Maybe you should have informed Rory about the charging architecture in ev´s prior to the review? Seems he is stuck in the classic exv´s mentality when confusing AC and DC. When you are at it, also tell him the difference between a charging cable and a charger.

@@MrAdopado indeed I got my last one in and out over the lip of our boot very easily. I had it on a 2-wheeled handcart, leaned the back of that against the car and slid the washing machine up it and in without any help - same at the other end.

Good review of the car, but poor review of "Ioniq: what's new in 2020". I can think of the following important differences that were not mentioned: - much slower DC charging speed - liquid cooled battery (good but requires very expensive cooling liquid change every three years) - due to new chemistry, battery needs to be heated for charging (already at 16 A), which requires energy (-> less efficient and slower charging) - more space in the boot as the air cooling fan on the right is no longer required -> additional compartment - tyres now have an aspect ratio of 60 instead of 55 -> 1 inch higher ride height (required to keep ground clearance the same as new battery is slightly taller) - European version now finally has an app for remote heating/cooling, status and various settings - possibility to pre-heat/cool the car without being on the charger - possibility to set a charging limit for daily driving (highly recommended to set this as low as possible with daily driving needs in order to reduce calendar ageing of the battery) There is probably more.

@davisadamOn the motorway (when DC charging matters most), you have mostly 175 to 350 kW chargers (already now, and even more so in the future). On those, the old Ioniq charges 21 kWh in 19.6 minutes, the new Ioniq needs 34.3 minutes.

@@Moody_Blues_ I have the old Ioniq with ventilated seats - I don't think anything has changed with those. They are great in summer. The slower charging matters only on trips of more than ~400 km as the new Ioniq has a head start of 10 kWh additional capacity so the first stop can be later. Regarding the battery, I think the old chemistry might be more durable and able to cope with higher and lower temperatures as it has significantly more cobalt than the new chemistry. Most important is to not keep the battery at high states of charge. If it is at 50% or less most of the time, and only charged to more directly before departing, calendar ageing should be minimal.

Thought it was because he wanted to everything else including electric cars which is why set up the carpervert channel? And this is what Rob didn't agree with I association with the fully charged?... I'm sure I'm just muddled up there lol if they got Rory in plugging auto trader, then... Why didn't they just keep JS?... Unless there was something... Else?

It's got four driving modes (eco+/eco/normal/sport). The Kona is not the same price it's about £6,000 more.

but kona have 65kw battery with 120km more distance available , with occasional longer trips that battery for city driving will degrade much less because you can keep it 80% charged or even less to preserve health. So you'll save some money on battery replacement.

@@terrabiker The 64kWh Kona actually has a 71kWh battery, it only uses 64kWh to give that 80% figure. Either way the 64kWh Kona does 300 miles in summer.

@@terrabiker You may loose 10-20% of battery capacity during the life of the car, but you dont replace the battery. It is not worth it on a 12-15 year old car.

A good review of a good car. BUT why do I always get the impression the reviewer is seeing this through the eyes of someone used to the best and most expensive out there. The car is what it is, a practical, very usable family car that happens to be electric. So it doesn't have an electric closing boot...you wouldn't expect that and the acceleration is far from slow. In the real world this hits the mark and is well built too...

I also think that the reviewer is seeing this through the eyes of someone used to the best and most expensive out there. I went from a 2017 prius to this car and it way exceeded my expectations, it's pretty quick in sport mode, and packed full of features not in other cars such as ventilated a/c seats, heated rear seats etc, and the cruise control with lane keep assist is pretty much auto pilot and works extremely well and he didn't mention these things.

I think Rory is just reviewing it as if it were any car. And that makes a nice change of pace in my opinion. When Robert reviews an electric car, he sees something that has the potential to reduce pressure on the environment, and his infectious enthusiasm about that comes through. Rory might see it the same way, who knows, but his delivery and review is unaffected and he is just comparing it to other cars (petrol/diesel/hydrogen/hybrid/electric/fluxcapacitor)... some of those will have an electric closing boot, some will not, for some people this will be an important differentiator (maybe pregnant women or people carrying infants or people with limited strength), and for some it will not.

