People never mention how Erika didn't marry the prince right away like other princess movies tend to do, instead she went on her own way, saw the world, built a career and decided she wanted to get married only after that smh

Honestly I have VERY LOW standards. (They’re probably too low). If I was betrothed to some guy and he was at least mentally stable and sort of nice, I honestly wouldn’t care about being forced to marry him. IDK weird.
Lol, I do get it, but in my opinion, both girls had bad lives. Erica was a slave with no end in sight, but Annalise not only had to marry a man she didn't know when she already loved someone else, she had to deal with an entire kingdom that was a few bad days away from starving to death. Imagine having thousands of lives in your hands. And they're starving and have nowhere to live and have no money. And if they die, it's your fault.That kind of stress and responsibility is terrible.
Dominic is a true king. He lets Erika go live her life and sing, and waits for her. He agrees to marry to help another kingdom. And he can sing. Erika doesn’t trauma shame, she understand that Annalise is forced to do something she doesn’t want to do. My man Julian a true detective 🕵️♂️. I think the life in the dream house series is just Barbie (and others) doing voiceovers over dolls over “animated” dolls, the princess and the pauper one is them “acting” in “real” life but the dream house series is just Barbie voiceacting if that made sense

The entire Barbie film series is meant to be where "Barbie" is a famous actress who plays certain parts. That's why they're called things such as "Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper" and not just "The Princess and the Pauper." There are also animated bloopers for this reason.

It's not really something small though. Her only options are to be trapped in a loveless marriage or let her kingdom die. What if the king was abusive, and Anneliese had to grin and bear it for her kingdom? Not to mention, if Anneliese hadn't found the crystals, she would have never gotten the life she wanted, while Erika at least had a chance of a good life once her debt was paid off.
Some People misunderstood this. Annalisas and Erikas Situation actually IS the same, because they before feel trapped in a place where is no way out. And they are both forced by their environment to do things they don't want to, they are not living in freedom. And Erika is a lot more optimistic than Annalisa, because Erikas Situation will end at the day she pays back her depts and then she will be a free human being. Annalisa is a lot more pessimistic, because her duty of being forced to serve for her royal kingdom will last forever, she will never escape this type of life unless she dies. And the prince she doesn't know, she's forced to marry FOREVER might be abusive, and then she's stuck with him for the rest of her life because her kingdom relies on that. The message is that both of these regardless of worth or lack there of, do value their own freedom over material things. In the first song called "Free" Annalisa literally sings "You'd think that I'm so lucky that I had so many things, but I'm realizing every present comes with strings", which means she has to give up her freedom in exchange for these presents. And Erika doesn't dream of becoming rich, she just wants to pay off her depts so she can travel the world and have a singing career. Also both sing throughout "Free": "There is more for living, than cloves and gowns". The fact that Erika and Annalisa can relate to each other and don't devalue each other's feelings because of their social status, is a sign of empathy. Madame Carp and Primenger are both polar opposites to Erika and Annalisa, they are both greedy for money and power, Madame Carp enslaves and exploits Erika to fill her own pockets, while Preminger literally steals the gold of the kingdom so the peasants have to starve and he puts up a scheme to become the king of this kingdom. And Annalisa recognizes Erikas bad Situation, she does stand up against Madam Carp when she got misunderstood by her as Erika, and she literally fires Madam Carp and closed her store at the end of the movie

Seamus, I'm here to crush your dreams. The reason why the movie feels like the world was just spawned into existence, is it's kind of a movie, within a movie. It's established that Barbie has her own universe, and that every movie in which her character isn't named Barbie, she is either playing a role, or in the case of movies like Rapunzel, she's telling a story in which she plays the main character. It's not a sentient toy universe, it's the BCU.

