The 2022 Porsche 911 GT3's 4.0L Naturally Aspirated Boxer Six-Cylinder Engine

The new Porsche 911 GT3 engine revs to 9,000 RPM. The 4.0L boxer six-cylinder is naturally aspirated, producing 502 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque. The engine is packed with clever features including individual throttle bodies, two resonance valves, rigid valve train, DLC-coated rocker arms, large-bore cylinders, and a dry sump oil system with seven pickup locations, ensuring proper oil flow under track conditions. The 4.0L has seen numerous updates since its introduction in the 2011 GT3 RS 4.0, and has been used in subsequent 911 GT3 variants since.
The 2022 GT3 has also lapped the Nurburgring in just under seven minutes! Thanks to weight reduction through material selection such as carbon fiber reinforced plastic, titanium engine components, and special glass, the curb weight is kept low. Handling is improved with a new front and rear suspension, completely redesigned from the standard 911. Grip is maximized with Michelin Cup 2 R tires, and significantly increased downforce over the previous GT3.

At the age of 58 I have never owned one, but it has been my favourite car since I was a kid. I bought myself my first non daily driver a couple of years ago and it’s a 2017 Corvette Grand Sport. I’m not a “track guy” or even someone who’s pretends they can drive better than someone else. The thing is, I will buy a GT3 or GT3 RS in the next few years, but unfortunately I won’t be able to buy a new one, because I’m not a part of special list of people who get them.

I'm guessing this is where the magic happens. Years ago, I did my degree in real-time systems engineering. One of the limitations was that's often sense/sample, process, act, repeat. Even with state-of-the art DSPs, the costs were very high, and performance limited. Now the silicon's improved, so have sensors so modern engine management systems have a lot more 'horsepower' to do complex computing @9000rpm. Personally, I think one of the most fun technology innovations driven by extra compute power is the ability to have multiple driving modes that remap the engine management depending on whether you want economy, or power.

If you're considering a 996 911 or a 986 Boxster, don't. It'll be a disappointing Porsche, the M96 engine is frankly a terrible design. The 981 Boxster and Cayman are dropping down pretty fast, and if you find an S model with a manual you're golden. The only modifications they need is a complete, engine back exhaust system, a remap, and all those will push nearly 375 hp at the crankshaft, which is exactly the amount of power you want for the public roads. It's amazing. The _only_ thing that makes me sad about this car is that there's still no mis-shift protection for the manual. In a car that's obviously intended for the track, that seems like a huge missed opportunity. When you're pulling significant Gs and trying to shift as fast as possible, mis-shifts are a possibility; you can be as careful as you want, but the risk is there that you'll have one eventually-and in a GT3, that'd be tragic. There could be an electro-mechanical lockout of lower gears when the current wheel speed would put the car over redline in that gear. The added cost wouldn't be worth it for your average econobox, but for a manual GT3 that's designed for the track, well, it's something I'd really like to see.

Very simply the bottom of the wing is more important for generating downforce than the top is so putting the struts on the top instead of the bottom generates more downforce because much less of the air on the bottom is disrupted.
