I've bough a 20pin to Bluetooth adapter for £15 it's called LAYEN best in class bluetooth, works like charm, had it 6 years now in my gym, never fails, spare me from opening the unit.
Hi there looking at doing this from the dock connection , Do you have a pin out/schematic for the power supply output for the docking port by any chance ? Cheers
good job. now if you want to connect a device via the 3.5mm input will it work well since there's also the BT module in parallel? also does the BT module add any background noise? I'm impressed by the built of this speaker, the did put some thought into it
+Alexandru Simonescu they sure did :) I love it, as long as it's set to the bass boost mode. There's no hiss introduced by the BT Module, and using the jack works as normal (even though I'm sure CSR don't recommend it)
Thanks for the video. Seeing as it's been 3 years, is there a newer Bluetooth module that you would recommend? I'm looking at converting my Apple Hifi soon. Thanks!
Great video! Since it looks like you know a lot about this great sounding device, maybe you know the answer to my problem. My aux input stopped working. If I put a phone or iPod in the dock everything is working fine but I used to have my TV hooked up to the aux input for great sound, but it's not working anymore. Any idea? Is the line in hooked up to the board to a different circuit then the 30 pin dock? I didn't see any fuses or so in your video, just wondering what can suddenly stop working.
+c anthony Cinturati never heard of them; I used Airplay back in the day with an airport express and that worked very poorly - so, not too keen on that given how well bluetooth 4.0 with aptx works. Have you used this usr s12 board ??
Great to see you repurpose these beautiful speakers, I'd like to mount one in my car so I'm guessing you could bypass the power supply and get the 12v feed directly somehow?
Mmm, it does you a bit more than 12V internally, and, although you can easily feed in whatever you want through the battery posts (higher voltage will yield lower currents), the "battery mode" yields literally 40% less power unfortunately Worse than that, I did try one at full power in a regular sized (for europe xD) sedan, and it really wasn't that loud ... The 50W the car had alongside with the more strategic speaker placement yielded significantly more power
You could buy touch sensors off of aliexpress or ebay .. 10 for 2$ or so, and with those you could still have that Wasn't aware of these at the time, and, yeah .. I lost that functionality
Great mod! A bit off-topic - do you think the speaker will work with a mono plug inserted, so that the right channel is grounded? Will it use all speakers or only the left one? Cheers, Felix
Great vid! Thumb up to your effort but I wouldn’t be able to do such thing like you did! Just wondering if I buy a Bluetooth receiver on internet to plug in, would it be working and what type of Bluetooth should be purchased? There are plenty from 2.2 to 5.0 version! Would appreciate your help! Thanks :)
Not a electronics guy myself. But was impressed by your video (also checked some of your other videos). Great job! Many thanks for posting. I'm now convinced to go ahead with reviving my Apple Hifi. My idea is to 1. Convert the dock to lightning (with two consumer adapters placed inside the unit - 30pin firewire to 30pin usb + 30pin usb to lightning), and 2. To upgrade it with bluetooth as per your video. However, I was considering using a Bluetooth 5.0 module (CSR8670 ?). Any advantage in relation to the Bluetooth 4.0 (CSR8645) in terms of sound quality? Any disadvantages/obstacles in doing so? Would the CSR8670 have any different requirements in relation to your video? Cheers Darieee.
Thanks for the kind words !! 100% avoid the 8670 and 8675 ... it's very hard to program them atm .. and you might even get modules with a Bluetooth 4.2 firmware I would now recommend getting a 12/5V CSRA64215 module They're absolutely awesome, and I have resources to program them - thusly - you have the videos explaining it xD So with a 64215 you will be able to set an equalizer, custom name, and other stuff ... and it sounds amazing
Great. Thanks for the ultra-fast reply! Quick question: will the remote control (volume, pause, play, skip) still work on the bluetooth connected devices?
Would it not have made more sense to inject the sound into the wires where the iPod sits? Also, opening the PSU seems overkill? Wouldn’t make sense to intercept the power as it leaves the PSU?
The CSR8645 supports aptX which is an improved protocol for audio while older Bluetooth has a limited audio resolution. The new aptX HD is even better but there is not much hardware support yet.
well, if you equalise the csr8645 then most likely you'll get some popping and cracking when you fo forward in a song ... so, HA ! aac is implemented a bit better in these chips >:) (csra64215 works fine though)
Indeed the CSRA64215 would perform better since it is a higher spec chip and visibly larger. I haven't seen one with a 12v regular yet so there will be some DIY needed.
Yeah, that would be the holy grail ... though I doubt it will ever come to market, since the 8645 is very much enough for most of the market I would assume .. but, let's see maybe HYT have it in the pipeline Also, the package size is what it is mainly to be a drop in replacement for the 8635 and 8630 ... Both of which are way weaker than the 8645 and yet have that same large package
Hi! Is there any chance of changing D cell to something stronger, like Lithium? normal D Cell doesn´t provide enough power to speaker. It´s very different (sound volume - power) when plugged on power cable against D Cell.
