I demonstrate how the Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) on Hyundai Ioniq works. This is not the same as Tesla autopilot. It's a support system for helping you steer. In a way you can consider it "autopilot light". I will in a few days test the new Nissan Leaf's ProPilot feature.

I drove mine for 400 miles on UK motorways this week and within its own limits it works really well. Rest your hands on the bottom of the wheel, or your elbow on the edge of the windowsill and your hand on the horizontal arm of the wheel and you won't be bugged at all (unless LKAS loses the lane markers) but will be able to take over anytime you need to. Used that way, with adaptive cruise, and you get a relaxing drive for mile (or kilometer) after mile. No, it's not autonomous driving but, it makes long highway driving much safer if used as designed.

And long journeys very relaxing. It's a pleasure. The smart cruise control is smooth too. The other day I noticed that if a car enters your lane in front of you and accelerates, the cruise control doesn't brake to remain at the safety distance but waits untile that car gain safety distance. It's a litte pleasent detail. :)

Hi guys, have you tested this feature in city traffic? Is it any good? Thanks

Gabriel Moise Why would you even bother in the city? It’s too dangerous. There are stop signs, lights, pedestrians, etc.

Thx for the nice video. Actually I´m driving an Ioniq Hybrid with the same LKA System. And Yes, it does help you, at least it supports you while driving a long time on a motor way. Having the freedom to keep the feet off the throttle and grabbing the steering wheele just slightly makes the ride way more comfortable as without the system. :) BTW: The Time you can keep your hands off the steering wheel is always the same: 13 seconds (afaik).

Right!!! I was like "is he gonna start driving soon?" Then I was like "is he fake driving on a green screen?" Then i was like ahh hes driving, I just cant see partially because of over exposure and the camera angle.

You should do a side by side video with that cars lane assist and autopilot comparison on the same road.

Bjørn, I would like you to tell us more about how well the cars handle: around corners, how good the suspension is, brakes. Especially that LRR tires sometimes are not the best choice for colder climate (snow/water), so it would be really interesting if you could tell us how EVs handle compared to some classic cars (golf, 3 series, opel astra) I red that for example Ioniq isn't very good to handle, so I wonder what you have to say about this As EVs start to gain more and more ground, they also need to improve on other aspects except range. keep up the good work!

The key word here is "Assist"...hence the need of keeping your hands on the steering wheel. Besides, "i think it works best if you go in a straight line" :D that was golden! It should definately slow down once it disengages LKA in the way you were showing, tho. I can tell the way LKA works in sub-optimal conditions (or even in ideal ones) isn't good enough for Hyundai to trust it at all. The Ioniq is still an interesting car, nonetheless.
@oceancaster
@oceancaster 6 лет назад
It's a design choice to make. Is it better to slow down the car in case of the wheel fails to recognize the hands (on mine happened twice in 3k km the road was so straight my hands where perfectly still... it beeped thinking i removed them :D ) or in case of system failure you, since you're supposed to be in control as ths is only ad assistive technology, simply continue driving and eventually stop at gas station to check the system? There isn't a perfect solution to this and they simply choose one of the two. :)
@DeerKoden
@DeerKoden 6 лет назад
The sensor shouldn't have issues if someone is actually holding the steering wheel. I agree tho, there isn't a perfect solution.

I also found the feeling of the steering wheel a bit weird when LKAS is enabled.
@MarkGovier
@MarkGovier 6 лет назад
It is LKA not auto-pilot. "Assist" means you are still meant to steer. The idea is to provide tactile feedback before you leave a lane not to steer for you.
@TwistedMexi
@TwistedMexi 4 года назад
It still does though, Hyundai has a commercial where they had 6 cars and the drivers jumped out to a truck. All the cars were empty, driving themselves following the car in front. It works, but you should remain alert.
@bijdikh8516
@bijdikh8516 4 года назад
@@TwistedMexi Bruh that's a car commercial, 90% of the shit you see in those you should never do or never can do. Remember the Lexus hover board ad, where they said it was all real with no wires? All of that was done on a tiny metal track hidden under the concrete, and that gave a very small margin for error. The people who did the ad said it was harder than trying to ride on a tight rope, and since the thing needed liquid nitrogen to keep the magnets cold enough, they only had about a minute or so per session. Car ads are always full of shit.

