I’m starting sewing from scratch✨🧵| equipment cost, fabric grain, first project 

Thank you so much for the tips!! These are game-changers. I haven't gotten round to making/getting a pin cushion yet so I've just been sticking them back in the pinwheel thing one-by-one. The off-white thread and off-white/black zipper tip is going to be a such a time-saver for sudden projects / emergencies because otherwise I would be buying them one at a time each time. I will also be readying my mindset for the reality of mockups 🙋‍♀️ I appreciate your tips so much 🙏 and I'm sure other sewists, both new and seasoned, can benefit from them too. @@caddberrie If you want to practice your hand-sewing you could start with small projects. I strongly suggest using a thimble for all your handwork. It should fit the middle finger of your dominant hand. The size of the thimble will match your ring size (ie, mine is a size 8). You could also cut the tip of a leather glove - the thimble should just cover your first digit so you can't see the nail. Thimbles take a while to get used to, but it makes a huge difference to the quality of your hand-stitching. I also recommend getting a pad or ball of pure beeswax (I found mine at the health food store). Cut the thread to the length you need - usually the span from your hand to your midsection, when holding your arm straight to the side. Then run the thread over the wax. It strengthens the thread and reduces the friction during a stitch. _Some hand-project suggestions (can also be done with your machine):_ One I liked was a wrist pincushion (as long as you have a strap of some sort that fits your wrist or a clip-on bracelet... you attach two loops to the bottom of the cushion and then slide the bracelet through). That way you can have the flexibility to use the pincushion either on your wrist or use it on it's own. You could also make your own pattern weights. You can use something like rice or beans to stuff them. They can be small, they can be large. Mine are the small pyramid shaped ones - there are tutorials galore for so many different kinds. My favorite project was to make my own "housewife" / "housiff" / portable sewing kit. You can make it in whatever configuration you want (there are dozen of tutorials on YT). For example - the next one I'm going to make will have a few "pages" of felt for sewing needles, needle threaders, space for my snips, space for my thimble, small pincushion, thread, and a buttoned pocket to hold my pad of beeswax. A sewing kit makes traveling with your work so much easier. It's also a really useful thing to have in your carryon. And, for bonus points, you can use your leftover fabric to make them. There's also making a soft-sided 'waste' thread cup. You make a longer end that will sit underneath the sewing machine - the 'cup' hangs off the edge of the table. It's nice to have a little waste basket to catch the threads and seam allowance trimmings you'll be creating while you're sitting at the machine. If you want a quick machine project then you could make an aesthetic dust cover for your sewing machine. Then there's things like aprons. And pressing hams and sleeve rolls. Basically? You can make your own sewing kit... go have fun.

I've been meaning to learn hand-sewing as well (don't think i could avoid it even if i wanted to 😆) and now i have great pointers and beginner projects to start with!! The most appealing project to me right now is the pincushion and the 'cup' the catches all the thread bits and small pieces of fabric because i've been discarding everything onto the floor. Oh wow thanks for sharing! I think it's gonna be a game changer once you start being able to make clothes that fit you. Mindset wise (which is arguably the most important part), you probably already have the patience, creativity and attention to detail from crocheting and knitting so I think you're gonna do great with sewing too 💪 I'm so glad you're gonna start sewing!

Thank you so much! The tote bag tutorial did a french seam so I just followed along but the first time round I totally did not account for the inner fabric edge being longer than the second seam I was sewing down. I thought the first seam would just be magically tucked into the second one 😆

When I was a kid, I sent a care package to US soldiers in Viet Nam. I don't get it. Is there a change in Vietnamese politics? No obligation to answer.

@nmjerry ahh got it! Yes there are plenty of competing fashion brands in Vietnam and you can 100% start a fashion business of your own. And then whether you can survive whilst competing with the plethora of options already available/ cheap imports is a different story. Economically speaking, Vietnam has developed a lot since the 70s/80s and is very much a mixed economy now. If you've some combination of wits, guts, and money, you're free to start your own thing. No shortage of entrepreneurs and budding businesses here 😆 The reason it's hard to find clothes for me local to where i live (Hanoi) is because i just happen to be outside the size range for most fashion brands that produce for the Vietnamese demographic. I dont blame them though; it makes sense for businesses to cater towards the majority.
