Great finds John! The property owners are very fortunate to have you searching this site. Your integrity is of the highest degree and that is so important with this type of work. They will be very happy with your results as we are! Thanks for bringing us along , can’t wait to see what’s ahead!
Thanks Greg. Definitely trust is a major part of detecting. Some landowners don’t care what you find others are very protective. Don’t get me wrong I’d love to find a million pound hoard but I don’t do it to make money, I detect for the thrill and the footage!! If I have to hand over everything to the landowner that’s fine for me and even better if it has been in their family for generations
So happy your the one to get this site John. Your definately the best person to get it as your a very honest and transparent detectorist. Can't wait to see the finds you uncover from it
Thanks for the kind words Ian and I’m glad you enjoyed!! Have yourself a wonderful New Year and hopefully see you back watching in the early New Year!! Best wishes to you and yours for a healthy and prosperous 2023!
Awesome John, a nice dig today, a little bit of everything, PLUS this excitement of your new permission and it having a great historical site. I am excited for you and will be for all your digs here. I would love to sit on a rise with a view of the fort area and watch a panorama of the last 1000 years go by, I think of this often when I am at interesting places. On to the next...
Thanks OB. I wish I could show you all the view from the fort because it’s pretty spectacular even 400yrs after it’s demise. Easy to see the layout and how it would have all worked
Good to see you back out doing what you do best finding and sharing with us your historical artefacts and copious knowledge on them. Have a happy Christmas and looking forward to seeing what the new permissions bring
I just love watching so many RU-vidrs like you, that do metal detecting or bottle dump digging etc, but I am amazed at how many of you don't have a pack of tools in your vehicles for planned trips, not to mention the occasional impromptu adventures! As an American, as others have said, I am "jealous" of the amazing things you can find! Thank you for sharing!!
I learned from my grandfather how to make a ring by holding a coin on its edge and hammering it as you rotate it. It makes a very distinctive pattern and I recognized it right away. He learned it in the military and I made a few while I was in the US Airforce. Done right it will split the coin down the middle sort of and the legend and date will be inside the ring. Then you cut out the center when you get it to size. I made my friends wedding ring that way. It apparently was a thing soldiers do going back a long time.
I love this..I'm so glad I've found you. I enjoyed history & you are amazing with it. Cnt waitvto settle down in bed then I watch. Thankyou for sharing xx
Yep…I’m 67 years old, and if I bloodied myself every time I forgot something…I’d be a bloody mess continually. It’ll be ok. You drop your finds quite often…lol. You dropped your piece of hammered coin, twice, just as I was writing this. It’s just another trait that we love in you, my Scottish Detectorist friend. Blessings from the beautiful hills of Tennessee.
Never apologize for rambling. Your rambling is an education for us Yankees. I just had a video from Dig Dan thrown at me by YT. He doesn’t have your knowledge base and lacks your ability to flourish in facts and he’s lacking your unique sense of humor. It’s your gift of gab that makes your following so successful and continuing to grow…30.7k today. Blessings from Tennessee.
Don't know if anybody chimed in on the coin you found at the 12:00 mark but I would like to add that it appears that it was in the beginning stages of being hammered round the edge to be made into a ring. Usually done with softer metal coins like silver, but can be done with others, too.
Love your channel, and I’m able understand you when you speak. I’ve had some difficulty with some channels from England even though I speak English living in the states. You are so knowledgeable in everything especially your commentary when it comes to history.