Someone used to cars that are one step up from scrap would get very excited about this car. What's required is a test that's neutral, in context and full of detail

Why wasnt this Edited. The AC onboard AC 7kwh is not used on the Fast CCS charger and will not get you 0-80% in a short time. You must use the CCS Connector at a Fast Charger for this. Please correct this or at least admit it was a mistake otherwise reflects poorly on Quality up to now of Fully Charged reviews

Thanks Rory but you seemed to miss out the fact that this is the most efficient EV on the market - it literally sips electrons at a very low rate and therefore the 38.3KWh battery size is less of an issue than say a Nissan Leaf or Jaguar I pace especially on motorway trips. Also I it’s similarly priced to 39kwh Kona - not the 64kwh Kona, which is £4000 more. Just seen Mike Dee’s comments below - perhaps ask him for the most sailiant points next time👍

The Ioniq is going out of production soon so every car is now sold as Premium model (comes with everything except a sunroof). Costs about the same as the entry level Kona Trend with standard range (similar battery, range and performance). Kona can have load on the roof (has roofbars) but overall the Ioniq felt slightly more spacious. We recently ordered the Ioniq as I felt we got more for the money compared to the Kona.

Hyundai are doing good. I feel the reviews coverage of charging speeds needed a slightly more thoughtful approach .. build and refer to a FullyCharged database to compare models.

Agreed, but he was using the term "fall over" in the sense of "not working as well as you would want". It's pretty standard colloquial UK speech but not very helpful on a video piece that is going to be viewed internationally.

I don’t think Rory explains the charging very clearly. I think he was very confusing when talking about the AC charger when plugged into a DC rapid charger. No wonder so many new owners use the wrong plug at the services...

Could you elaborate? I don't own an electric car, so when he was explaining I just heard that the Ioniq is compatible with both fast, rapid, and "slow" chargers whether they're charging stations or home charging docks, which seemed like good news. Is there more to it that wasn't explained?

I'm amazed this hasn't been re-edited. Puts FullyCharged in a very poor light. The quoted speed of of the onboard charger is totally irrelevant to the speed the car may be able to Rapid Charge on a DC charger!

@@nc3826 Clearly the reviewer got himself in a petrolhead mistake conflating DC charging dependent on batery properties since the charger is inside DC public station, the speed and the curve of charging being decided by internal car computer, this information being transmitted to the public charger at the handshaking procedure; with AC charging mostly happening at home performed at the mercy of built inside the car charger thus the speed is capped by it. However there is a history of reviewer being a petrolhead with his longer than 10 years discussion with Robert about EVs which started with clear criticism and ended with him joining the Robert's channel. Thus this evolution should give the reviewer some slack and extra credit since he just started his relationship with EVs.

I loved my 28 kWh Ioniq, but only uppgrading to 39 kWh was not good value for money in my opinion. I now have the 64 kWh Kona and with over 300 miles of range it is insane. They should have put a 64 kWh battery in the Ioniq. That really would have been serious competition for the Model 3.

The problem with a bigger battery IONIQ is that it would be more expensive, both to build and for the costumer, and that it would be a bit of a waste considering that Hyundai have plans to launch their next generation EVs based on the fully electric E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) next year. The E-GMP cars will upgrade to a 800 volt system, that allows for significantly higher charging speeds and as a dedicated EV platform has room for larger battery packs. The charging speeds is rumoured to reach 200 kW, while the battery options should be 58 or 73 kWh. The cars will be branded as IONIQ, with the model names 5, 6 and 7. The IONIQ 5 will be the Kona of 2021, based on the Hyundai 45 concept electric car, while the IONIQ 6 will replace the Hyundai IONIQ EV in 2022, based on their Prophecy EV concept and finally the IONIQ 7 will be a larger SUV arriving in 2024.

