I actually think Hyundai should have worked on improving the "classic" Ioniq and increase it's battery size. There is a real need for efficient and affordable EVs like this.

I completely agree. It was quite disappointing that the 2nd gen did not get the same 64kWh battery as a long-range Kona EV, only that measley 38kWh one :/ and I am pretty sure Hyundai could have jammed that battery in there - think about all empty spaces in the trunk! My only hope is now that Hyundai brings back the classic Ioniq as the IONIQ 4 on its E-GMP platform, which would be AMAAAAAZING!

@@Antiorganizer I know very well what you mean: I also own a 2018 Ioniq since for 2 years now. It was the perfect choice for me as my apartment is equipped with both a chargeport and solar panels, plus I rarely use a car for commuting to work (bike infrastructure is amazing here!) and we usually make 2-3 500+ km/300+ mi per year. Also nothing too fancy as this is the first car I own and I haven't been driving consistenly for years now (rented a Model 3 Performance in 2020, it was an amazing experience, but too much for me!) I absolutely love our Ioniq and it has never let me down so far. My biggest problem: it is very hard to find an EV similar to this caliber nowadays. I had been giving some thoughts of "to which other EV I would switch my Ioniq in the future" and it is a very difficult choice. Mostly because - as you said - every new EV is either a bloody SUV or a crossover... and the sedans? If they don't come with a hatchback, instant no-go. Stellantis is coming out with some station wagon EVs for Peugeot and Opel (which I might be interested in), but despite the 50kWh battery packs, since those powertrains are not Ioniq level efficient, I might as well just stick to my Ioniq until it disintegrates completely. The other thing I am hopeful for (COME ON, HYUNDAI, YOU CAN DO IT!!!): IONIQ 6 station wagon

@@Antiorganizer Naaaaaaaah... despite the Model 3 being a peppy sedan and the EV with the best powertrain out there, the liftback was and will be a huge deal-breaker for me :/ I will defo check out the used EV market in 2025 (after 3 years of ownership of my Ioniq) just out of curiousty but I am already prepared for the scenario you mentioned: just keep driving my lovely little Ioniq as long as possible. Time will tell which other EVs will become bargain on the market later and what new models will get revealed in the future. I am in no rush to switch from this efficient gem any time soon

I have to thank you for convincing me to get the Ioniq. Last year I was looking to replace my ICE for an EV and it was because of your videos that I found out about this one and how good it was. It has been over a year now and I couldn't be happier with it.

So, after 3 years and 76k km with my 2019 Ioniq 28kWh, here's what I have for efficiency. My daily commute to work is about 70km on flat terrain. About half of it is on the highway where I enable adaptive cruise control and stay in the right lane mostly, tucked in behind trucks often. In the summer months, this places my average consumption below 90Wh/km. The lowest I have seen this summer was 79 and last year it was even 76. When I charge the car to 100% I see 300km as estimated range. This appears to be a hard limit. Last week, I came home in the evening and when I added the distance driven to the distance remaining, I ended up with 320km of potential range. And when I left the next morning with 300km on the GOM again, it took about 10km before the GOM displayed 299. I usually don't recharge every day and in the summer I can go 3 days without recharging, that's about 220km and I think I could add another day, but I don't want to risk it. My biggest complaint about the car? The damn armrests. On long drives, they are just too hard. And my elbows always rest on them. The one in the door already has a dent from my elbow. And yes, I've done my own 1000km days with my car ;) It is just a great road tripping car. If only it had a bigger battery, but then it wouldn't be as efficient.

yes 300km seems hard coded limit on GOM. I also have a dent on the door armrest.

I bought our classic Ioniq 2018 last February from Austria for 19 800 Eur (only 19750 km on odo). Today we have there 54 000km and it is awesome car! Chosen just by Bjorn old videos as the efficiency king and fast charging. This sumer I did my record speed charging 71kW at 73% SOC. Charged from 11 to 74% in 16 minutes! Winter at -5°C with roof box filled by skis, avg consumption 15.6 kWh/100km only. My very first drive was from Slovakia to Finland ~2000km in winter (-5°C) with strong headwind. My very first charging was with turtle mode on already :D After that I know how and when to charge safely...every 110-130km on highway speed. Nowadays, I am driving Ioniq every day 50-60km to/from work + grocery and weekend trips 200-400km far away, mostly below 240km (my full range). The only cons of this car are: small battery, not possible to set charging limit to e.g. 80-85% (I am using smart plug that activates at certain hour before I go to work). This is the BEST cheap EV out there. Howk.

