I’m a staunch VW fan. Couldn’t wait for the Mk8 to come out. (As I missed the boat on the final Mk7 R) BUT having tested the I30N and the Mk8 the only things in my mind separating them is fun vs cost. Annnnd the I30N seems to win on both accounts. If you haven’t tested one, I recommend it. It is surprisingly good.
@@nickgentile4574 totally agree Nick. I own a Mk5 GTI and have a soft spot for all VW hot hatches but this updated N is seriously capable, loads of fun and a fair whack cheaper…
@@351tgv Best in class in what way? It has the worst transmission in the segment, it isn't the most powerful, it isn't the quickest in a straight line or on a track, and the interior is typical Ford. It's not really cheaper either, with the prices going up since the RS production was stopped. In fact, if you prefer the manual, the base i30N is still the cheapest car in the segment.
There is another awesome ozzie review from "Ross Reviews". He is so enthusiastic. This one is very good too. I just don't understand something. Australia/Europe gets i30N. But U.S. gets Veloster N. Why ? Who decided that ?
Having owned an I30N, the other good thing is Hyundai really did a good job engaging with the fans and the community is pretty good. Would really recommend people to try it, or own it.
Great review. I picked mine up 4 weeks ago and haven’t stopped smiling. I have the same Engine Red DCT Premium with S/Roof. I was so close to going with a Focus ST, but this is way more exciting and fun. Keep up the good work…..
Great buy Ant. And excellent decision in the spec. I reckon I’d go for exactly that too, or maybe the white… You made the right call over the Focus ST. It’s a good car but the i30 is a great one
I don’t know a lot about cars but my girlfriend really wanted this car so we’ve put our name on the waiting list for a manual white with sunroof, I only drive auto so am looking forward to learning the skill of manual driving and enjoying this car!
@@alexinwood2723 i went for top spec premium w/ sunroof. I picked the auto because of the extra saftey features. I can drive manual but i fell in love with the dct when i test drove it.
@@Damo1998 nice. Premium with sunroof is the one I’d choose too. Having spent more time in the DCT since, I’m 50:50 on which transmission I’d go! Both are excellent. Hope you enjoy the car!
@@WheelsAustralia Big difference between the 2, i feel the preface-lift was the "beta" version of what Hyundai was visioning for the I30N. The face-lift really feels like what Hyundai wanted to release from the get go. I went the Non Premium DCT in Shadow Grey, i didn't want a sunroof so unfortunately i miss out on the new seats, but the standard cloth seats are still fine.
@@Clarky_AU that’s exactly what I thought while driving the car. Release the first one, then realise the full potential with the facelift. Great buy, hope you enjoy the car and let it loose on the occasional track day!
@@Clarky_AU "Big difference between the 2, i feel the preface-lift was the "beta" version of what Hyundai was visioning for the I30N." From what I gathered this is pretty spot on, the FL i30N fixed pretty much all of the "flaws" of the pre FL.
Both are excellent hatches, Reubens, and you won’t be disappointed with the i30! And great choice with the Polar white. It contrasts nicely with the spoiler and alloys. Are you planning on any track days?
@@alexinwood2723 The white and black contrast is exactly why I've chosen this colour. I would absolutely love to take it to the track, after I hit the 1000km mark... 😉
@@JTisMickey excellent choice. You’ll really enjoy that car. And be sure to take it to a circuit at least once. They’re a ball when you let them move around a bit. And thanks for the kind words 👍🏼 More videos are coming so stay tuned!
After subscribing to Wheels for the last 20 or so years this is the first online Wheels review I’ve come across. Not that I’ve been specifically looking, mind you. Well done on the good review. Certainly a lot of thought and consideration has been put into this car by Hyundai. Thinking I’d go for the sedan N though, based on reviews and comments comparing the two.
Definitely. Biermann DNA is very apparent, which is excellent. And we actually tested i30 N with Megane RS last week for MOTOR so keep an eye out for that comparison. Good shout on including 128ti though!
Yep, you nailed it! Not a bad little spot but the dirt that’s dragged onto the road by tractors is definitely an issue. And not conducive to quick 0-100 times in a front-driver 🤣 It’s a seriously quick jigger on a clean surface though! Hope your low side wasn’t too serious?
@@alexinwood2723 it's a good surface for keeping you on your toes.. I limped away with cuts and bruises, full gear save my ass TBH the Duke didn't fair to well though. Keep up the honest reviews mate, your not trying to emulate anyone else in your delivery too which is so hard to find in Moto journalism these days 👍🏼👍🏼
@@akent46 cheers mate, have been shooting lots lately so expect plenty more reviews! And bugger about the Duke. Glad you were mostly okay though. Proper gear is so important
Me too. So many little touches throughout that remind me of BMW. The Biermann influence is strong. Optional seats are also better than regular ones IMO
From two months ago i´ve one. Blue performance, with dct and sunroof. Mr. Smile called me now. People look at the car all the time. It´s so beautiful and is so funny.