Thanks for the kind words and I’m glad I’m understandable!! Much appreciated… maybe it’s your undiscovered Scottish ancestry gives you an ear for my accent!! 👂
Jeepers! It was a wee bit chilly up there then? 😬 Same down this way too...really chilly, then, warm into the new year. Nothing as chilly as that though. weird
I certainly enjoyed this very historic site! And I have ancestors from there that go back to the 1200s. So it makes it even more fascinating! Thanks Kindly and Many Blessings with Great Luck there in the future! I’ll be watching and I certainly subscribed! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
@@thescottishdetectorist it’s the one place on earth I want to visit more than any other. And being a detectorist here in south east Pennsylvania I’ve found several dozen King George II and IIIs. The earliest being 1729 and a half dozen Spanish reales. And as you well know, for every good thing there is a pouch of foil, pull tabs, bottle caps and mixed junk. But it’s worth it all. I so much enjoy your adventures and want to see you find those museum artifacts. Thanks Kindly Brother and Many Blessings! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
One of the videos I watched you found a lead Owl. I would say Folk Art or being as Owls have more superstition around them than feathers, it could be a talisman. It would not be a very solid Cane Topper, but something to ward off evil I can certainly see. With you forgetting things to take with you, I can empathize. I'm a Fly Fisher with a board of stuff. One day I was driving by an outside Trash Bin when I saw a brand new Drum Cart lying beside it. Sort of like one of those "Pull behind you," carts like a Golf bad. It still had the cardboard labels. I use it to hold all of my fishing stuff in my car. If I grab it, I have everything I own and need! With your stuff try an old Golf bag. You can buy used ones cheap, all of your stuff will fit in it and get yourself an adaptor/charger you can attach to your car battery and then you can charge your coil from your car.
This site potentially could have from WWII back to the Bronze Age. Very exciting detecting! Were those crop marks showing round buildings? And if so, how old would those be? They look like Iron Age huts in Dorset.
Congratulations on the new permission. May the fields of Perthshire continue to yield many interesting and ancient finds for you and the other Scottish Detectorists in 2023. The little round white porcelain find is a paint pan to hold and mix watercolour paint in. Probably Victorian or Edwardian in age. :)
Totally congrats on your new permission mate, so much looking forward to receiving spectacular views from it, in the near future 😀, good finds already wow. Regards Kelvin.
Enjoyed the best of but seeing you out on a new permission always exciting and I enjoyed hearing about the history that goes with the site. Don’t go down the path of a tripod. Extra stuff to cart around and it takes extra time to setup when you could be detecting. Your format is perfect and natural as it is. Have a great Christmas and new year to you, your family and all the Scottish detectorists.
You need an "I'm going detecting" bag near the door. Make sure everything's ready to go when you've got home, then just pick it up when you're heading out! The only thing you'll forget then is the bag...or the metal detector...😉 Could've sworn I'd already watched this one, but nope. I'm forgetful as well!
So excited to see you on the on the new fields and to see you detecting again good luck 🎄Merry Christmas to you and your family and your detecting friends all the best for 2023 🍺cheers
Hi John. You're doing brilliant buddy. The best RU-vidr to come out of Scotland. I don't know any others mind but surely you must be 😄 Massively appreciate you and the guys. The content is of the finest quality. Planning on going to Spring Detectival so may bump into you again if you're going. Me being the wee guy passing when the van broke down 😄
Don't be throwing shade on William Wallace. My dear Granny will come back from the grave and haunt you! As a boy of four I went to live with my grandparents in sunny California. Every day I heard how wonderful Scotland, the Scots and all things Scottish are. And...........how horrible the B....y English were. 😃 Marion Wallace, born in Ayr in 1887 and came to America in 1897. Fiercly proud of her heritage.
I have had great permissions, Battle of bara (Robert the Bruce), William Wallace camp site, a few other battlefields, A few castle grounds and didn't find anything great.
I’ve been there Kevin. I’ve had permissions near Battle of Sherrifmuir, battle of Killiekrankie, battle of Nechtasmere and found heehaw 😂 that’s detecting I suppose
Going Way back in History Scotland Ireland and England are older parts of My Family History. Watching things like this makes Me feel more connected to the land and History. Thanks
I'm from Perth and love our local history. Always been interested with the idea of metal detecting since we have so many sites in the area connected to Scottish history. Have you ever tried the site near Kinclaven where Wallace attacked the castle there? There are still some ruins there. The area around Bertha would have been interesting to scan before they started building houses.