At 11:20 you mention "it has a onboard 7.2kw charger, which means on a 50 or 100Kw charger you be at 80% in 54 mins" don't think that is right. But I would have liked to know what power it is possible to rapid charge at.

The 7.2kw capability refers to the max AC charging speed - typically when charging at home.

The 38,3 kWh maxes out at 140 Amps delivered from a 50+ kW charger. Still the low nominal battery voltage 320V will limit the charge power.

@@derekwhite5090 the absolute max is 50 kw. As mentioned elsewhere it runs low voltage compared to most EVs so it's likely to be lower than that.

Electric cars don't have cornering issues, their much lower centre-of-gravity helps this. Electric cars are not faster than "some" sports cars, the fastest sports cars are literally electric. This isn't Top-Gear, Rory, leave the anti-EV nonsense out.

The lower centre of gravity might help keep the suspension level during cornering but the higher overall mass of EVs in general will absolutely increase the chances of losing it on a bend if you enter too quickly. It's simple physics. Don't accuse someone of being anti-EV when they are clearly not, just because you won't recognise a hard truth.

Yes it is the model introduced last year as the 2020 model. with the larger ~40 kWh battery that charges a bit slower but has longer range on a charge.

It is an updated version of the Ioniq. We are working very hard to get the newer EVs, but for some strange reason the car companies are being very slow to respond.

@@philiphambley7787 Pribably, and then without the frunk, and without the lower compartment in the Model 3. I think Model 3 boot is still larger, but with the hatch, the Ioniq is much more practical.

Interesting review. Whoever does the music for your videos, well that person/organisation uses Artist !! By the way, the Ioniq moved from the 28Kw/H to the 39kw/h battery a couple of years ago. The Ioniq really needs the 64kw/h battery that the Kia E-Nero and Kia Soul have. This bigger battery would give this relatively small car close to 300 miles of range on a charge. Now that would be a good car !!! The other really big issue with this car is the price. Hyundai's equivalent sized petrol car (the i30) starts at £17400 in the UK. The Ioniq Electric starts at a whopping £30950. To really get electric car sales off the ground, the prices need to drop to the equivalent (or if possible lower) than the petrol cars and the longer range batteries are needed. Beyond this, for an electric car in 2020, the Ioniq has a lot going for it. Also this is a good review and Rory is a good reviewer.

I'm so glad Rory is back on RU-vid and with fully charged! He's a great presenter but his appearances on Top Gear were often awkward and unnatural. You can tell he enjoys this a lot more. No forced banter.

I said it before and many with me, but what a great addition you are to Fully Charged! For anyone less authoritative and with less command of his or her style of reviewing, and simply less well versed in the car industry, would have had a hard time filling Johnny’s shoes. And I know you aren’t filling his, but simply joined FC on your own merits but for us (or me at least) Johnny left, you came in, to me that’s a switch ;-) But man you are a joy to watch, to listen to, to follow you in your discovery of new cars and not one single moment I think “what’s he on about?!”. The opposite is true, I want to hear more, love your cheeky or honest yet kind jabs at the cars you review. So, even though the water is well under the bridge, the milk is not just spilled but even already turned into a dry sour patch, and the jury already went home on this one, I still felt the need to cover you in these guirlandes of thankfulness and sheer giddiness you actually joined FC. thought you should know, even though you already do of course and weren’t even contemplating it anymore until this git brought it up again... thanks mate!

Since this “new” Ioniq came out over a year ago, we do know that there have been quite a few charging issues. I’m a bit disappointed that you didn’t tell us whether these problems have actually been solved.

As a previous model Ioniq owner, I am happy. It is not a speed daemon or head turner, but it is a damn good car to use for just normal everyday driving. The Kona here in Australia was an extra $16,000. Not worth that for the 0.01% of driving we do that is longer than the range of the Ioniq battery. I travel on average 90km every day (to/from work), and the Ioniq works very well for that run. Cheap to run, reliable, easy to drive and comfortable. One complaint however - no spare wheel of any sort! I've been caught out twice now and that is a pain in the ____!