The manual is 33kg lighter than the DCT, and the base trim is 61kg lighter than premium trim with sun roof. So base manual model is near 100kg lighter than the sun roof DCT!
I'm sure others have mentioned this also but the premium versions also get a auto dimming rearview mirror where the base still has old school manual style!
Great family hot hatch in a shrinking market sector love that it exists but would I buy one - not sure as RS300 Megane would be my first choice followed by a GTI Clubsport Golf if it were available here - great launching and driving Alex 👍
Cheers Malcolm. It’s a shame the segment is shrinking in Oz because the metal is better than ever. The best bit is each contender has its own personality so there’s a flavour for most tastes
Here in the states they called it an elantra gt I believe... they need to bring this here and rock out a 350hp awd version it needs a little bit of refinement especially on some of the styling but it's a dope car
I had a mark 6 gti previously and currently in a 2018 swift sport, good fun, but more of a warm hatch then hot hatch. Just ordered the i30n DCT, can't wait, unfortunately 6-12 months waiting time for delivery at the moment in brissy :(
I would never buy a GTi MK8 over this car. Not because its rubbish but because it is no where near as much fun and doesn't have anywhere near the character of this car. Personally in the N I find the suspension setting in Normal is good enough on uneven roads to be comfortable. It is softer than my old 2019 WRX and I would say the Sport setting is on par with it. There is way too much gloss piano black around the dash in the GTi and looks tacky to me. I also don't like the look of the MK8 Gti , the 7.5 was way better looking. Gti wheels- YUK. Buggy infotainment system - no thanks. Over 60K drive away -no thanks. I30N DCT is way better and cheaper if you like to drive an exciting car that makes you feel good and puts a smile on your face while driving and long afterwards too. Thumbs up from me. That's why I bought one. Got mine in white.
@@WheelsAustralia Mine was a Premium pack with sunroof :-) No plans to track this car. I had a 2005 WRX from new that was heavily modified that I did a lot of tarmac rally stuff with up until a couple of years ago. Sort of lost a bit of interest in it so this is going to be a daily with just cosmetic mods. Its cheaper that way too ;-)
Just wanted to thank Hyundai for not putting in the stupid auto start stop function that you need to turn off every time you drive most other performance hatches
About to upgrade from our 2016 GTi Perfomance. Which I love... sounds silly, but I hate manual handbrake ;) Love the auto handbrake on GTI... Also would have like to have digital dials. Test driving one this week.
Ohhhh mannnn how I wish they would make these in the US they are so dope and practical ! I’m going to have to see if I can import one from Germany or Australia cuz I can’t deal with not having it
Looks sexy AF!....I'll be buying one next year when I upgrade my car. The red looks great but im keen on a white one!. Imo a way better buy than the GTI
I am going to order the Facelift in November. Not sure about the transmission. I love manuals, but the dct is really good too. What would you consider, I can't decide 😊🙌
Great decision. Transmission is really tricky. Manual is more fun but DCT is substantially quicker and includes NGS etc. I'm actually 50:50 on it and change my mind every day!
@@alexinwood2723 yep it is literally a carbon copy of the sport response system even the way that DCT works is like they chopped open a PDK and took a look inside
A car you can only drive in Australia and other countrys where the fuel is cheap. In Germany you pay 2,70-2,75$ per litre at the moment and in a few months/years it will be 3,20$.
I get mine next week. Same colour. No one else see the stupidity in having that bloody 'N' blue highlights/stitching on the inside of a RED car? And it's not just an 'N' thing. The Fastback N gets those same accents in red.
I actually didn’t have NGS activated on that run Glenn. I used it on others but the 5.0sec time was a perfect storm of ideal wheel slip, grip and launch revs
We have the i30N and even without rear vents, it’s not been an issue for us. We live in a hot area in Oz and often drive around on a hot day with both kids in the back and they are plenty cool. The front vents work well and cool the entire car.
@@joshlambert9100 I’ve got a 2017 i30 and my siblings always complain about the lack of air con in the back so it’s a big deal for me. We are a family of sweaty gremlins apparently.
I'm glad it's still has the manual option, and a proper handbrake lever- unlike VW. It ain't a hot hatch without a manual;) DCT = boredom- I may as well use flappy paddles on my X Box controller whilst playing Forza🤣