Do you charge by your home 220v charger? (the displayed one) and do you charge to full? I drive daily more than 120-200 km's, would you advise to get 100% each day, since you do not have stop at 95% charge?

@@Owsryudie Ideally you time your charging so that it gets to 100% just shortly before you will leave. That way the battery never sits at 100% for long. If you are charging on your home A/C charger, you can set the charge timer in the Ioniq classic to your departure time. It will then manage the charging to get to 100% shortly before the departure time, and you can also pre-heat / pre-cool the car for that time.

@@Owsryudie Yes, I have an Ioniq Classic with 28kWh battery. In summer, I get a bit more than 200km range, maybe 220 or even 230 on a good day when driving mostly rural country roads around 80-100km/h. In winter, slightly less than 200km. On motorways, I plan a charging stop roughly every 130km (charging ~10%-80% battery).

I still have the original Ioniq (2018) and I'm very happy with it. I don't even try to maximize the range but I'd say I still get about 200 km during the warmer days and 160 km during the winter (-20 C). Great car for the price!

Great car! I'm an Ioniq classic owner since 1 year now. This summer I drove a trip from Bavaria to the Netherlands (about 750 km) with only 4 charging stops. Average consumption was 126 Wh/km with maximum Autobahn speed set to 130 km/h. But due to a lot of Stau and road construction the average speed was about 95 km/h. And charging this car is realy fast. 20 minutes at an HPC charger and you are good to go another 200 km. I love my Ioniq even though it has allready driven 75000 km.

Last weekend with my 2019 ioniq electric, I logged 7.8 Miles per Kilowatt Hour on a 22-mile drive. My absolute best ever! Normally, 4.5 to 5.5 without paying attention is easy. My 2020 ioniq electric with the 38KW battery is averaging 203-224 miles range with mixed around town driving, My 2019 with the 28 kWh battery is getting 135-158 miles! I love the 2017-2021 ioniq electrics they are so underappreciated. In fact the value on both cars has gone up between 4 and 9 thousand dollars since I purchased them just 2 months ago!

I have the same experience in terms of efficiency björn. If you let the hyundai charge over 100% for maybe 1 to two hours, then the cells synchronize with the internal resistance and you can then drive over 250km with the 99Wh/km my record was 264km. So the degradation is a little deeper. But then it is important to empty the battery again in between. In the summer of course. Thank you for your videos they give you so many positive thoughts. I appreciate that very much.

I got the 38kWh version. The infotainment system is identical to IONIQ 5, and with a small adapter I have wireless CarPlay as well. The thing is loaded with equipment, but unfortunately somewhat noisy. But all in all it’s an absolutely fantastic car, very versatile. I think it’s the only EV where you easily get 15%+ range without even trying.

100% underrated car, regularly getting 5.3 to 6 miles per kWh in the 38kwh version. What other car gets vented leather at its price? NOTHING! + all the safety features + radar cruise and Lane keep assist, really cant think of an upgrade except maybe an EQE or the new Model S.

My first electric car was a Hyundai Ioniq 28, which I drove 60,000 km in. My current one is a Tesla M3 SR+ MIC with now 30,000 km on the counter. I have carried out a Teslabjørn type 90 km/h and 120 km/h test in the Ioniq and a corresponding 90 km/h test in the Tesla. The Ioniq drove at 90 km/h with a consumption of 112.5 Wh/km 👍 and 150.5 Wh/km at 120 km/h. The Tesla used 123 Wh/km at 90 km/h. I have not tested the Tesla at 120 km/h. The conditions were quite similar: the speeds were real and constant - not speedometer value - no A/C nor heat and fan on low, ambient temperature around 20°C. Wind about 4 m/sec in the direction of travel (head and tail). The distance - forward and back - was around 50 km. You will hardly find a family type car with a lower consumption than the Ioniq 28 😎