The thing is tho..... Erika is the one who first says “I’m just like you.” Annelise is surprised by this (“you are?”), and Erika has to explain to her that “there’s somewhere else we’d rather be.” Erika has compassion for Annelise, and understands what it’s like to feel trapped by circumstances
That's the whole message of the movie in my opinion, and why Erika was the best character! Any normal person in that situation would've immediately looked at their differences and been like "wow you're life is so amazing. I wish I had that" but instead Erika saw something they both had in common and was super positive about it.
Rather than viewing herself as a victim or feeling inferior to the Princess, Erika conveys that her self-worth is equal to royalty. She is not a damsel in distress, she's a strong, confident woman with a plan to free herself and pursue her lifelong dream.
The other thing I’d say is that in the song “Free” it’s made clear that Annelida is about to lose all of her freedom whereas Erika knows she will eventually ‘forever be free’

To answer some barbie lore: Barbie is an actor, and in the movies where she is named barbie, it is happening in the "real" world. So in this movie she is playing the roles of annalise and erika. We find this out in "barbie, a fashion fairytale" when we see her on set for a princess film. As well as in "barbie, a fairy secret" when we see her on the red carpet for a Premier. This also explains the titles of her movies. For example, since barbie is acting in rapunzel, the title is barbie as rapunzel. However in the netflix TV show "barbie, life in the dream house" it is very clear that they are actually toys and use it to there advantage to create scenarios and jokes. So this must mean that this TV series isn't in the BCU (barbie cinematic universe). Thank you for coming to my Ted talk and I hope you make more of these videos. These films were my childhood :)

It may not be a sentient toy universe, but it is a universe in which barbie is an actress and every movie in which her name isn't barbie, she's just acting, and every movie in which her name IS barbie, she is actually portrayed as a famous actress. Which is definitely interesting.
As a guy who grew up with 3 older sisters that absolutely adore this stuff. I actually have the perfect backstory and reason for actually enjoying Barbie movies unironically! Barbie's dialogue was pleasant to hear as I was a big fan of Kelly Sheridan as a kid because she also voices Sango from Inuyasha! I have no shame baby!

I loved the movie as a kid (I still have memorized the song Erica and the King sang together, it is forever engraved in my brain) and understood that they were bonding over the fact that they both felt trapped haha
Honestly I just wanna spend my entire life reviewing the Barbie Movies (plus Life in the Dream House episodes). Along with the Bratz and Monjster High movies because I'm literally a child. Which...I guess I literally am I child since I only just turned 16. Alas, I live vicariously through movie reviewers.
This movie is why I’m in to metal today (the singer for Barbie is the lead singer in Sumo Cyco), but goodness. I was having a nostalgia trip and my partner thought it was a knockoff because of how bad the animation was.
The gap between women of different classes was imo so much smaller than that of men in different classes tho. In some ways gender roles were even STRICTER among the higher classes, so to just kinda dismiss Annalise's struggles just because she's wealthier is not a very nuanced take, especially since this movie is about emphatising and understanding situations that are different from yours and which might seem favourable to you. In the movie, Erika has to be a servant with a boss who abuses her power, probably didn't have much freedom to do stuff during her childhood, and has to work a lot, but once she's worked of her loan she would be free as an adult. Annalise on the other hand, due to her wealth, had a happier childhood with more freedom to do stuff even under strict rules, but now that she's older, not only is she stuck with permanently carrying the weight of her kingdom on her shoulders, but has no choice but to marry some stranger who might as well suck for the sake of her kingdom, as well as having to follow strict, often gender-specific etiquette rules for the rest of her life. Where Erika's freedom would begin, Annalise's ends. On top of that Annalise seems to have an interest in science, but she isn't allowed to do any work with that in favour of her princessly duties which for a large part amounts to sitting still and looking pretty (which can be incredibly frustrating to an intelligent person that actually wants to work) and eventually probably popping out kids, while after Erika is done with her tailoring labor she can strive to follow a career she has dreamed of. And above all that the movie never stated these two situations are just as bad, just that they can relate to eachother and understand eachother.

It's all about a commoner trying to fit in among princesses who treat her differently because she's not a princess. Since you didn't like the animation in this one, I suggest you now watch a newer one and then compare them, and I think Princess Charm School is a great candidate for that. Although now that I think about it, quite a lot of the Barbie movies are about equality. For example in the Island Princess, the protagonist is essentially a female Tarzan, but the prince loves her anyway but his parents really want to set him up with a princess. That's just one example, a lot of the others have similar themes. But if you're willing to review just one more, I reccomend Princess Charm School, it's made later on so you could compare and older one to a newer one. (People, please help make Seamus see my comment.)
This is my favourite Barbie Film when I was little (next to 12 Dancing Princesses which I watched over and over and over and over....) but seeing how you didn't enjoy it, we thank you for your sacrifice. (guys we're at 26K, we're almost there)

