated my shoulder, broke my ankle and sprained my wrist at the animal shelter and was being carried into an ambulance ... I was humming a song and the paramedics looked at me and were like 'wow, your pain tolerance, never seen anything like it! With these injuries, the toughest of men will be crying and screaming'. But the thing with living with years of pain and trying to participate in normal life is that you have to find your own methods to cope with the pain and in my case it is music and humming songs. Pain is such a personal experience ... I also have no clue how to talk about it with doctors.

It sounds like you have learned how to adapt to it. I remember when I used to go to a pain clinic years ago for my chronic back pain, they tried to teach us how to use deep breathing or mediation. Thanks for commenting here....

Hope you're feeling better, Jenny! I'm hyposensitive to physical stimuli, but I'm highly sensitive to lighting which may cause debilitating migraines. I'm sorry that some us feel pain more profoundly. My son seems a bit more hypersensitive and I feel bad for him. He has a particular sensitivity to sound, but I feel like it may be more pronounced.

From someone who just got over back pain last week I am sorry you are not feeling great right now. I am hypo sensitive to pain until it gets soo painful it's all I can think about. Local anasthetic doesn't work on me and the dentist needed to give me the strongest local they don't normally use it often and said it would wear off in about 5 to 7 hours and I was fine in 3. And am hyper sensitive to migrane now. And the chronic pain in my feet is OK until it gets really painful and then it's unbearable. When I had my chest drain in 2020 because of phneumonia the local they used didn't work and I was hyper sensitive to the pain of them cutting into my chest cavity through the badly infected lining etc...I felt everything and I screamed until it was done....I was in soo much pain I slept sitting up in the chair with my head on a pillow on the table that was placed in front of me. 😊

Thank you for this - I had wondered about this topic. I think I struggle with pain that occurs quickly, but if it builds up slowly I just don't seem to notice it as much. Another overlapping issue may be that some male doctors tend to be dismissive of women's pain.

Found it: "A new government inquiry will examine women’s pain and treatment. How and why is it different?" 1st Feb, 2024 on The Conversation website (which is based on journos and academics working together), written by some Uni of South Australia people. There are a few other articles on this topic there. "Women’s pain is often not believed - here’s how to make your voice heard when seeking help" 12th Sep, 2023 "Women’s pain is routinely underestimated, and gender stereotypes are to blame - new research" 9th April, 2021

I'm very sensitive to pain AND being put under. It's a serious consideration of whether to endure the procedure or endure the aftermath of the drugs. 😵

This is very interesting. As a rule, I don’t feel pain that much. I often notice cuts and bruises on my arms and legs and I have no idea how I got them. But I hate the dentist! I need numbing just for a teeth cleaning…sometimes two injections!

For me, sometimes I feel pain so intensely but other times I don't feel it at all. I broke my knee cap a few years back and didn't even realise it was broken til I went to the hospital the next day - I just thought it was some kind of sprain......

Its complicated. Some types of pain i cant handle...other i dont feel much like getting on IV or anything with needles. Getting a cathether one due to a severe bladder infection seriously sucked as i had it for 1 week...i felt the muscles clenching around the tube it sucked. For dental work they need to give me a truck of anaesthesia. Mind you im not afraid of the dentist or blood at all. Im just sensitive in some places and not in others. I have ankylosing spondilitis so theres always some joint or part of the spine hurting so it further jumbles the pain signals. Im writting this on 2 muscular relaxants and 1 pain pill...i think a lot of people would be knocked out 😂 but this is strictly my perscription. Im not addicted and i never take more than advised. I hate pills but its necessary...i was melting down all the time before because this was out of control.

I am very sensitive to pain and I’m very scared of the dentist and even getting a filling. I won’t eat anything sugary at all like chocolate or sweets in case I need a filling. I take eating healthy to an extreme degree because of my OCD.

These stories are so sad. Most people assume everyone is like them, so assume you must be exaggerating, or complaining for attention, or just plain making it up in your head!!!! Funnily enough I am EXTREMELY SENSITIVE TO COLD. I am skilled and ticketed Journeyman tradesmen in a very tough industry and am battered and bruised daily but am most sensitive to aches and pains and cold breezes and the feeling of sweaty clinging clothes that makes me crazy!!! A bit of a weird dichotomy. But sensitive I am!!!

Yep. The pain gets so bad my body just shuts down. I haven't been able to walk for 3 days because of coughing and sneezing from allergies herniated a back disc again. Nothing anyone can do for it. My bowels don't work very well either so my gut is always bloated, painful and cramping. I also get bone fractures but no one knows why.

I didnt realiize I broke my foot for awhile. Not sure how tto explain that better, just our different paths.

Either hypo or hyper, depends on what part of my body. A "normal" PAP-test at a gynacologist is very painful for me, but if I break a bone I got diagnosed with it days later. It's a bit strange.

Speaking of pap....I'm going Tuesday for that. Ugh. I feel like I am hyposensitive to medicine though. Medicines that usually knock people out like benadryll and muscle relaxers, don't do that for me.
