Low Thyroid (hypothyroidism) affects millions of people around the globe. Which medication you take for it can make all the difference in how you feel and perform.
Hypothyroid medication choices are often not given to patients by their doctors, but they should be. Different medications work differently for different people, one synthetic size does NOT fit all.
Whether desiccated or synthetic, there are pro's/con's to each different medicine. Only by reading about them, and trying them, will you know which one makes you feel your best.

I'm a Chiropractor in Gilbert Arizona. When my Cholesterol was high, I argued that isn't the only measure of heart health, and NO I'm not taking a statin. I've lowered my total cholesterol, triglycerides and raised my HDL with lifestyle changes. Now I'm going to do the Carnivore diet with IF to get off my thyroid meds to prove to my endocrinologist that it can be done.

I was on Synthroid for years - and always had to take Brand Necessary because I didn't do well with generics. A few years ago I was switched to Armour Thyroid. What a difference that made! My hair doesn't fall out, my skin doesn't itch all the time. I can lose weight and sleep! My doc switched facilities - so I was forced by insurance to see someone else - and they REFUSED to prescribe Armour.. so I paid out of network for a while, then got a new job with amazing insurance and I can now see my awesome Dr!

Hi, i was diagnosed in July 2000 with sub-acute Thyroiditis. After suffering from sever hyper thyroid for a few months it shifted quite sharply to hypo thyroid. In October of 2000, my internist in Calgary put me on synthroid. I saw him last in 2006, and even then, he said it would be best to keep my TSH levels at.02 or less. I have been "stable" for many years now, at 125 mcg per day. I started keto in May of 2017. I GAINED 25 lbs! I was hardcore for 4 months, then slacked off of the 10 cups of veggies per day, as per Dr. Berg. I gave up for a few months after seeing 3 different doctors. :,( In January, i went back to keto, having learned a few new things, and now i do proper IF 16/8 as well. I have been keto for 3.5 weeks now, and have not lost a SINGLE POUND!! Im 54, as of last Saturday, 5,7" and in reasonably good health, other than my thyroid issue. I weigh 183 and need to be down to at least 138-140. I have been skinny my whole life, good healthy diet/lifestyle, and i dont binge or eat for emotional reasons. Im not a fussy eater, and no allergies, either, but my son is severe celiac, so we have been completely gluten free for 4 years already. Im in menopause now for about a year, and no real lasting symptoms. Yay! BUT my weight issue basically started in 2009 when i was prescribed antidepressants because of a traumatic experience our family went through. I was on and off them 3 times in about 4 years, and i have been off of them for 5 years already. My weight has been completely stable at 183 since November last year. I am so discouraged now. Nothing seems to work. What does one do with sub-acute Thyroiditis? Any chance i can get off these meds or try something different? I was told the virus that triggered the Thyroiditis and the subsequent attack basically blew out my thyroid. Im told only 2 out of every 100 people diagnosed with sub-acute Thyroiditis remain on meds for life. Is this true? Not much info out there, so i keep going for blood tests every year and get a year's prescription. And i stay fat. Not much hope left...

Recently had bloodwork done and my TSH is 14, normal T4 so my doc wants to put me on thyroid meds. I asked my doctor and he said he's only had 2 patients who tried the natural version, both later ended up on synthetic anyway. Then again I mentioned selenium to my doctor and he seems totally oblivious that low selenium can cause thyroid issues. So I was started on 25mcg synthroid and have to do bloodwork in 6 weeks to see how it's going, I'm going to try to also reduce my hypothyroidism myself between now and then by supplementing brazil nuts for selenium, seaweed for iodine, and meditation to reduce my stress and anxiety, plus as close to gluten and dairy free / keto diet as I can get. He explicitly said he's starting me on the lowest possible dose and doesn't expect it to do anything yet, so if I can significantly reduce my TSH myself then I can show him a more natural approach may be possible. He seems very quick to write off the possibility of it going into remission and says he's only ever had one patient come off thyroid medication once they went on, and its for life.

Interesting topic. I had a total thyroidectomy years ago. I studied the thyroid drugs at that time then asked my endocrinologist for natural dessicated thyroid pills instead of the synthetic, she flatly refused to prescribe them for me. So I informed her I would follow up with my PCP for the meds. The endo got to him before me. Supposedly i was uncooperative, non-compliant, and as I had decided to just go to my PCP for my thyroid medication needs, she obviously placed my PCP in the middle of what she viewed as a conflict. I think he was sympathetic but he wouldn't prescribe natural meds after getting an ear full from her. I knew that trying natural thyroid was worth a try but no one would let me so now my health is wrecked. I believe that I could have been much healthier had they only let me. Obease, fatty liver, high cholestetol, depression, statins, antidepressants, stress. Overwhelmed. I'm 64 years old and feel my life is over. Hoping for a chance in another life to be healthy and happy... So much for patient rights.