Thanks for recommending this car Björn! I have now owned mine, from 2019 as well, for 6 months, and even though it doesn't have the biggest single charge capacity, it makes up for it with the faster charging, just as you taught me in your old videos (and new ones). I felt a bit bad fast charging the Ioniq so many times in a row on a round trip Oslo-Bergen-Oslo, but it never cold gated (avg temps -5, got down to -10 and less with the wind when over highlands around Fagerheim), and uphills from Eidfjord to Vöringsfossen were perfectly balanced out with the downhills to Geilo, and I even ended up with close to 13kWh/100km for that crazy up/downhill leg. A bit worried about degradation from the charging, but I have tried my best to stay under 80% during those sessions. I can't wait for the summer when I can relax a bit more with the range. Thank you for the test! We are so happy that we bought one two years ago. Your test also indicate how much we save on our power bill! During summer our Ioniq 28kwh usually has about 265 km on GOM (145,000 km total). I will drive 220 km without range anxiety. On one of the coldest winter days in Denmark I used about 70% when I drove 130 km to/from work on snowy roads.

Its not only the efficiency, its is also the charging speed (up to 600km/h). C Rate of 2,5 at 75% SOC. No current car can beat that. Hail to NMC111!

I've noticed that when you reach 13% then it's goes almost immediately to 7% and quickly to 0% so I always planing the trip the way to charge when is about 15% and it gets nice charging speed (68-66kW)

Skoda citigo iV (vw e-up) is also very efficient. Driving like this I probably get less than 8-9 kWh/100 km. Efficient EVs for the win!

Was about to write the same. The facelift e-up triplet seems very efficient, i've heard reports about 8ish summer highway consumption (80km/h without AC), that's really great in my book.

amazing old ioniq, some guys in France use it as a reference for tests certainly inspired by you bjorn. their youtube channel is lachaineev, and there website is great (not as good as your results but good anyway). I love their adas test protocole. it s my favourite feature on my tesla, I wish you do some adas tests bjorn style one day

I have 2018 ioniq it made 70k km I did about 40k on it in 2 years I'm getting from 180 to 260 range on it. Would love if it would have 11 or 22kw ac charging. This would make this car invincible :D I did a few trips from 700 to 1500 km in one go with a few naps in between. Would consider ioniq 6 if the trunk would open with the glass... Now only car I would upgrade is Zeekr 001 for me it is most similar upgrade to ioniq. Long live ioniq :D

I drive the PHEV (yes, I was uncertain about the charging situation 4 years ago). It is a miracle in terms of consumption as well. On longer trips it consumes around 3L or fuel per 100km which is absolutely phantasmic for a car weighing almost 2 tons.

I'm considering to buy ioniq hybrid for Autobahn, daily I drove around 90 km. On weekends about 260 km regularly on Autobahn. I would ask you what would be my consumption on Autobahn 110-130km/h ?

@@emilch8341 Well, I have the PHEV, but once it is in Hybrid mode and I drive on the Autobahn with tempomat then it consumes below 3 liters at 110, but do not go above that will raise the consumption, there seems to be a threshold at 110.

Why don't TeslaY, like Ioniq28, have ventilated seats, paddle shifters for regen and the option to remove all the silly sounds? I would really wish I could merge my Ioniq and TMY to have best of the two. Too bad Tesla think it's more important with farting sounds, reindeer sled animation and a sweaty seat 😒

If you do the math all is logic. Lighter cars with small internal consumption have a deeper power curve with a optimum at lower speed. All cars can fit into one eqlition Power = konstant + Rr*V + RVind*V3. If you know weight front area and CW you can calculate any car. If you know the internal consumption the formula is spot on. Its easy to kalibrate in TB excel sheet

While I always carry a 12v booster our car is 4 years old and still on the original 12v battery with NO issues. The only battery problems so far is the sudden failure of the both key batteries withina few weeks of each other. No warning!

