I accidentally bought a new Honda Rancher. How much can it drag through the snow? #76

After weeks spent back in the real world trying to fix my old atv, I finally threw in the towel and bough a new machine. My 20 year old Honda dragged a lot of trees and held up for the most part so I decided to get another.
Can the new one pull as much through the snow? Was it really worth the money? There is only one way to find out.
Because I’ve gotten so many questions about the gear that I use on the channel, here are some of the most important pieces I use every day:
(I do receive a small commission from sales associated with the following links. Any income from these sales goes directly to supporting me in making new videos for this channel!)

Great stuff, and if you hate spending money, consider insulating the roof, that alone will save you a ton of money in propane.

It's called frost heave, Ryan. Seems to be more obvious in sandy soil. My patio pavers heave so much they individually crack to pieces and poke up a half inch. Makes it harder to shovel snow.

1” even of hard insulation would make that cabin soooo much more energy efficient. Your 40 lbs would go a very long ways!!! Just fit it tightly into the gaps between the studs and roof rafters. Each stud will have an R value of zero, but the cavities will be R6 or so. 2” is R12 of course. There would be a net R value of about 4 or 9 but what a huge difference. You could do the floor from underneath and hold the insulation in place with some 1x2. Your cabin and your skills could mean a very energy efficient build. The best is to have the insulation between the studs and siding for about an inch at least. Then you break the cold transfer from the studs and essentially eliminate condensation. The remainder of the insulation you add between the studs is so much more efficient as a result. Very warm with very little energy!

Yeah i kinda wish he would insulate a small shed. Everyone keeps on about putting in a wood stove and I have to agree that cabin with insulation, wood walls and a wood stove would be more than enough to heat that enough to keep everything warm. Even one of those old cast iron cook stoves in an outdoor lean too would be more than enough to cook on and even have enough to heat enough water for shower/bath every day. There are stock pots that are 120 liters that cost a couple 100 dollars, with a simple square brick stove under it would be enough to keep the pot warm the bulk of the day. Just something a bit smaller and about 2.5 feet tall with a open wood hole at the top and side to allow the wood in and then some rebar for ash grate it would boil enough water to have a good shower. My self I would have built a bunch of things to make it easy to live out there all the time. This really roughing it. The amount of money spent on propane has to be costly. I also think he really only spends about 4 or 5 days a week out there. I would also invest in to a swing blade saw mill. A 6 inch model will set one back about 10 to 15k, Which in his area he might find a used one for 70% of the cost. Swing blade sawmill would allow him to mill up a lot more lumber for every log he cuts which would allow him to build a lot more things. He has to be making a pretty fair amount of money each month. Maybe 1k per month between donations and ad sense ( most likely only a 50 dollars per video if that which is about 4 videos per month average of about 25k views ) . Yet I do not know if he has any merch or any other source of income. patreon is around 500 per month maybe. There is enough money to invest some of it in to getting some stuff.

@@shitloveaduck I know what you mean. There is content to be made here and doing some of these things will not only bring in new viewers its content driven work. Adding a few of these things regardless as to if he uses it or not. There is a good 5 mins of content of him moving say one of those old cook stoves. Then 5 mins of clearing an area, 5 mins of milling logs for a lean too shelter. 5 mins of building a deck, 5 mins installing it and 5 mins of using it in one video. Then there is 1 min of content every week making food on it, standing around it drying gloves, shooting the shit. Each one of these ideas and many more adds to the content library. There are dozens and dozens of these small projects that are super fun and super low cost. It just adds value to his channel. He wants to live out in the woods then he can. He wants to film he can. Should he please everyone's request, no. Yet some of those requests have great ideas.

Just a few ideas to get the creative juices flowing: 1) let us see brush day - I could watch chipping, burning, clearing, trailblazing. 2) You're a musician - how about an amphitheater with a stage and a large canopy for a place to friends to hang out in the rain? Use up those thinner treetop poles. 3) Don't be shy about sprinkling in more philosophy - people like those inner thoughts. 4) Wooden simple machines - planes, levers, axles, etc. things to make moving and placing logs easier. 5) Speaking of machines, how many people in the UP have a trebuchet? 😁 Love the channel and your creativity - keep it up!

You should look for a cheap or broken kayak. Cut off the point just big enough to pass your tow strap through. Make another cut around the cockpit. You can then place the ends of logs inside the kayak and the tow strap through the tip of the kayak. You’ll be able to pull more and heavier logs without them getting stuck or hung up.

Nice new ATV. Looks like you are also a tried and true Honda fanitic. I had the exact same 350 as you previously. 2001 model and had it for 15 years without any issues, just replaced the tires. Currently have the Rubicon 520. All were great for towing as I also spend a lot if time in the woods and cut approximately 7 cords of wood per year. One suggestion on the colour. Consider getting a vinyl wrap for the bike r even use the Plasti-dip paint. Put any colour or design you want on it. Plus, you can remove both the vinyl wrap or the Plasti-dip paint at anytime. If I am not misaken, the camo finish on the Honda ATV’s s just a vinyl wrap anyway. Enjoy your channel.