@@G.G.8GG I agree with you. I'm switching my endocrinologist I'm going to see a new doctor this Friday. Which happens to be tomorrow. And I want a referral to a new endocrinologist. A lot of these people suck and they're not good doctors. If you don't listen to the patient then what's the purpose of you. And right now I'm taking this new medication and I'm starting to feel better back to my old self again. But they tried to rush me into making two decisions that I was not going to make. I feel like you shouldn't just let the doctor pressure you into radioactive iodine treatment or surgery until you know what you going to do after those two things happen. The first thing is radioactive iodine treatment is going to kill your thyroid and then on top of that if you get surgery your thyroid is gone forever there's nothing you can do to come back from that. It's people out here I've had thyroidectomies who didn't even need it they could have just lived with taking medication and having a nodule on their thyroid but know these doctors wanted to just take it away so I can give them medication for the rest of their life. It's really a scary boat you're in when it comes to these doctors which is why I never make a decision based off what they tell me I do my own research. They diagnosed me with hyperthyroidism about a month now and I've been taking medication in the first thing they wanted me to do is do radioactive iodine treatment and I said no. I want to go see a whole another doctor and got medication because I wasn't going to jump and make a big decision that I might not even need if I could just take the medication for six months or a year and it brings by levels down to normal

I have given up on going to the doctor for my thyroid medicine. It was a nightmare getting switched over to dessicated thyroid and then my dosage was too low or too high according to TSH results. Also no insurance companies cover these medications which is very frustrating. I ended up having to get 3 different dosages to alternate a 90mg dosage and 75mg to please my nurse practitioner. But I always felt better on a 90mg dosage. She would not budge. So now I take Thyroid Gold which makes me feel amazing. I won't test anymore, I will trust my symptoms or lack of. Either my body wants me there or I've hit a plateau, but I feel fine. Not sure of the difference between Hashimoto's and low thyroid, but no doctor has used the "H" word for my low thyroid. I had a great outcome with synthroid, about 2 decades ago but when I was told my liver enzymes were slightly elevated, I felt that the medication and diet contributed. Long story short, I took myself off the synthroid and now take all the supplements and food that are recommended for bolstering the gland. The only symptom I have now is sensitivity to cold.

Further problems when moving to a new state & later having a doctor retire so had to go with a new one, then another because they would a) write the script for NDT but treated me with disdain or b) treated me with disdain & refused to write it. I now have an endocrinologist who will write it but refuses to give me the dose I can function on, so I have supplement as best I can with an internet product & tell her I do it. Frustrating! Hey, from Canada! Love learning about this new way of life! Thank you! I have hypo and am on 75 Synthroid. I can’t tell that it helps much as I still have symptoms. In Canada, the Medical Services Plan will not do further thyroid testing IF the T4 is within range. My T4 tests in the lower T4 range, hence no further testing. ERFA is available here, but it seems a huge jump to go to 30grams which is the lowest dose available. Do you have any suggestions? Btw, I started Keto 5 days ago, have hypertension, hoping to reverse that and not become diabetic. Also, I’m 63, postmenpause, full hysterectomy, Plus morbidly obese; weight loss has been a lifelong battle. Thanks again for your part in changing lives!

Hello Dr. Berry. I would first like to say that your videos are both informative and enjoyable. I am newbie to the keto lifestyle. I have a few questions, which I can’t seemed to get answered elsewhere. 1. Does caffeine blunt the effects of ketosis by increasing cortisol levels, which can raise insulin levels? And 2. Will excessive amounts of protein trigger GNG, thus hindering the work it takes to enter and stay in ketosis? I look forward to your insight. Thank you for your time.

Well, our doctors don’t care other wise we wouldn’t have to ask such question. No dialogue at all, just prescribe this and that. Keep you not dead, but depending on them. Lets face it, we are the only ones who used to believe that they want us well. I wonder if their precious child is close to dying, would they be that inefficient and detached?

Armour is the only thing that works for my hypo. But I cannot for the life of me understand why it is that when my labs are all over the board, I feel great. When they are ‘normal’ , I feel like 💩. My docs always say my T3 is too high, but I feel great. When they look at my labs and lower my dose, I feel like crap! WITH high T3, my blood pressure is normal, weight stabilized (at 20 lbs over but I’ll live with it), no shakiness, and actually I’m still lifeless to be honest, but it’s better than comatose on a lower dose! I’ve been there done that. I know what’s best for me. Although I’ve FINALLY found a doctor who listens to me, recently…….i appreciate the docs in the world that listen to the patient more than they listen to the labs. And yes- I get 15,000-20,000 steps in a day, drink water, eat right, etc.
