eat pork/duck/chicken rice at the open air market if u guys in Miri.right in the middle of the city. Canada Hill for the First Oil Lady monument and its also a local hiking spot for the locals. Batu Niah National Park is a must go as well which is before reaching Miri city.

What the coffee grinder man said is"I fry the coffee"..but him being Chinese so his pronunciation isn't clear because their 'r' always sounds like 'l'. So the raw beans are imported from Indonesia but he himself roasted the beans. There are 2 version..roasted with margerin and sugar (thus, the shiny look of the beans )or just roasted with sugar. They roast it in sugar to give it the smokey aroma and flavour. How come Ken is not around? The small bun filled with meat is called kompia..filled with minced pork. I spent my schooling years in Sibu and the chinese food is fantastic..too bad its hard to find in Kuching. Majority are of Foochow descendent.

17:48 you are wrong, steve. they speak english to you because you are mat salleh, they switch channel automatically. with iban, speaks iban. with malay, speaks malay. with chinese, speaks mandarin/dialects. see mat salleh, speaks english. some, can even speak melanau. 😁 (of course, not all are so multi-lingual lah~ it depends on their environment) 18:18 you noticed. this is one of the many differences between peninsula and east malaysia. 19:30 rice, noodle, porridge, dim sum, satay ... we can take anything and everything for any meal, be it breakfast, lunch, dinner. 😁 21:01 ivana, he said it's 70 cents in mandarin. then after you asked him in bahasa, he replied in malay that it is tujuh puluh sen (70 cents with a strong iban accent). so steve, he does speak malay, just it has a strong sarawakian accent that you are not used to. 😁 25:08 sugar and butter/margerine are used in the roasting process. you wont taste any sweetness because the sugar is so caramelized that it tastes bitter or a bit sourish sometimes.

Nice video Steve and Ivana! That was Kong Piah you all ate at the night market 😂 I am glad you all noticed how tolerant and harmonious Sarawakian are to each other cultures and religion. It is uniquely Sarawakian. Sibu has a large Chinese Foochow (originally from Fujian province in China) majority population which reflects in the food and culture. You would notice that the older generation does not speak much Malay because Sarawak was under the British rule after the Brooke’s until 1963 when it joins Malaysia as a sovereign country (not a state). It was closer to the 1980s before Bahasa Malaysia was made compulsory here. Thus we still retains immigration laws that are different than the rest of the states in Malaysia. I am from Mukah but currently resides in the US (Indiana). My family is a mix of Melanau, Iban, Bidayuh, and Chinese. Some of my families are Muslims and some are Christians. We eat together, celebrate different festivities together like the true Sarawakian way. Enjoy the land of the Hornbills and may the experiences and the warmth of the Sarawakian people stay with you all forever.

English language is the main language used at the days before 70s and after that the central government changed the education policy in Sarawak. So, many mid to elderly Chinese and some Ibans can’t speak Malay. But now younger Chinese can speak Malay

Agree with Steve that market video is the best. In fact, l have a special liking to this super duper interesting vlog. I have learned so much from watching this video. In fact some of the veggies, fruits, newspaper wrapped chickens and ducks can't be found in Peninsula Malaysia. This indoor market is indeed massive and there are lots of stuff to browse around. watched that nasik lemak..it is Sarawak styled of nasik lemak.less spicy.Mostly nasik lemak in sarawak they add in salted fish.BTW..Sarawak Malay in Sarawak are different .In Sarawak herself we have Melayu Miri/MelayuKuching/ Melayu persisir/ Melayu Semantan ..which have their own differences in pronouce..welcome to Sarawak..state with so many diversities

in my childhood days the drum in the mosque really came into action during the ramadan month, it was struck repeatedly as loud as it can to mark the break of fasting just before the azan, nowadays it's just the azan that mark the break of fast. other than ramadan month the drum just hung there silently through the year

The drum from the mosque is to signal the community for the call of prayers (azan). You just knock the drum in repeated style to inform the muslim the call of prayers which is 5 times a day.

4:37 Sisik Ikan kek lapis is my favourite. The sweet-sour kind. 😋 9:06 It's a beautiful mosque. It is so great that it incorporated local designs. 22:45 You captured the very essence of Sarawak's life. That is simply how we are and who we are. Not that we don't have a few scums among us but their number is tiny. Not sure if "tolerance" is the word... more about "acceptance" imho - we-accept-that-you-are-different-and-we-respect-you-for-that. This is not just in cities like Kuching and Miri but small towns like Sibu too. I am so glad you come and experience a different side of Malaysia. 😊 Really enjoyed this video.

Red Banana is rare and very rich taste, if selling outside Sarawak it will be very expensive. Kong Pia origin from Sibu, Roti John isn't popular in S'wak, Chicken Butt/Tail is one of the TOP choice local snack here. Did you notice there's no 'Ramly' Burger stall in Sarawak?

