Our proper road review of the latest Hyundai IONIQ6 with the high performance AWD dual motor drivetrain. We knew it would be brisk but we didn't expect chassis and suspension to be this good. Come for a proper blast in this odd-looking performance sedan.

It’s great to have Australian drivers do tests like this, well done. My Epic is better than I thought. I completely agree about the car’s dynamics, it’s great. Car styling has been a lifetime passion for me and I like it, but I never expect others to agree. People who see it, without any prompting from me, say the like the look. Like my E-Type it’s styling is dictated by the wind, not fashion. I got used to the cameras fairly quickly, although I would not have specified them given the choice. They are better at night and in the rain. I have to say “ I love this car”

I don't think that it "looks wacky" at ALL. I was first attracted to it BECAUSE of its striking aero, non-SUV, great looks.

Another car I’d buy in-spite of its looks rather than because I liked its look. Another great review guys

I love the design, the interior roominess, and the included tech. I think design is very close to the Prophecy concept. I own a First Edition model (AWD) since March, and I really enjoy it. The spoilers make more sense here in Germany, where highway speed is higher than in AUS.

Hi lads. I’ve had my Genesis GV60 for almost 12 months and 22000 km. I know it is not quite the same car as the Ionic6 you are driving but pretty close. My verdict after 12 months. Best car I’ve ever had and nothing has gone wrong - as Stu said - getting into the car at anytime one cannot fail to be impressed with the effortlessness, quietness, tech features and quality. Great to have a fang or cruise. Whilst no sports car it does drive really well. I’d love to try an Ionic 6 sometime to see how it compares to my GV60. Anyway great review and comments. Keep up the good work. Cheers Steve

The IONIQ 6 has the edge on the GV60 in dynamics but they are both very good. If I had to choose for myself I'd definitely choose the GV60. And I'm not an SUV kind of guy normally.

I just took delivery of the AWD Techniq 2 months back. The design is rather controversial more or less like when they released the BMW 5 series E60. The odd looking back does grows on you after a while. Going past 2-3 iterations of 3 series/5 series M-Sports car (non M cars) over my car ownership experiences, I think the ride and handling of this EV surprises me. It quite balanced and it is not as harsh as the Tesla. On top of that, I don't really feel the 2 tonnes when I'm going in and out of corners. Power wise, it is more than adequate but not like the push of a Tesla Model Y Performance model (it was my alternative choice). At last, I felt the perception of quality when it comes to the interiors of the car, the availability of dashboard and indicators stalk on the steering wheel are crucial for me. Call me old school but personal preference. And also.. my daughter loves the RGB lighting that set the mood for the car, and they are pretty similar to BMW implementation. Overall, the power, the handling, the charging speed, design! and overall quality, it is a go for me and I'm still loving it.

Gratifying to read stories like that. Yes all good points and we agree it is a quality piece of kit that's very well balanced and hides its weight very well.

New subscriber. Have owned this car (well the Techniq with proper mirrors hehe) since Q1 23. Loving it. Thanks for the review.

Was so impressed with the dynamics of our Hyundai i20N, thinking about one of these, tax free, through a company car scheme. Hopefully they’ll do a N version of this having done the 5N. Met Albert Beerman at goodwood! Nice guy.

didn't like the looks on screen, but strangely it grew in a matter of minutes while seeing it "in person". The test drive did the rest...

Great review as usual gents. I’m 100% with you on what I see. I’ve commented before on the “mirror” thing as I mostly love them on my GV60 (with the screens in a better location) but you are so right about their terrible adjustability outwards, yet I can see so much of the side of the car if I wanted to. The Ioniq 6 would be buyable if they just lost the top rear spoiler.

Definitely on the list for my next EV seeing as the Kona is over 4.5 years old and there's been lots of tech improvements over those few years. Even on the lower spec Ionic 6 which is more in my price bracket. I'm just waiting to see what the next version Kona looks like and hopefully it will be even closer to my wallet capacity. Thanks for that review. Good to see one more than "review by spec sheet". 😉

I have the base model Ioniq 6, called Dynamiq here in Australia. It has much better range than the Kona, looks much better, and I am REALLY happy with how it drives.

100% agree with you about the screens for mirrors. When we drove the Genesis I found them to be horrible because of the different focus points, and as you mention with mirrors you move your head slightly to increase the field of vision. Also agree 100% with the stupidity of removing the indicator stalks on new Teslas. Maybe that can work if they also put in a full steer by wire and so under 240° lock to lock steering but in a normal car where the wheel can be upside down in a roundabout then just no.

Fabulous review - thanks guys. I don't like the way cameras and screens are taking over. If you're a passenger prone to motion sickness both the rearview screen and any writing on the central screen will make you feel queasy. Seems manufacturers haven't considered or indeed realised this.

Another excellent review. Can you do a video about the differences of insuring a petrol vs EV please, if you think it is suitable for this channel.

Thanks for the review it will be very interesting to see how the highland model 3 and this car go in Australia. I got to admit the indicator buttons on the 2024 model 3 are so incredibly stupid. Was considering the ioniq 6 but just can’t justify the price. Ended up ordering a model 3 lr 2024. If the indicators become a big issue I’m sure a retrofit for an indicator stalk will become available. Great to see Hyundai really making great cars though.

Hey Stu, great review. Was wondering what road did you guys test drive the Ioniq on? Seems like you headed up North on the m1 but turned off into some mountain road somewhere? Thanks!

We often turn off the M1 at Calga and go to Gosford or out the other way to the Yarramalong valley, or further out to Wollombi. If in the blue mountains, Megalong valley or more often Kanimbla Valley, although the roads are pretty potholed there are the moment. Further afield remote roads around Lithgow.
