To be fair, counting the children when they are in the car (all children who entered it are still there, obviously) instead of before they entered the car seems a little suboptimal.
I feel Apu and his family wasn't quite this stereotyped in the 90s. Most it had was visiting the quickimart guru on top of a mountain to get his store back, but that's more a generic trope than an indian one. Can kinda see why they removed him tbh.
