Have you ever attempted making a 12volt vs this 9volt version? I know when I use it on battery power vs plugged in (12v), the volumet level maxes out much high when plugged into a 12v source. The 9v volume is plenty good for most cases though so maybe it not worth it.

No. Because this Apple speaker doesn’t take 12v. I did a mod for a 12V TV. Stay tuned I will post a video soon

With the 9V charger, it will not charge the iPod when in the dock. Would switching to a 12V allow for the iPod to charge? Was your goal just to get music on the go, or to get full functionality from a battery bank?

It charges the iPod too. The iPod HiFi Speaker will not know that the D batteries are not used. It is a constant 9V power supply, not 12V. My finished design is shown in this short video ru-vid.comskj9hsLOnu8?feature=share My goal is to avoid using D batterie or use a 90 degree USB-C cable from wall charger to make it sit closer to the wall as the original AC cable sticks out too much. I have one where the internal power supply has failed and I'm loathed to open the box. Could I use this to hook it up to a usb wall plug?

It may burn it. There is no way to know but to try it out :) I won't risk it.

Which iPod are you using? Do you know which one would be compatible with the iPod Hi-Fi, meaning that they will charge and send music via the 30 pin connector?

iPod nano and Classic. All 30-pin iPods are compatible.