Good work. One simple solution is to buy a $10 bluetooth 4.0 to 30pin adapter and you're good to go but it misses the point of your mod. Thank you for the video.
Is there a required type of power cord? Can you suggest any? And a follow up question, does it need batteries to be able to work while the power cord is plugged in?
QUESTION: So I run my tv (to which I run a fire stick and applettv) to my hifi via toslink. And to be able to cast directly I’ve used a Bluetooth plugged directly Imto the hifi via the same Jack. Am I losing serious quality?
Darieee cheers then man lol! Here’s the deal- have a small kitchen I’m in a lot. Want to hear 2uslity music but space at minimum. Had barley used hifi so connected it to tv with toslink. The rear aux Jack isn’t just ta standard 3.5 mm, it will accept toslink optical. so once connected to my tv which has fire stick running to it and Apple TV as well, all that digital quality pushed optically to hifi. Am I maximizimg sound potential?
Darieee Thanks man, but real quick: I don’t use a Bluetooth. I did originally buy a Bluetooth device to plug directly into the rear aux as that seemed the quickest, most conviviemt was means st wat o as to enable guests to cast fdrnenslwkq ejomew7yhhym. Opo, .jkhdfa
fg… Darieee so I ldespise this damn RU-vid comment posting, it’s as if they set out to make it as counterintuitive as possiblej. Anyway, I didn’t mean to indicate that I’m using Bluetooth now, I’m not. I had originally purchased a Bluetooth adapter to plug into the rear audio Jack as I believe this to be the most direct and best way to flame run music from my phone or tablet. But then a buddy of mine was looking through the Ifly manual and said that it looked as though Apple had loaded the rear jack with a dual ability to take TossLINK optical. So you I thought we’re in my kitchen where amazon fire and Apple TV stream to my kitchen tv, the tv has tossLINK out, so run that to hifi. So that’s what I do now instead of Bluetooth and my question is am I using a proc3ss that is at least tied for best sound optimization of the hifi?
Yeah I suppose so, and it's probably way more reliable at the time of making the video I though sensing regular jacks would/should be done with those multiple GND connections, and the light from the optical would switch the amp on when that was the case Thinking about it now, even with an optical cable plugged in, the amp is always on
WoW impressive ! I have a sound bar Yamaha YSP 2700 and I am thinking of if it is possible to upgrade the Bluetooth module to Bluetooth 5.0. Do you have any clue ?
5.0 modules are hard to program -- the modules are already out there though At the moment I'd recommend getting a CSRA64215 5v module and powering it from a non-permanent 5v rail, that way, whenever your sound bar turns on the module will connect to your phone Programming it is also very easy, so you can give it a name or a custom eq -- it's not necessary though
Hi there. great video. not many iPd Hi-Fi repair videos in RU-vid. Cheers from Indonesia. I just got myself an iPod Hi-fi in good condition except the iPod docking does not charge, it plays well with no issue beside not charging. I have some restored Classic iPods (I restored them myself) that I want to plug into. Unfortunately I don't have the tools (and courage) to repair the Hi-FI myself, still looking for someone near my home who can do it (I can't do soldering and stuff). I would definitely might as well modding with a BT receiver like you did.
I pod classics will not charge on this iPod Dock only older iPods sadly it's more a FireWire iPod 30 pin dock from what I have read on forums. If you're using older 30 pin 1gen 2nd Gen iPods 3rd 4th 5th Gen 5.5 gen ect that used FireWire then will green light and charge Sadly the classic changed it's pin outs for newer docks and digital out from its 30 pin so this is why they will not work with charging it on classics 6/6.57th gen classics Hope that helps explain for you
Also you can buy a 30 pin BT 5.0 modula now for BT so no need to disassemble either. Unless like me one of speakers is not working properly so I will need to go in so I might buy a spares repairs one to test on first to use it's parts.
I bought a used iPod HiFi with a missing dock (someone had tried to fix it, the cable to the dock is still there). It works through the AUX input, but I had to pair a remote with the unit to switch to AUX. If I had the pinout of the dock cable that goes to the amp, it might be possible to connect the audio input that way.
Darieee it does not stay on aux. power up defaults to the dock. I paired a remote with it and could switch to aux. as long as power is plugged in, it will stay on aux. if I disconnect from power and plug back in, setting goes back to the dock
@@jonathanmanhart8920 I don't know. I still need the pinout of the cable that connects the dock to the iPod HiFi. In the meantime, I am using the AUX port with a Bluetooth adapter. I also discovered that one of the channels was not functioning, which will require me to tear it down again. It is under my bed for music in the bedroom so the dead channel does not matter. I'll take another look if I can find the pinout for the internal dock connector. Or, if I decide to try and fix the other channel, I will see if I can determine the pinout where the cable plugs in the iPod HiFi.