The point of putting Erica to play Anneliese wasn't so Preminger would confess, it was to buy time for Julian to investigate what might've happened to Anneliese without canceling the engagement to Dominic, which was an advantageous marriage the country needed to stabilize its economy. It's not that complicated, Seamus. Also stan Barbie and watch the other movies pls :)
I think it’s important that it’s Erika that’s the one that starts saying the whole ‘your just like me’ bit. The poor person, the person with technically worse problems, is the one that sees each other’s similarities.
@Feef the Beef They never said they exactly understood each other, like sure, the lyrics were "you're just like me" but both characters display shock and surprise at the other's life later on, showing that the intention was never to show them as the same bc clearly they are not lol. It shows the universality of human emotion. That is a beautiful thing and the only reason why any change has ever happened in society - bc ppl not going through the same struggle can look at another person's and say 'I can imagine how awful that would be, we are the same, I can understand and this isn't right'.
It's more like empathizing or understanding each other's circumstances. Both girls wanted get away from their responsibilities and be "free" but they can't because it's their duties, which is why Erika said she's just like Anneliese. People usually miss this which is a shame.
For the "Are the humans or toys" question: In a later Barbie movie "A Fashion Fairy Tale" it is explained that Barbie is actually a actress playing most of the movies. So every movie in which her name is actually "Barbie" takes place in the "real world/modern time" and the others are her being an actress starting in those movies (and sometimes the movies also begin with Barbie herself telling the story to some children). So as far as I know she is supposed to be a normal human in this world and not a toy. (I don't know about the newer Barbie movies however). Oh and you have to watch Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse. It's like a reality show about Barbie, which is just absolutely hilarious

I am sad you didn't enjoy the movie. I am 23 right now and rewatched that movie few months ago when I was 22. Still loved it just as much as when I was a child.

You focused mostly on the negatives, and there are a lot of great things about this movie that you completely ignored. I am not hating on the fact that princess and the pauper is the most popular barbie movie by saying this because I know everyone has their own opinions so it's natural to disagree but I honestly think that princess and the pauper is the most popular barbie movie mainly because of the song "I'm just like you" which I agree is a banger but I'm just sad that some songs in other movies aren't given much recognition because they're basically what made up my childhood. A song that really sticks to me is "believe" from the diamond castle another would be the lullaby from the island princess. Like I said this is just my opinion on the movie. Maybe i feel this way because maybe I'm burnt out from seeing the princess and the pauper a lot nowadays but that's just my take on it.

Okay, so a couple of things, Nick and Nac (The guys working for Preminger) got into the castle because Preminger let them in. Then, Julien’s plan is to get Erika to pretend to be Annaliese for long enough to actually find Annaliese. The wedding to Dominic is going to be called off if she doesn’t return by the end of the day. Julien is just trying to buy time to find her and figure out what’s going on. He doesn’t know at that point that she was kidnapped, just that something weird is going on. In my personal opinion, the main message of the movie is to be yourself. Erika pretends to be Annaliese and it gets her in trouble. Dominic is constantly dressing up as other people because he feels uncomfortable being himself because he doesn't want people to act differently around him. The song with the two of them is called "If you love me for me" which kind of gets at that whole situation because Erika isn't being honest about who she is. There's the whole thing with Wolfie feeling self conscious for acting like a dog. Basically, the idea behind it is to encourage people to be themselves no matter what other people might think of them.
This princess and the pauper slander will not be tolerated. Great going with you channeling Erika and Anneliese with your sweatshirt and your wall paint HAHA
I just realized the Percy Jackson books are in the background. Also, watch the 12 dancing princesses, fairy secret, princess charm school, island princess and rapunzel. I personally think they're the best, don't judge.
The fact that I put this movie unironically above many Pixar and Disney movies makes me laugh so much whilst watching this video. This, Barbie as Rapunzel and Swan Lake are some of the best movies ever.
I couldn't even get through rapunzel it was so boring, but the Christmas Carol and Island Princess are pretty good, and the twelve dancing princesses, and swan lake is good too, and the fairytopia and mariposa movies, and honestly most barbie movies are pretty good.