I like this assisted lane keeping more than the AP on Tesla since you can still drive normally and get immediately assisted when needed. Tesla takes the total control and then you’d still have to be alert which is more annoying than driving yourself actually. If you wanted to steer just for a moment, you can’t, since the Tesla AP switches off if you do. Changing lanes and taking over the control every once in a while becomes an annoyance with Tesla, and my God the beeps etc. all the time.. I wish Tesla had this type of version on the AP as well. Ioniq was a very nice surprise in this regard and the overall quality feel was good.
@MrKaypeder
@MrKaypeder 6 лет назад
This is lane keep assist and that it does not bug you for a long time was because it turns off and on again several times. You see the green steering wheel that disappears and returns again several times when you release the steering wheel and every time you have to take over it is deactivated

Bjorn, does the car also beep if you change lanes by using a short burst of turn signal? You know, when you don't push the turn signal stick all the way - just for the three, 5 or 7 indicators.

Test a Volvo with a plug in. xc90-has a little ev range.. . it has this sort of lane assist and adaptive cruise control.. I drove one and it really did a good job staying in the lane- however, I found the lane assist to be annoying.. if it won't fully stay in the lane, it kind of makes me more anxious.

I was one of those who forget turnlights when changing lanes (i had a sport car so when changing lane i was simply too fast to be a danger for cars coming). Now with Ioniq i always use turnlights. It's not only for LKAS warnings but also to enable Blind Spot Detection warnings. You can also use them in "pulse". Just a pression on the shafts and they blink 3, 5, 9 times (configurable). A side note, comparing with a model3 autopilot is unfair not only for the missing hardware and the different scope of Auopilot vs Assistive systems bu the price of Model3 is not only higher. It's more than 50% higher! At that price the Ioniq is amazing in what it offers. i'm looking for your test of i3 as i read bad reviews of adaptive cruise control and lkas on that car.

Got the Hyundai hybrid Premium SE model recently. (2018 -UK) Loving it. Easily the best car I have ever had. Early days but averaging 62 mpg although I did have it in the sport mode a few times which makes it feel a different car again. Have to get used to a silent car on start up. Looks stunning in the platinum silver finish and much better looking than the Prius. Dual clutch automatic super smooth.

Maybe the ping-pong Control is by design so that it’s uncomfortable to let it drive. It’s supposed to just nudge you back into your lane, not drive. This is Tesla’s mistake because people will bypass the safety shutoff and take a nap. Im pretty sure Hyundai can use PID control if they want it to be deceptively smooth, but you can’t defeat ping-pong control mode with an Orange. Haha
@dunhillsupramk3
@dunhillsupramk3 6 лет назад
for the price the Ioniq is better and worth the money... currently a Model3 with Autopilot is about $57k and this is about $35k-$38k?? plus i think Hyundai has shown a full lvl4/5 version of this system that'll be available in the future...
@scifarer
@scifarer 6 лет назад
Those systems aren't supposed to be used like Teslas autopilot. They're supposed to keep you from drifting out of your lane, not drive the car. That's why it ping pongs. It's not safe, and should not be used in this way.

@Trades46

Tesla's autopilot WILL eventually kill someone by the way the company keeps advertising this thing. These are nothing more than assist systems meant to make minor adjustments to a driver who is tired or not paying attention for a split second to say "hey man wake up & drive!", NOT autonomous drive. The closest we have to full autonomous drive is Audi's traffic jam assist in the A8, but even that is not exactly hands-off/attention-away program either.
@dunhillsupramk3
@dunhillsupramk3 6 лет назад
eventually??? it already has... i know of 2cases where it has resulted in death, 1 where it plow itself into a semi truck killing the driver and 2 where it moe down a cyclist... Tesla "Autopilot" is at lvl2 and isn't a true autopilot, even Audi and Lexus (the only production lvl3 cars currently available) isn't ready for full self driving Audi and Lexus said so themselves...

"It disables the L KEY a, and then you die!!!" Had me LMAO 😂😂😂 That was funny!!! But I guess LKA is redundant. And I would have a hard time trusting this system. I guess you just have to find that sweet spot where You the driver and LKA work together. Otherwise it seems redundant and pointless.

Tesla’s standard auto pilot option costs nearly 1/3 the cost of a used Ioniq Hybrid model here in the UK. I think the Ionic and the Model 3 are very similar in the way these cars have been designed. Just price wise they are very different.