Hi there, yes I often say Perthshire is the cradle of civilisation! Lots of amazing sites. Kinclaven is a scheduled monument so off limits and now the diggers are in at Bertha I think that’s also off limits, but I thinks there‘a roman sites there too and Iron Age
@The Scottish Detectorist ah unfortunate but understandable with the castle. Yeah Bertha camp obviously, I believe that was investigated a few times in the early 1900s but never since. The area of woodland at Bertha was such fun to explore before the diggers got in and overflowing with wildlife. I think they found an iron age settlement whilst working on the new area for the bridge and had archaeologists in for a couple of weeks. I guess anything recorded on OS maps is difficult to gain access to? There are a few iron age areas on Old Gallows Road passed the golf driving range. The land there seems used for horses mostly but rarely used in my times walking there. If I was a landowner I'd say on ya go! I'd be fascinated to see what lies in the Sma Glen along the old military road route.
Hello from a very very cold East Tennessee USA. Great video I would spend as much time as I could on that site. There is gold and more silver in those fields. That’s just my opinion for what it’s worth. Stay safe and have a great holiday season. Keep looking it’s there somewhere.
Great new permission and hunt John! Might that be an old cannon ball? Looks similar to Civil War cannon balls detected in the US, just older looking. Stay warm and happy hunting!
Thanks Jeff. I did wonder about a cannonball but as far as I’m aware all of ours were spheres whereas this one is more egg… dare I say …. Grenade shaped 😯 💥
, studying the area is essential for research, I would try a scan with geo radar, it could give good results. Great video. Happy searching. Udine - ITALIA
Many thanks. Quite unexpected I can assure you!! A week ago I though there was no way I’d get to 8,900 for January and now I’ve smashed it! Have a great new year and best wishes to you
Oh dear hope Sneaky John get a Christmas Gift to help with his memory to things not To forget to detect with. New permission Looks very promising, an it would be a really Good idea to check the stream. Now today Its only getting brighter day by day Pagan Word in Danish for Christmas are Jul Celebrating the time stops getting darker Merry Jul to your family 😜🔝❤️
In Ireland it's against the law to detect anywhere near a historical sites. You don't know how Lucky you are.By the way my name is Paul from Dublin Ireland. My mams name will probably be attached. But I haven't missed one of your videos ever. You have a great knowledge and I have learned alot from you.
Much appreciated Paul. I’m glad you’re enjoying. Yes we are very lucky and have some great permissions too. Even more great permissions to come so fingers crossed some epic finds to come in 2023!! Best wishes and happy new year
Hi John, yep 2nd coin George 2nd half penny, I found my first exactly the same a couple of weeks ago, hammered for some reason. I was told not uncommon but it’s the first time I’ve found like that with the raised edge. Would also be interested to find out why? Thanks for the upload!👍
Congratulations on the coin. I’ve had a few Georgian coins like this over the years that have been pressed to give that raised edge but really don’t know why. A weight? A gaming piece? Hard to tell
the lead at 47 minutes looks like when you cast an item in a mould, the square bit being the filling side and the little point is where the molten material goes into a mould and was joined onto the item that was cast... just my opinion ive done a fair bit of ring casting..
An addictive hobby , I tried it a few years ago but someone borrowed my detector and never returned it !? That site is great with a rich history obviously good luck with it !
Looks like a very interesting permission you've found, some nice finds popping out if you weight and measure the musket balls with a calliper, you can date em more homework for you.
Defacing an image of "the" monarch is treason. Great finds 👍 I can tell your excited to be out again 😂 I bet your subscription goes up on or after Christmas with all the people that will have new metal detectors.
@@thescottishdetectorist Spoiled, lucky or both. It doesn’t matter at all, I just truly enjoy the opportunity to share vicariously in your findings. It’s first class content you are putting out. I really enjoy the little history lessons to put it all in context as well. 👍