EDIT: disregard my comment. The two tons are with five passengers in, it actually weights 1,359-1,469 kg according to wikipedia. So it's not heavy at all, it's pretty decent. --"it's not a very heavy car"-- --It weighs literally two tons--

It's 90kg lighter GVM than Model 3 SR+ and that doesn't seem much. Most other more powerful EVs are AWD so more likely to be sure footed on a corner I'd have thought. It's a puzzling observation. Any car where you arrive at an unfamiliar corner wearing too much pace would be dicey, so not sure where he was going with that...

2 ton is GVW(Gross Vehicle Weight) which include 5 passenger and full of baggages. When Ioniq is in empty, then It weighs only 1,500kg

The boot is not larger than the boot of the Model S Most electric cars do not fall over in the corners - the handling comments apply to all cars with batteries low down - which is every electric car made the last 20 years. All electric cars in the last 20 years are easy to plug in at home. Not a word on the decreased charging speed compared to the older model. Inconsistent voice volume through the video This sounds like a sales pitch, not a review, very disappointing after all the other high quality reviews on this channel

We took delivery of a 20 plate IONIQ last Friday and for us the nicest feature by far is auto hold. Entrance into the village is a clutch grinding hill with a traffic light at the top, which the Hyundai makes short shrift of. Push on the brake (if you can remember it after one-pedal driving), auto hold lights green, and no more rolling back.

love mine, had it 5 months now. it's quick enough for me coming from a slow petrol Qashqai. it's a very nice car to drive, the tech is good and it has a good app to pre-heat the car and even alerts you if you forget to lock the car. I hear the rapid charging is slower than the first generation. I've only rapid charged a few times but it's noticeably slower in winter only get 22kw even when battery was quite low. Now in summer it picks up to 44kw when battery is low.

@@WelcomeToDERPLAND Hi, yes I still have it but my lease is up in Feb. I have very much enjoyed the car. I have grown to like the styling even the front 'grill'. I especially love the efficiency I have never reset one of the trips and I'm on 4.7 miles per kwh going into my second winter. It will probably be 4.6 miles per kwh after the full 2 years which is class leading. I have decided not to by it at the end of lease but have ordered the refresh Kona 64kwh which I hope I don't live to regret. I prefer the ioniq interior 100% and not that fond of SUV's. My reasons for not buying the ioniq was its 170 mile real world range and a rapid charge speed that is one of the slowest on the market now. If they did the Ioniq in 64kwh I would buy that I am sure. We have used the car for 4 UK holidays and several 300 mile trips in a day where we needed to stop and rapid charge and it has been fine. It is only that we would have to buy this car and we want the next car we buy to be able to do European road trips and I don't think this car us suitable for that amount of miles a day. The range/charges would take to long for us. If you can charge at home, are a 4 person max household (boot space) and not looking to euro Road trip this car is very much worth considering.

Yeah, I'm currently planning on buying a car in the coming months, not sure If I'll finance or Lease, but this car is currently at the top of my lists since it's so much more affordable than the Kona/E-Niro or Ioniq 5/EV6 coming out next year, I really wanted to get an E-Niro/Konda or Ioniq 5 but the prices were just 10~20,000$ too steep for me, so I'll be having to fall back on this or a Leaf it seems. (they wanted 56,000$ 1,100$/monthly 72m for the Ioniq 5 and 41~51,000$ for the E-niro/Kona) The range does seem inadequate for long road trips, unless you don't mind taking long breaks to charge multiple times, which I might be able to stomach if it means cheap recharges compared to gas (its 5$ a gal. here!) and a reasonable total & monthly pricetag. I want to own the car outright but leasing might be a smarter option given that EV technology is constantly getting better and at the end of a 3~ year lease on an Ioniq, I might be able to finance an Ioniq 5 or maybe even something else, who knows, maybe the car market bubble will finally pop and prices will drop significantly or maybe some revolutionary EV tech will come out making current EV tech obsolete & cheap in comparison in the next decade!