A year ago I had to decide between a 2019 Model 3 and an Ioniq. Previously I owned the 28kWh-model but now have the Model 3. The main reasons are: * Residual Range is *not* given by actual use but by a strange average - totally useless for highway-rides. * The adaptive cruise control always turns off after 4 seconds in the case of Stop & Go - not totally wrong, but 4 seconds are not enough. * In the last year the prices rose to insane levels up to 60 or 70ct/kWh in Austria while the Superchargers are in a range of 36 to max. 50ct/kWh. * The charging speed (the biggest issue) is not sufficient for long ranges when I go to e.g. my parent's place or visit my siblings which are unfortunately more than 450km away. To be honest, I miss the large hatch of the trunk compared to the M3.

It’s not possible to have a bigger batt in the Ioniq. They upgraded it with a 38kWh in the facelift but that one sucks at fast charging simple because it’s so densily packed. The Ioniq wasn’t built exclusively as an EV so the only room for the battery is under the rear seats and the trunk.

Degradation of 6% vs 18% on my 2014 leaf with 60k on clock. Shows u what active cooling does for the battery. However i recently managed 130km on 15kwh so not too much difference , but mine test was a mostly 60kmh and some 80 kmh of 20% , so not as good, but not bad. Also my test wasnt as controlled as yours.

the cöassic Ioniq is amazing. I wished they had kept the good chaeging speed in the facelift - no idea which idiot decided to drop that. give that car a 50kWh battery and it can hit 500km range. amazing car!

It's the result of a different battery chemistry and design. Not that much they could have done unless they increased the size even more, but that wouldn't have fit in the same space, requiring a bigger redesign that wasn't worth it. And despite the slower charge speed, it wasn't until you hit your second charge with the bigger battery that you would start falling behind the smaller battery sized car on a long distance road trip, and most people rarely drive that far which made it an acceptable loss.

@@Hans-gb4mv Precisely! I have had the 38.3 kWh version since late Nov. 2019 and am super pleased with the car. If you draft behind trucks or use the "freewheel" you can reach insanely low consumption. I seldom drive longer than 500 km and charge while having lunch so all perfect. And with rising electric costs low consumption becomes even more important.

Which speed? And what height (comparison to sea level) I do with my ioniq 2017 ca 200 km with 100 km/h (GPS checked) in summer at sea level. Km total 104000 until now. At sunday driving my record is 95 wh/km as lowest ever. The dealer told me that 250 km with this car is done before on a single charge. (Not highway)

Age is almost irrelevant. What matters is number of cycles (which means total km driven). And the car is not 6 years old. This is from 2019. But the first Ioniqs came out in 2016. You probably mixed up up a bit.

@@bjornnyland What also matters (maybe even more than milage and cycles) is: 1. High SOC for a long time, letting the EV sit with 100% SOC in the garage 2. High Power Charging all the time 3. Pedal to the Metal Speed all the time (applies to Autobahn) 4. Draining the Battery to extreme low very often 5. Hot climate conditions So in general, avoid the extremes and you should be fine.

Battery degradationtest at winter not reliable? If we think of this video as an degradation test, I find following results: Battery capacity : (12,1 x 2,01)/0,96=25,3 kWh. On this barely used car you would expect around 28 kWh. It is unlikely that it's caused by degradation. More likely the lowered capacity is caused by the low temperature (-4°). That would suggest that degradationtest with this method (yours) should only be done at warm temperatures.

Wish more manufacturers made their EV's more efficient. In the end, you can do with a smaller battery and spend less time charging. Imagine an efficient car like this with a 30Kwh battery which can charge with 250KW. You be fully charged an ready to drive another 300 km within 10 minutes.

I have an Ioniq 28 KWH Electric vehicle. While attempting to charge my car through AC, the connection failed, and the car did not receive a charge. I encountered the same issue with CCS, despite the cable appearing to be in good condition. It was successfully charging just two days ago. What could be the issue?

The common issue is the charger lock. it will not allow a DC(CCS) charge if it wont lock. i had it replaced once under warranty and the dealer said it was common. Fixed and has worked flawless ever since

Great video, sorry i missed it last year. I am interested in getting such a car and to ditch my inefficient Zoe 22kWh from 2013. How fast does it charge from 10...80 % in winter / summer typically? I have seen in a comment someone suggesting recharging every 130km on motorway but i am wondering for how long then? Unfortunately i have a few long trip a year (650...700km one way), typically at Christmas time and possibly on one or two other WE so I am thinking i need sthg quite fast charging to make it worth it. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you