It's very common to find religious diversity/harmony throughout Sarawak. Even in most kopitiam/food court you can find a mixed of chinese & malay food stall side by side and we normally dine in together !!

Steve, the local mosque is Malay architecture with engraved local Malaysian flora features. Btw it is not Indonesian but you can find it in some Indonesian mosques belong to Malay communities there like in Riau and Sumatera. Traditionally all Malay mosques using the same architectures made from wood, however, since is not easy to build and costly it has been replaced with bricks and with influences of Arabs, Turkish or Central Asians eg Putrajaya Mosque. There are mosques in Malacca with influence of India and China. Btw the drum you found in the mosque is actually we call in Malay as 'beduk'. Many old mosques in Malaysia, Indonesia etc still have it to use before to call for prayers (azan). They also use it to announce of iftar (breaking fast) , for sahur (breakfast before fasting) and also when someone in the village dies.

The drum is called beduk. Ancient ago they use to call upon the prayer(azan/adzhan) . Now they don't really use it. Btw thank you for this video, another great info about one of the state in Sarawak where most we haven't been or seen. This is beautiful market. Love

You guys should try the most expensive freshwater fish in Sarawak/Malaysia ..the "empurau"😋, if you take a boat ride to Kapit upriver from sibu jetty(perhaps stay a night), you might get it at a cheaper price😅, steam the fish to taste it's natural sweetness and deep fry the huge scales which taste like seaweed👍

25:12 I think what he meant is the beans you bought goes good with sugar. There are also beans if light roasted is better without sugar. When it's good with sugar, you can substitute with condensed milk and it will be superb!

In miri church is next to mosque. U cant find something like this in peninsular Malaysia. Only in sarawak or borneo we could live together peacefully sitting at the same table and even under the same roof without any problems despite the diffrences in religion, race and culture 👍🏻

I thought someone had explained about d drum u guys saw in d mosque. In d old days, before d presence of loud speaker, d drum in many sizes n versions r used to call for d 5 times of prayers in Islam. Hope u got a better explanation to this.

Back in the day when there was no microphone, most mosques used drums or wood to make sound as a sign for morning daily prayer when people are still sleeping and when at night when there's not so much light.

Hi Ivana & Steve 👋🏻 this is definitely a complete course for food vlog 👍 the food looks super delicious , love the morning market so much there's so much to see and shop 🤣 it's humongous 👍 I might go there everyday if I visit Sibu. The unique flower is from papaya , I would boiled the flower a few minutes then you can eat like 'ulam' with sambal belacan or make 'kerabu bunga papaya' really delicious but a bit bitter after taste 😋 the night market was awesome place for 'makan2' 🤣 love to hear Steve's malay accent 👍🤣 the coffee too..really amazing so cheap yet delicious 👍 welldone guys on this food episode I really enjoyed watching 🥰😘❤️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

the drum is used to remind people the prayers time... also there are some mosque in Malaysia use the drum to inform the community that someone is died on that particular community....

The drum at the mosque that you saw is called bedok. I'm not sure is it called in West MY, but that's what we in Kuching called it. The function is to sound it before the Maghrib Azan (called to prayer) in Ramadhan to notify that we can start eating. Back in the days, we also sound the drum before announcing of someone's death. It is still practice in rural villages as normally for Muslim village, masjid is normally the meeting/go to point.

0:53 long long time ago, we only buy live chicken. frozen ones are not good, at all. according to my parents, tak sedap. especially my late father, he's the picky one. 😁 3:10 stinky bean, sedaaaaaaappppp! 3:31 i would avoid kek lapis that are too colourful..😁 stick to neutral colour ones. green is ok, if it is pandan flavour. 11:23 pulut panggang, 2 types : plain or with sambal dried prawn fillings. i like the one with fillings. 13:45 i prefer white coffee, because it is not roasted with sugar. gives you a more pure coffee taste. some malaysian coffee drinkers dont like it because it is not "kaw" enough for them. 15:00 🤣🤣🤣🤣 the Dodos really very cute!!! 15:40 he meant to say, the beans are imported from indonesia but he fries (roasts/processes) it here in sibu. (process involved : roast/fry with butter + sugar.)

Tamu or market is the heart of Sarawak town. To really experience the essence of Sarawak town, you guys can visit Tamu market. BTW, have you guys been to Kapit? A nice rural town accessible by road.

I love indonesian coffee. It has certain richness and earthy quality. The one in mostly in Europe, not so much. It has this weird fruity note. Ohhh and Brazilian coffee too. Their espresso is delish

Generally Malaysians speak Bahasa. However we might have issue understanding bahasa indonesia due to the slang though they might be quite similar

About the drum, in the old days there were no loudspeakers. So they hit the drums before making the call to prayers to inform the people that it was time to pray.

Steve did you see any fly at the wet market? Other place wet market have many but in Sibu very hard to spot the fly.