@@WelcomeToDERPLAND it's hard to judge what the future will look like. I have been waiting for prices to come down for years. I probably started researching EV's in 2017 and since then prices in the UK have just gone up not down. We seem to have hit a tipping point here and demand looks to be out stripping supply and shows no sign of changing any time soon. Prices of second hand EV's have even appreciated! Personally i think prices will remain high for 2-3 years until many more factories are pumping out more cells and cars besides just Tesla's

Is it better than the ioniq, given the choice of the ioniq or a 39kwh Kona (not accounting for the better range of the 38kwh ioniq) which would you choose ? We've currently got a 2016 30kwh Tekna leaf that we've had since 2017, we're even considering a 40kwh leaf and it's difficult for us to decide between that and the ioniq. A reply would be greatly appreciated !

Though most of the content was relevant and useful I had the impression that Rory has a little smirk now and again that seemed to indicate that perhaps reviewing such an "ordinary car" is ... just perhaps ... a tiny bit below him! It's fair enough to make a wry comment about performance when reviewing a car that purports to be a performance vehicle but when the car in question has no such pretensions it just seems crass. Rory clearly has professional TV presenting style but tripped up badly on the facts when describing the charging set up. The description of the car's onboard charger rate has absolutely nothing to do with the speed at which it can charge from a DC Rapid charger! For those not familiar with such things the onboard charger is only relevant when charging from AC chargers (at a very much slower rate). FullyCharged should re-edit this section to avoid confusion.

About the tone of the review... there are quite a few electric cars that accelerate rapidly, and as this car has a 'sport' mode, so I think it was reasonable for Rory to point out that people should not buy it thinking it would respond like a Tesla... my 2013 Leaf has two modes (eco and normal), if the non-eco one was called 'sport' mode, I would have been pretty disappointed with the actual performance. I was also pleasantly surprised that he recommended the Kona instead, which I think was honest and useful, even though it would not have endeared him to the Ioniq marketing team. Each to their own though I suppose. Best wishes :-)

From the video Bjorn Nyland did on this car, it actually charges slower on a rapid charger than the old Ioniq, (as in lower KW). I know at the time he was planning to do a follow up to see if the old Ioniq would actually be better for long journeys, but don't know if he ever did.

Whats a 7.2 kw onboard charger got to do with rapid charging? One of the most important pieces of information about a new electric car fumbled. The presenter needs to learn about electric cars before trying to tell others about them. We also know a family car isn't going to be as fast or agile as a supercar!

Usual great review - thanks Rory. I think the grille would look a lot better body coloured. I test drove the 28 kwh one and it was OK but pretty expensive and other than being electric a bit difficult to fall in love with. The improved range very useful though. Hyundai really have nailed getting the last mile of range out of each kwh. I had a Zoe and the worst thing was stopping it in the wet - just too heavy. When EVs start to lose weight they will out compete ICE on cornering too.

Excellent family car. Efficiency is superb. Cheaper than a Kona, more space than a Zoe and far more efficient than a Leaf. Slower charging but I think this will prove useful for it's battery life and most will charge at home overnight. A comfortable drive with all the toys just not the hype.

He did. Unfortunately the prevailing attitude amongst the majority of motorists is that nothing must get in their way when they are driving on the road, particularly pedestrians, horses and cyclists. It's one reason for so much road rage and high blood pressure.

@@Merritt7278 Thanks for the updated review Marc, I'm actually looking to get an EV aswell and originally was trying to get a Kona/E-Niro or even Ioniq 5, but after meeting with some dealerships and negotiating prices, they were just far too high, and stock was always low/out. (They wanted 56,000 base on the Ioniq 5, 1,100$ a month for 5~ years to finance it | 41,000~51,000 on an E-Niro for EX/Premium trim - 350$ a month lease for 3 years with 5K down. | all Hyundai dealerships I checked with were out of stock for Kona EV's) So I've revised my options & am now looking at potentially getting one of these or a Leaf, but the Leaf's Chademo charger has put me off for now, so this one is currently at the top of my list.

