HYTORC Porsche Centerlock Wheel Torque Gun

Have you ever tried to remove a centerlock wheel before? No? Well, it takes a lot of force to remove and tighten what is essentially a giant center lug nut that's tightened to 440ft-lbs. I have to put all my weight on a breaker bar and have someone push the brake pedal and hold the steering wheel just to remove my front wheels.
This is where the guys at HYTORC come in with the modified LiON electric torque multiplier! Joel from HYTORC came down for a visit to show me one of the prototype units they've custom programmed to tighten centerlocks to Porsche spec. Along with the LiON torque gun programming they've developed their own custom centerlocks which allow easy one-handed centerlock installation and removal all by yourself.
If you have a car or multiple with centerlocks I know this solution is going to be a worthwhile investment! We need to create some buzz behind this to light a fire under HYTORC & let them know they have a market!

First I was like "how you gonna hold that with that much torque?" As soon as he mentioned "outside part that doesn't spin" it clicked. Brilliant. I dont own a Porsche, but I totally understand the struggle Its like undoing and redoing axle nuts each time you want to take your wheel off + the added bonus of car being in the air.

Sign me up! The increased efficiency at the track would be an amazing time saver as we centerlock guys find the efficiency now at the track by doing a step in the process for all wheels then going to the next step for all wheels and so on. Loosen all centerlocks, change all wheels, paste all centerlocks, install all wheels, torque all centerlocks, loosen 60 degrees all centerlocks, final torque all centerlocks. This reduces the number of times you need to change from the breaker bar to the torque bar on the Precision Instruments wrench but it is definitely a process as you say and that damn paste always ends up on you no matter how careful you are! I still love the centerlocks and have more confidence in them from a safety perspective then traditional lugs but they DO take more work than traditional lugs, that is until this tool arrived. Not a whiny Porsche guy thing but the centerlock is actually a bolt and not a nut since they have male threads on the outside of the centerlock bolt and it goes into female threads on the hub.

I love those Hytorc and the only improvement I can think of would be a different way to unlock that pushing any 1 of the 3 buttons on the rear of the gun. It's very awkward in many positions and tight locations to squeeze the trigger and reach hand across hand to mash the button to unlock so it will start to turn. Otherwise it is an absolute perfect tool and I am speaking from experience as a Pipefitter using the Hytorc gun to torque flange bolts.

I work for Ford motor co and that’s exactly how tooling is set up in our plants now except they’re called Stanley DC motors. Same exact way of torquing something down. Everything from .8NM to 1000nm is torqued down by electric motors no more air tools or impacts. GM and FCA/Stalantis are the same exact way and I’m assuming German and Japanese manufacturers use Stanley as well. Pretty cool technology and it doesn’t beat up assemblers hands.

There are well over 30,000 Porsche 911 road cars out in the world (every GT2, GT2RS, GT3, GT3RS and GTS since the 997.2) with OEM center lock wheels. Plus there are the Porsche specialist service, tire and race shops that would want one. Given that you've already got the device and its programming, and have the tooling to make the adapter and new wheel nuts, there's surely a case for putting these into production! Cool tool, but using the simple wood clamp - as you mention - but against a 90degree angle fitting screwed into the harness mounts, you can easily apply enough braking force to both loosen and tighten the 442 lb ft with the car in the air. I swap all wheels in 20 minutes that way. No issue at all. But still, the tool is coooool, although it's a bit more MAN to work with the 4-5 ft breaker and torque wrench. Never had the issue with front wheels turning, that you mentioned

Have HyTorc develop reaction arms for various bolt patters of normal wheels. The reaction arm can engage the neighbor wheel stud like a socket. Then you have a tool to install and remove all wheels. This will greatly open the market. It will help justify GT owners, many of whom own other cars. It won't be limited to just Porsche cars.
@HYTORCNJ
@HYTORCNJ 3 года назад
Yes, HYTORC is actively testing some reaction fixtures that would make it possible to operate OEM center lock nuts by reacting on the wheel spokes. These require significant forces to be applied to the wheel spokes and thus they are making sure that they can be designed to be safe for both the operator and the wheels. Stay tuned for such an offering.
@greyhound707
@greyhound707 3 года назад
@@HYTORCNJ To expand the applications (and consumer market) of this tool I'm suggesting reaction arms be developed for traditional 4 and 5 bolt wheels. As a typical wheel bolt torque is around 110 ft-lbs is should be possible to anchor the reaction arm at a neighbor wheel bolt and not on a wheel spoke. Then there is no chance to damage the wheel finish.

the 6ft bar, that high of a torque spec, and 2pc nut is Diesel Truck technology. strangely this is really a missed opportunity by Porsche themselves, but yeah i can see the issue with sideloading at the hub center (it's where all the force is present once the wheel is back on and the vehicle is in use) if you've spec'd your GT2/GT3 with the sweet OE Magnesiums. with those you want to be as delicate/precise as possible (actually even more so than Carbon). if its any consolation, for the price, this tool "system" naturally has application on Ferraris and McLarens, and who ever else specs centerlocks. even those fancy MV Agusta and Ducati motorcycles costing $50-$100 grand can benefit from this.

Great tool! Great quality! I believe that if you can afford the car you can afford the tool no problem. However, how many high class Porsche owners actually work on their own car? All the gear heads do but the majority of Porsche owners are older and in it for the class and prestige of the brand. This tool is definitely worth 5k, but realistically to get these things sold quickly it needs to be around 1,500 - 2,000. I could be wrong but idk, but what I do know is that this is a great tool.