Yeah - the default bass setting is "Normal" Connect an iPod Video or later to the dock, and you'll get a new line on the main screen for Sound Settings or something like that Without the bass set to Bass Boost, these speakers are useless
hey Bruno - that's what's called a 'differential' signal both lines are disconnected from GND - it helps with eliminating bluetooth interference since all the noise cancels out you'd need to find a module with a single-ended output if you want a single ended connection; something like this (I suggest you move up to the QCC3008, it's way way better - I also have some tutorials on that) here's a link from a very trustworthy seller - get the 5v variant bit.ly/3tuFuuc
sure didn't, and they also have a very ahead of its time chip doing the only 3 equalizer presets and the ensuring the voice coils don't bottom out / sound like shit
These amps are a couple of pounds on Ali-Express... I understand you wanted to keep as original as possible but just loading in an amp with built in bluetooth may have just been easier...
hmmm, you'll have to measure how much the on-board supply runs at (or there's a few obscure forum posts I can never get to that go very deep into the innards of these) I'd even say 3S is too little ... I would recommend 4 or even 5S (please let me know what you find - I'm also quite interested)
aaaa ... mmm, yeah ... now ... I wouldn't take responsibility if something were to go wrong, but ... I dooo think you can shove quite a bit more in there I did play with this, and I do remember that to have been the case, however I have zero recollection of the actual values ... 3S should be very fine though, maybe go 3S2P or something ...
One 18650 = 3 D batteries. I've done it. very easy to do, each compartment take one 18650, that's it. it can be retro-fitted. Just put a placeholder for each one.
Fast Unboxer one 18650 is 4.2v fully charged. 3 alkaline batteries are 4.8v. I’ve been running my hi-fi on 2s lipo for years now but it won’t go full volume, and after an hour or so, the volume is really attenuated. That’s why I want to run it on 3s instead of 2s
@@Darieee I can tell but i'm listening on decent audio equipment. Sony ES Receiver and Cerwin Vegas in my home, JDS Labs headphone amp and Sennheiser HD 650 headphones, JL Audio 5 channel amp and Focal K2 with JLW3-12 sub in my car and I even have a TDK boombox that has ipod usb support that you can clearly hear the difference between 3.5 and USB digital. I really don't know how far bluetooth has come but last I checked getting a true digital connection beat it.
Darieee That’s what I have been using on my iPhone 7 and my iPod nano 7th generation to compare. USB wins every time. Perhaps you should get a USB digital connection so you can hear for yourself.
great vdo! i had used BT dock connect dongle for about a year then one day no more power to the dongle... everything else works fine. i wish i have skills to do the mod like you ^^
Can you do a video using the Arylic www.arylic.com/products/up2stream-wifi-audio-receiver-module-dlna-airplay-analog-output with a Apple iPod hifi speaker?
It's interesting but as usual Apple mounts these devices backwards so you have to go through the speakers to get to the electronic equipment as for the computers they offer... then wouldn't it be more wise to put a small Bluetooth adapter on the external jack of this speaker rather than taking everything apart and risking breaking something lol🤔
Darieee no, there are loads of 4.0 and 4.1 Bluetooth 30 pin adapters out there. And that has the advantage that you aren’t messing with the line in port.
This is 12v 30 pin dock. It needs a converter in addition to the bluetooth module, unless it specifically says it's compatible with 12v. Most are only 5v 30 pin
No, .. no it actually won't Airport kinda sucks, has a lot of lag (accounted for, indeed) ... only works with apple shit (which is all I have but still) Aaand yeah, throughout the 5 years I've used it it broke under multiple ios versions ... BT4.0+ via AAC (what iOS likes to stream) sounds perfect
I am not trying to bash this video or anything but why bother to upgrade with a low quality bluetooth audio receiver - in the back you have an audio jack in-line that also is an optical audio in line .... You get a 20-30 bucks apple mini router that has analog/optical out.. and you get a wifi audio streaming device to wich you can stream with wifi/ optical quality -- also no soldering dissasembling required....
yeah, thought the same back in the day airplay sucked for the best part of 10 years, I used it almost since it rolled out - you did indeed get great quality, but, there was tremendous lag with apps that somehow did not sync like apple's own music player bluetooth isn't real time either but it's a hell of a lot faster .. and CSR chips are .. well, were at least the best in the business, all the big boys used them, bose jbl etc the airport express + optical wire was what I replaced with that module
@@Darieee you dont need to use Airplay , you can use any streaming device- Amazon Echo dot for example or any cheap ebay wifi adapter - or a 30 pin bluetooth 4.1 adapter that is powered through the connector
@@Darieee A 30 Pin Bluetooth dongle is no clutter. And 1 extra power cable for the Amazon dot or Apple router vs taking the speaker apart and solder a Chinese adapter that can die on you and have to open the speaker again... worth it ?
I would still go for the opening the thing up 😂 the chinese adapter *does* use a world-class bluetooth chip though, all the big boys use CSR chips (now qualcomm) on their toys
Some specs were given in the keynote, such as 80mm drivers in sealed enclosures and a 130mm dual voice coil woofer in a ported enclosure. I haven't heard one in person since 2009-2010ish but I remember the frequency response not being too wide. something like 60Hz-15KHz