2020, I test drove this car in October 2019. This video is a year late. This Ioniq charges slower than the old car (almost two times slower actually). It's great for local trips I think but charging will get slow on long trips

I ordered the Ioniq a few days ago. I felt it was a better choise compared to the Kona. The Kona felt smaller (boot at least) but it can also have load on the roof. Since the Ioniq is going out of production all the cars are sold as the premium model which has everything included. The Ioniq premium (included winter wheels) cost about the same as the entry level Kona Trend Standard Range. So it has similar battery, range and performance as the Ioniq. But feature vice it seems to be lacking compared to the Ioniq premium. So we went with the Ioniq.

Great review, I've had mine for 3 months now and I agree with everything said. One thing worth noting is the price as these regularly go on cheap lease deals, I got mine for £1100 down £195 per month for a 2 year lease. With running costs you will struggle to find a cheaper car, even a bog standard ford fiesta is more expensive. Admittedly the current Ioniq lease deals are about £50 a month more than i'm paying, but they are still cheap for the car you are getting. The list price might be similar to the Kona or Leaf but most people lease EVs nowadays and both of these are significantly more expensive

Having a 7.2kW charger doesn’t correspond to the speed of charging at a rapid. Apart from that a good balanced review. For clarity, the monthly price of mine was £250 v £450 for the Kona.....so it was a no brainer. The ride is ok, the performance average, getting locked out when you leave the car on and get out of the car WITH the key is annoying as hell (have to open the fob, get the key out, removed the lock cover on the door handle), plus stories of 12V Batteries dying are more than just anecdotal, but also occur in other EVs. It’s a car that has enough range for me and on a good tariff at home it translates to 1p/mile ‘fuel’ costs. (OctopusGo 5p/kWh, getting 5 miles per kWh), at £1.20/litre an ICE equivalent would need to get ............540 mpg ish. Great to see your realism, positivity and enthusiasm on Fullycharged Rory.

It takes approximately 15 minutes or 75% longer to charge 21 kWh on the new Ioniq (34.3) minutes compared to the old Ioniq (19.6 minutes).

Going into a curve (bend) at an inappropriate speed can be a problem in any vehicle. Being electric poses no larger a problem than does a gas or diesel powered car or truck. The driver always needs to be aware of how fast they are moving, their car's capabilities, and their own driving abilities. Yes, if a car that can't go as fast as a different car in theory it would handle the curve better, but I don't know of any road-worthy cars that are so underpowered as to be safe in all driving situations.

The IONIQ does as well on the highway as it does in the city, as many owners will tell you. The first generation was loved for it ability to drive efficiently at highway speeds, something that has not changed with the new model, with the big difference being that Hyundai has sacrificed charging speed for more battery capacity in the new car. The efficiency is so that the Hyundai IONIQ and its ~40 kWh battery have beaten the 62 kWh Nissan LEAF e+ in real life tests when the speed goes above the 90 kph limit.

Good review but bit confusing on the charging front. These are great cars, friend of mine has an early one with nearly 60,000 km on the clock without one hint of a problem..just don’t know why they didn’t do the upgrade to the 64 kWh battery as all the others in the family have..for people who don’t want to go down the SUV/crossover/ shape..OK I did with the e-Niro but not everyone wants that..They could have had a Mondeo/Passat competitor with a unique position in the market in terms of range. Missed opportunity I believe.

That noise synthesiser sounds like the sound maker on the Gogoro EV road scooter. I like how you can disable it if you want.

Did you state prices? Online this looks considerably cheaper than a Kona and for people who just want A to B in a family type hatchback car this is brilliant introduction to EVs. I mean 190mile range means you coudl probably do 99% of trips electric and only need engine when you can't find a charger on long road trip. Very impressive and a good review