Building a bigger cabin . . . or a sauna? That's a tough choice. One thing I do while chipping branches with a small chipper is to keep some good lopping(pruning) shears on hand to cut off big forked branches and to shorten limbs that are too long to run through the chipper before the flywheel loses its momentum. I hold the loppers with one handle tucked into my armpit so I can grab and hold the branches with the one hand while I pull the loppers to cut with the other hand. Thanks for the video Ryan!

Great video… like the idea of an open area and it makes cutting trees easy if you are remove them from a set area. If you need ideas about how to spend your RU-vid dollars, have you ever tried a cordwood structure. Since you have a lot of not lumber logs or small trees that aren’t really big enough for cutting lumber you could invest in a couple of bags of mortar and see what you could create. Maybe a post and beam type thing with the walls infilled. Not saw-milling but cutting stuff to a set length for your wall thickness and then play with blocks and mud. Sooner or later it has to warm up enough to try something different. Thanks for sharing and enjoy a warm dry sleeping bag!

Your physics are 100% correct on the reason for the un-leveling of the cabin. The ground freezes and the moisture expands. The path of least resistance is up to the surface and it lifts the rocks in the ground and anything setting on it (the log footings) as well as any moisture still in the logs footings would also expand (very little depending on moisture content) causing that side to lift. The other side on the stumps is set as the stumps have dried out and are positively located in the ground rather than on top of it. (If the stumps have shallow roots they can lift as well but not nearly as much as something on top of the ground.

@@dalerogers3398 Wood burns you just have to dry it out. He has piles and piles of scrap that he just burns off. Lots of the mid range 2 to 4 inch stuff can be bucked up and stacked all year round and should be pretty dry by winter time. Even the rotten logs and off cuts he does will dry out pretty quick. I have already cut down a dozen trees this year and have a lot more to go. Right now I have about 5 to 8 cords stacked and drying out for splitting next fall. I should have 20 to 30 cords cut up by next year. My goal is to have 50 cords or more cut and split and ready every year. I am taking the time this year and cutting up everything I can get my hands on to get a massive stock pile going for the future years as this is a new place.

Hey Ryan, give your new toy a break already and stop face dragging the logs into stumps and other things because it's just wearing parts out faster, using more gas and can be remedied with a simple sled to drag the log with...even an old Volkswagen hood, something, anything even a wheel-less little red wagon will work by placing it under the end of the log, securing the logs end to the sled's head, and THEN dragging it,( the sled ) into camp or the milling area by the sled itself. This will also stop impacting dirt into the ends of the logs that will then dull your chainsaw chains that much quicker. Just a thought...

Maybe build a cabinet in between studs with it hanging outside to put propane tanks in to keep inside to keep warm and out of way . And you could put door on it inside so don’t have to see tank just cut vents in door for heat to get to tank… but I would have got a small wood stove same size as your propane stove , with all that wood. They use in hot tents , I have one in my deer house blind , and keeps it as warm as I want. I would insulate the man she’d so not using a lot of gas and put a heat powered fan on stove . A damper won’t work in pipe because the stove flame is controlled by you not same as wood….maybe some foil behind pipe to reflect heat back out in room ….you can get camouflage skins to put on 4 wheeler , I went to 4 dealers to get what I wanted Kodiak 700 Yamaha from Grizzly . Wanted lower but same power and only little bit lower so I can get on and off with my bad hips and in camouflage.

I know what you mean, I got excited over a table and chair once. After not having either for a while ya kinda learn to appreciate those things in a more thorough manner.

Wire closet shelving would do well around the stove flue pipe.

Couldn’t you just add on to the cabin you built? Perhaps the old 4x could be used as a power source for a chair/ski lift or something? Anyway, great stuff. I look forward to see what you do.

Paint the underside of fenders a lighter color, like sand or tan. Makes it easier to see all the pieces & parts. Then paint the rest camouflage. There is also a clear bed liner, to make it scratch resistant. Maybe bring the wood chipper to the areas (trails) you want to cover. Instead of gravel. Spending money on tools isn't terrible. The 4-wheeler makes sense. My last pickup, I bought a bank repo for $625, put another $800 into it, & it's been running great for 5+ years. Frugal is the way to be.

Don't forget to clean the gas filter every year, It's easy to forget since we don't see them. I don't know about the 2022 model, but my rancher 420 2013 has a very small filter , smaller than a tea pouch. Once the filter starts to cause restriction , it's just a matter of time before the feul pump goes bad and you have to change the whole feul pump...$$$$. You made a good choice by not having an electric shift model, especially if you keep it a long time. Have fun !!!

If you board up the inside of that mini cabin and swap out that type of propane stove you will be surprised how well it would heat. My mini 2 story cabin gets above 70 dnstairs and upstairs is a sauna

I’d get the smallest wood stove I could find (or build) and put that in the cabin so quick! I do like to be warm!
