Somewhere my Mom has a collection still (I think) of old flour sacks either purchased on our trip to South Dakota and Wyoming and/or from family / local thrift shop, that actually had very clearly intended patterns printed on the sacks, along witha few patterns somewhere. During the Great Depression, as likely you already know, the sacks for flour and other staple foods were often turned into garments by thrifty customers as a way to pinch just a few extra pennies. The companies that sold these goods would often printed with attractive designs in an effort to attract customers that might engage in this practice. This feels a lot like that; not that you absolutely have to repurpose this bag as a function of economic suffering, but with so much difficulty in the world at the moment, with money and otherwise, it feels fitting somehow that old solutions should find a home with new problems. What is history for, if not to teach us how to cope with tomorrow's world?

Most of my mom’s school clothes were made from feed sacks when she was a little girl. My grandpa only ever bought the pretty color patterns of feed sacks when my grandma wanted sewing fabric. Yes the paper dress was a fad from 1966. Made from a disposable cellulose material called dura-weave that was invented and patented in 1958. The fabric was a little fire and water resistant. Though yours is more lovely than groovy. Instead of the Andy Warhol soup can.This is the Amazon gift bag. By the way the soup can dress is available for sale today for $3,600.00. So treat that dress well in 50 or so years it could be worth a bag of money. 👗💖😜👍♻

Dear Morgan, I’m sure you aren’t expecting the direction I am going to take this, but here goes... I was recently surprised to learn that the medieval inspired gown worn by HRH Princess Anne for her first wedding was cut in one single piece. Although I can theoretically picture how that would work, having seen it in slimmer silhouettes, I had difficulty picturing how this was possible on such a grand silhouette as a royal wedding gown without wasting tons of fabric. Your demonstration here brought the solution into focus. The box pleating illustrated how a relatively small amount of extra fullness available from the waist can translate into a much fuller hem than I had realized. Thank you for sharing your process. It’s always such a joy to watch.

What an inspired idea and amazing result!! THAT DRESS!! It reminds me of my mother's story of a piece of wool tartan she was gifted which she made into a dress. She got tired of the dress and created a skirt and blouse out of the dress. She apparently wore the skirt more often, so she took the blouse and created a vest. Then she took the skirt and created a different top, which we still have somewhere. She was always doing things like that. She, again, was given an old Persian fur jacket, which she took apart and created a hat and huge cuffs for a swing winter coat (1950's)! My sister and I were the recipients of her sewing creativity as well! While your dress was made from "throwaway" materials, you were able to create something wearable and fun from it! I would NOT have looked at that giant gift bag and thought "Oh! A dress!!" Bravo!

I remember when I avoided seam ripping at all costs. Then I took several semesters of fashion classes just for fun, and it quickly got to where seam ripping was just part of the process, and it turned out not to be traumatic after all;) Seam ripping is pretty easy. I had a couple of classes (draping I and pattern making I) where we were given the rule that pleats should radiate from the center to the side seams and woe unto you if you didn't follow all the rules. There were also MANY rules about darts. Then the next semester they just said to use your artistic choice;)

Being creative, l made various bags, to hold mini Xmas presents, next some for my crystals and tarot cards. Making a large bag, to cover my violin, inside it’s hard carrying box. Works a treat as it stays in tune. Finally made a slim sleeve, for two bows. Best wishes for your future dress making. ☺️🌈

@camerashycoco
@camerashycoco 3 года назад
So I used to pet sit. One of my clients was Master Sydney, a pot belly pig. Sydney was fabulous in lots of ways that I'm not going to go into here but the most interesting one to me is that the sort of behind a pig's ear, right about where the ear meets the head, is smooth and soft and supple, like the very finest silk charmeuse. It seriously makes the same spot on my own person course by comparison. Anyway, every time I hear the silk purse of a sow's ear idiom, that's all I can think of. It really makes me wonder if that didn't have something to do with the idiom in the first place. Also, I totally agree, she really can, and it is amazing.

@@sadiejosiemom Sydney was amazing. One of probably my top three favorite jobs. And I had a lot of jobs. And I took care of lots of different animals. Sydney was just amazing. Apparently, both by my experience and according to all the experts, pigs are super smart. And really, aside from some drooling, quite clean. He pooped in one part of the yard, he ate grass pellets (and whatever treats, they're omnivores) so he always smelled like fresh cut grass, he had a piggy door, with its own doorbell that he would use his snout on if you had shut his door for some reason (primarily to keep out his housemate, Madame Lucy [not a pig, fabulous mutt puppy], but also when you needed to vacuum or mop the floors), and when it was time for bed, always determined by Master Sydney himself, he would hop up onto his sofa, yes, he had his own sofa, and burrito himself into his blankets until morning. Sydney was absolutely amazing. His parents, his human parents, were a EMT and a policeman, both retired. I think she had done water rescue and so there were frogs everywhere. I mean like frog knick knacks and pictures and that sort of thing. And pigs, just all over the place. These people, very nice people, I like them a lot, Not Minimalists. They used to put Sydney into costumes for Halloween and Christmas and whatever other holidays they found particular costumes for. And, as he was very sociable, they took him all over the place. Yeah, Sydney was cool. And he had the softest ears on the planet.
