Road Trip is, I believe their 4th most viewed video, and in one fairly recent Webchat, Geoff described it as a true organic success, having gained viral traction on its own over time rather than catching a particular wave of popularity.
The "seatbelt alarm" at 12:32 wasn't actually created with any of the guys' voices, it was actually Geoff's pitch pipe! After such a long break in the music they needed to get their pitch again, and Geoff found a super creative and funny way to incorporate it into the skit. Also look at Geoff's face right after Eli buckles his seatbelt - they're all incredible actors, but where Eli excels in voice acting, Geoff could totally be a stage or screen actor.
Geoff have all ready done musical work before voiceplay and so have his wife. In the video where he talks about his's wifes hearing loss, he talk about that musical work
Within the last couple years, Geoff was asked in an interview what VP would perform if they had a chance to play for the president, and he said they'd do Road Trip. It's a hit every time, every audience. Someone said Earl actually dislikes Tiptoe Through the Tulips but you'd never guess that from his performance. They wanted something that would be silly for anyone, not just those who remember Tiny Tim.
Their cover of "Grim Grinning Ghosts" (From Disney's "Haunted Mansion" attraction) and their Phantom of the Opera medley (with Rachel Potter) also feature Tony.
For sure! I think Mortius in particular would like that one. I'd also love to see his reaction to VP doing Elvira - I don't think they ever made a music video for it but the stage recordings are fab.
Speaking of chickens, when I was looking at other covers of ghost riders in the sky someone recommended checking out ghost chickens in the sky. It is a parody and it was on Hee Haw probably back when I was a kid. I recommend it just for the guffaws and watching the other people on stage trying to hold it together while this man is delivering this nonsense in deadpan.
I was going to suggest this one. During a Zoom call tonight with Layne and Tony, the Chicken Song came up and Tony started recalling the ways Layne would try to make him laugh by changing up his part. That was at the beginning, so Tony would have to try and keep from breaking up the whole rest of the song.
As I think I said somewhere else, this was filmed on the Sing-Off Tour - Home Free did a music video for Story of My Life at the same time, with the random black and white scenes. HF's equivalent of this is Guilty Pleasures, which is a skit they also did on the Sing-Off tour, but never did an official video of, although there are many fan recordings. If you ever feel like watching it, please don't go for the Derailed version first - people like to suggest it because it's funny, but if you've never seen how it's supposed to go first, you miss half the fun. I think one of the best versions is the one titled 20140308 Home Free - Guilty Pleasures
Yeah, something else they have discussed on Patreon is the way that The Sing Off was a little restrictive in their format and vision, so the more theatrical things like this that were Voiceplay's strength didn't really get a chance to shine. The Sing Off tour (where this video was from) was a better showcase of what VoicePlay was all about back then than the actual competition was. The Sing Off competition was certainly a good thing for them, but they may have done even better had they been given full creative control.
Some other ones you might love from this era are The Chicken Song (it's amazing, and arguably more hilarious than this) and Elvira, Geoff actually arranged this first and helped Home Free to arrange their version so it's quite good!! There _are_ many versions of their Elvira out there with different members but I would suggest the performance Brandon Turner posted. That one has Tony in it and be sure to watch Geoff when Earl sings lead :)
Also everyone thought Earl hit a bass note but it was actually Geoff that did that when he turns away to make it look like Earl did it. I love Geoff's ending note.
If you ever are feeling down, WATCH THIS VIDEO! I have probably watched it 20 times and it never fails to put a smile on my face!! 😁 You have to admit, it put a smile on your face too and made you forget all your troubles, if only for 16 minutes and 48 seconds! Great reaction to a great video! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
If you have seen their Phantom of the Opera you have seen Tony with them. I think you missed some of the humour by stopping to speak. This is one to just watch and enjoy. It's a parody of one of their road trips on tour. And was always a hit on the live shows.
This is one of my all time favorite videos from Voice Play! And if you haven't watched Phantom Of The Opera with Tony & Rachel Potter singing the leads, you REALLY need to react to that one! It's beautiful! 💖
I can't tell ya how many times I've re-watched this. It's perfect for a day like today, just a horrific work day. Being able to laugh is just golden. Thank you so much for the reaction, loved it!!
Hello Mortius. Now that we are in 'the month of Halloween' I'd like to request that you react to another "oldie" video from Voiceplay (with Tony in it) Please react to their version of Grim Grinning Ghosts. I thoroughly enjoy watching your joyfulness
Musically speaking, the best thing with Tony in it is Phantom of the Opera, hands down. Nothing else from that long ago is even close to being as good. Road Trip, granted, is in a different category (it's basically a comedy skit). Along those lines, see also the Chicken Song.
When Geoff was blowing into the pitch pipe for the seat belt alarm, that tone and meter is referencing the warning sound for when the shield breaks in Halo. One of my favorite easter eggs for that whole video.
It's middle school Voiceplay! If you haven't seen Tony in anything else, you need to react to their Phantom of the Opera. Tony does the outro and says that it is a departure for them because it is so theatrical. Rachel Potter joins them in that one. Please!!
XD Heee! I suspect the people who recommended this to you of having done it to help you understand the Mountain King. Just... shenanigans. Chaotic, hilarious shenanigans. *That* is what's going on, both here and there. ;D
Thank you for another great reaction to Voice Play. Did you know Geoff taught Layne how to beat box ? Please do a reaction to a mixture of " Geoff Beatboxing or Geoff The Beatboxer.) I think that's what it's called. It shows Geoff's Beatboxing skills. I believe that was before Layne started Beatboxing. Geoff was awesome !
Just watching your intro makes me real looking forward to the rest of this. Of course, I've loved this for a while. Have you done Phantom of the Opera? Then you've seen Tony. I still like getting this fix occasionally.
You should get a reactor Collab going. You, Peter Barber, Charismatic Voice, Maggie Renee and another tenor... Do up a song, maybe a round robin like peter hollens does and put it out for the Acapella groups to react to. You all show love for, and break apart their stuff, now it's their turn... I think I hay could work out great if you get a great song or a medley..
There is a 'promotional' video, they did, i think in 2012...called Crimpanella......check out thei talent......Mortius, how many times has Voiceplay 'broken' you?......>^^
Such a fun reaction! Your laugh… 😁Question: do you ever have the group in the larger screen and you in the smaller one? Seems like that’s done more often but maybe I’m wrong. Just a bit hard to see a bunch of people so small. But you do you!
