The walls balls are the 8th and final functional exercise stations in HYROX and here are five technique tips to help you go faster on this station in your next hyrox race.
Firstly ensuring you are vertical aligned loading, receiving and throwing that wall ball from the mid line of your body is key to completing this exercise station efficiently, to do this we need to think about where we are standing to throw and receive the ball, we don’t want to be so close to the wall ball target that the ball is coming down behind or on top of our head, but equally not stood so far away from the target that with each catch of the ball we are off balance and leaning too far forward. A quick helpful rule of thumb is being stood an arm’s length away from the target.
Tip number 2 simple put is to remember we start standing tall, for the first rep we must pick the ball up from the ground and fully extend into a standing tall position, before dropping down into the first squat.
Then drop low as we go to avoid receiving any no reps, making sure that at the bottom of the squat that our knee is below parallel to ensure we are hitting a adequate depth.
If during your training you realise that your mobility is restricting you getting into a low enough squat position, do build in some hip, hamstring and glute mobility drills into your training to help you get into a stronger, deeper bottom position in your squat - I will provide a link to a follow along mobility routine up here and in the video description.
Finding a steady speed and pacing that works for you is important and will help you ensure you are running your own hyrox race that plays to strengths, at this point of the race fatigue will be setting in and to finish strong we need to find our own rhythm for this station.
Remember Break it up, whilst many of the elite level hyrox athletes will go through the 75 or 100 wall balls unbroken for most of us we will need to build in short period of rest and recovery through the exercise station, having in mind a rough number of reps and sets you want to break your walls up into, can be a helpful marker as to know when to take your breaks.
